Infirmary 9 - 10:30 | Hutcho Q Project’s Champion Sound, Lemon D’s Pursuit Of A Vision EP, D.O.P.E. – Dope On Plastic Part 2, Remarc – Ricky EP… 1993-1994 was the formative years of true Breakbeat/Jungle, the dawn of a new era in twisted darkside when the scene truly split into the lighter sounds of Trance/Techno, House, Garage, Hardcore & those of the grindy, amen-driven UK Jungle Breakbeat tearin out of the speaker stacks.
Gravity 10:30 - 12 | Greg Packer Who better to ask than the man himself, Greg Packer: “Shortly after the Infirmary era, Raggabone (ex Source Promotions) who delivered some of the first rave/club nights Perth had ever witnessed, took over the back room of DC's and the GRAVITY era was born, bringing the best of what Perth had to offer back then with DJ's such as Echoic, Bjam, Qball, Rosko, Jay, Finesse, and myself were all pushing the sounds of Jungle / Drum & Bass. It was also the first venue to host internationals such as DJ SS, Kenny Ken, Groovrider and Dr S Gachet.” This was the era of Urban Shakedown – Arsonist, Demolition Man – Fire, SS – Lighter and who can forget Fugees - Ready Or Not bootleg. When asked if he will be playing the anthems of the era, Packer replied “No fillers that night matey, I’m going straight for the throat.”
Players 12 - 1 | Diamond D 98 – 99 saw the birth of the mighty Loaded Dice series, Players immersed the Sheraton Hotel into the dubby depths of Drum & Bass seeing Perth greats such as Echoic, Sardi, BJam, Diamond D, Krank and Greg Packer . Diamond D will be showcasing the sounds that defined the era, dusting off the plates to pay homage to the era that gave birth to one of Perth’s premier D&B camps.
MFI 1 - 2 | Muller With the first 'official' MFI party held at Scitech Discovery Centre in City West in 1999, it wasn’t a bad way to announce your arrival on the scene. With a total bogan at the helm of the operation, Dan Lucas, these parties were always gonna be a little different, tearing up the rule book and getting rid of tired old rave cliché’s. MFI single handedly managed to breathe new life into an almost deceased party scene, and did a pretty good job of it too. With a regular rotation of core DJs including Muller, Elhornet, Greg Packer, and Frantik, MFI pushed drum n bass to a whole new generation of punters, many of whom are still likely to name check an MFI event as their first exposure to drum & bass. Calling it a day almost 4 years after the first party, love him or hate him, you cannot deny the impact Dan Lucas had on the scene.
As far as the sound of MFi, it would be quite hard to sum up with a few tracks, but tunes that were running back then were Brand New Funk - Adam F, Spaced Invader - Hatiras (Jmajik Rmx), Altitude - Stakka, Skynet and Friction, Something Out There - Ray Keith, Up All Night - John B.
Drum Club 2 - 3 | Frantik, Rufkut, J Rippa, Assassin What started out as a small weekly event at Xanadu (Heat) nightclub, and moving to the historical Gravity venue was to become a landmark in Perth D&B history. This was the legend that was Drum Club, touring almost every International act there was to Australia and setting a new benchmark in creativity with concept night like Homegrown, Hip Hop vs. D&B, Reprazent and VIP. It was more than a club, it was a family, a following, THE place to be every Friday night. Drum Club boosted it’s artists to become Perth’s premier DJs and MCs with a roster including Frantik, Rufkut, Viper, El Hornet, J Rippa, Assassin, Muller, Gusto and Merlin. Expect all the anthems of the era as Frantik and Ruffy do what they do best, alongside the killer combo J Rippa and Assassin.
The Nine 3 - 4 | Shock One, Bad Robot The new millennium has seen the emergence of a new generation of artists. Groups such as Pendulum, Shock One and Bad Robot have stormed the international market as Drum & Bass enjoys it’s ever growing popularity. 2006 brings this new generation to you in the form of The Nine featuring some of Perth’s finest new talents.
