This was a very unique and well organised event, that was really enjoyed by all - with features like the artificial beach that was a haven from the heat, plus volley ball and soccer games and many other amusements like the very popular moonwalker which all added to the brilliant atmosphere.

Bit of a nightmare running between arena's, but highlights of the day were Aphrodite, Richie Hawtin, Laurent Garnier, Josh Wink, Andy Van + more which we missed. There was a strong police presence due to all the media attention, and a channel 7 camera crew taped some of the techno tent. The dancing began late in the day and the huge ampitheatre really got rocking when darkness feel, and it really was a unique moment, when everyone came together for the last dance of the night.

Looking forward to the next one!

Tickets: $20 on the door.
Venue: The Drum Club.

There was alot of talk as of recently about hardcore being dead, but this event sure proved to all that its defiantly still alive and kicking hard.

Was a great turnout at the original home of hardcore with a very up-for-it crowd, responding to Mc Kev's 'what are you here for' question with a thunderous 'ardcore'. Highlight sets were by Menis who raised the roof and DJ Slipmatt who did not disappoint, also very tight sets also by the young guns Marvel and Rousa. Respect to Easy Tiger, if this is a sign of whats to come, then we are instore for a Gravity return.
Pines 2000
Saturday 25th November 2000

This party has grown over the years into one of Perth's favourite annual outdoors events. It has come a long way since humble beginings and taken on a life of it's own to become what it is today.

Venue: Maps to the secret new venue handed out between 8pm - 8:30pm on cnr King and Hay St on the night.

The Pines 2000 event was cancelled. The police and CALM were at the turn off directing people back. It was a shame because it was looking like a good turnout and we all were looking forward to it.

Last years bad media attention was the probably contributed. Perhaps next year it will be a legal event and we can once again enjoy the pines.

What a night.. 12,000 people packed into the maze of a venue, with the biggest cue (2) I have ever seen.. The night was total mayhem, with people trying to catch a glimspe of everything over the 4 levels. When we arrived Chilli Hi-fly were working in the main room nicely, whilst a level up the atmosphere was electric with Troy in the Tek room working up a sweat, Troy's set was my personal favourite of the night, with relentless tech beats and slick mixing to match. The match awaited live set of Chicane made most drop down to the ground level, but after playing a chilled selection most returning back to something a bit harder. Tanaka with his mixing and minimal selection was a bit of disappointment, but the local's & Powell more then made up for it. The closing hours of the night, there was still atleast 70% of the people going strong. Fergie worked the main room into a frenzy, with each track increasing the BPM, were he was actually playing hardcore tracks, interesting hearing hardcore in the main arena for a MoS party, but everyone more then loved it.

Once again a top night and one of the best vibes. Its wicked knowing that Perth can get 12,000 people events now.. Its only going to get bigger.. Bigup Delirium.

This was always going to be huge from the start, with 10 internationals it was a sellout. When we got in we had a walk about, around all the rooms, alot of effort was put in, especially with the chillout room which had special flooring put in, and lots of bean bags and soft cubes.

All the Dj's I saw had good set's, the highlight set's were Judge Jules, Sean Quin, Derrick Carter, Umek and Valentino.

Digital 2000 had a wicked atmosphere, everyone there was there to party hard, all the rooms were comfortably full and a huge number of people were there until 8am.

Respect to Delirium for a wicked event, with so much variety and international Dj's.

Woohoo, Scott Brown returns for another healthy dose of hardcore mayhem!! I arrived shortly after attending the gabber/hardcore night "Railroaded" (which was pretty cool), and DJ Dair was on decks playing some good old classic happyhard tunes to warm things up, as the crowd started to build up both inside and out. Dirty Den and Dazz K lowererd the tempo a bit but still kept things stomping along with their own brand of uplifting house and trance, making way for Greg Packer who played a crazy set as usual, with Interjecta making his mark on the mic. Then, once again sending the people of Perth into a hardcore frenzy, Scott Brown started to pound his unique trancecore sound into the room. There were a few bits which i thought could have been better (He actually dropped a hardcore version of "Blue" by Eifell 65), and the sound-system was SHOCKINGLY loud and distorted when you stood anywhere nearby them...

but everything went right when he suddenly stopped the music and DJ Kev announced that he would be playing (for the first time ANYWHERE in the WORLD) the 2000 remix of NOW IS THE TIME!!! Everyone went absolutaly bananas, and things only got better from there, as he started dropping some absolutly WICKED gabber tunes, it just kept getting harder and harder untill it was full 100% Rotterdam gabber just POUNDING away, I was in heaven I can tell you. I was even allowed to get up on the mic to say a few words, but it was his last song apparantly so I had to jump off stage pretty quick so that he could finish up the set (oh well!) The rest of the night is kinda mushed up because my ears were HURTING from being so close to the speakers all night so far, so I only popped in and out occasionally to see how things were going. The last DJ (Puff? MRW?) played some WICKED tunes to finish things off, even dropping some old hardcore stompers at the end to send everyone crazy one more time. I loved this event purly because it gave me a chance to stomp to GABBER for once, there's nothing quite like it hehehe. Respect to Easy Tiger krew for this one, keep them coming!

venue: entertainment centre (wellington st).

As most people probably found out a little too late, this event was moved to the Globe at the last minute instead of being at the Entertainment Centre, but it was still a good night amongst the venue confusion.

It was a bit of a chilly night, but that was contrasted by the enormous heatwave that bashed you in the face when you walked upstairs to the all-ages Drum and Bass room, it was like a sauna in there!! Because it was so amazingly hot, I never really hung around long enough to hear more than 10 minutes of anyone's sets, so I can't really comment that much on each DJ, but the crowd really seemed to enjoy it (even if it did take them a while to get into it). The Usual Suspects played a thundering set which I really enjoyed, but they seemed a bit pissed off with the decks skipping constantly... I popped into the 18+ Techno room for about 10 minutes at one stage and everyone was going bananas to MRW at that point, very nice setup in there!! There were LOTS of new people at this rave, but everyone was having a good time (except for the heat), which was good to see from this often jaded scene. A great night, respect to MFI for finding a new venue at such short notice!

Whoa what a splendid night of psy/goa trance. This event was well worth going to and it was a well supported one. Getting there I mainly saw clubbers instead of the usual trance crew. then as time progressed so did the amount of ravers. I didn't really get into any of the early sets which i think were done by the reload crew. 2am approached and it was time for cosmosis. they are renouned for their live act but i think they only were mixing and to my surprise i only saw one dj. where was the other? but never mind because instead of his shecduled 2 hour set he added half an hour extra which was welcomed by the masses. he played most songs from his own label and they went down really well.

his style was so twisted, so dark it was a delight to hear the music being pounded out. the set was fast and furious leaving little time for the people to rest. a really good set from him. next up was jayd who picked up where cosmosis left off. i thought this was nearly as good as cosmosis set because i have never heard a dj scratch while pounding out goa/psy trance. his scratching was cream and it mixed in with the songs like salt and pepper(dont ask me where i got that from!!) Choice was up on next but i didn't catch all his set because was well worn out but from wat i heard before i left he kept the frantic pace going. Overall this was an excellent night and too bad it was 18+ cause the underages couldn't get to go =P

Yeah not a bad turnout for this one, with lots of fresh faces around to witness the mind-bending acid-trance and the upfront Drum and Bass tunes. This was held in the TOP floor, which I'd never been to before, and it was a bloody nice arena! I was kind of coming and going throughout the night, but the DJ's seemed to be alternating sets between the Trance and the DnB, with WICKED tunes being played all night. Hutcho started to pick up the pace a bit at the end of another one of his awesome Trancecore sets with some brain-smashing GABBER, dropping the classis "Your Mutha" by DOA as his last tune, everyone went bananas! We even got a bit of the microphone action from Gareth, twas cool! Last up was Dr Claw with some good old stomping hardcore beats. This party reminded me of the events held in the warehouse attatched to the side (which has since been demolished), in the respect that there were lots of kids everywhere, everyone seemed to be having a great time. Hopefully there's gonna be more partys in this part, it rocked.

Excellently supported nite, with mrw and puff getting the crowd moving, the real action began 1 onwards. The Wet boys took over at around 2:30 and started it off hard and they kept it there, with players looking sweaty and packed. These two were interesting to watch, constant EQ attention and 3 deck mixing, akin to 'space dj'z'. Wicked atmosphere all night, as is synonomous with Trancemit parties. What a night this was. It has been quite a while since there has been a huge hardcore rave but it came back with a bang in the form of Random Logic. I have been waiting for this rave for quite some time and Im sure most have too.
Having never been to the PICA venue and hearing peoples view about it I was quite nervous to say the least. Up on entering the venue there was quite a crowd at the front and I thought to myself that it was a good sign that the event will fill to capacity.
Went through the front and you had to go down some corridors and stairs to enter the main room. My first impression of it was that it seemed pretty small but going more down i could see it was a fairly decent sized venue. It was nice and as the name describes it DARK.
First up on the decks I saw was Leroy vs Menis playing a nice seletion of bangin' hardcore which really got the crowd going. I was quite annoyed at missing out on Neurotic's newstyle gabber set but heard it was a really good set.
The crowd was quickly settling in as MC Interjecta's own words introduced "perths premier Dj Greg Packer" came to the decks. He played a nice solid 3 decks set of dark drum n bass and the masses were loving every moment of it.
Then as 1 o'clock approached the place was rammed solid from front to end. The moment all the punters been waiting for had came. Kev introduced the one and only SCOTT BROWN from Scottland. He played a fuckin' nice banging set of happy hardcore dropping new tunes from his recently released cd.

Dropping vocal hardcore like "everytime i close my eyes" to the more trancecore/freeform stuff like "Yeah Oh Yeah, From the underground, Pilgrim and Pilgrim 2000" to the more bouncy hardcore like "I don't need no body" made famous by Prodigy.
He even dropped some of his own classics like "Now is the time" and "Power of Love 98". After that he got into the more hardcore gabberish stuff to finish the nite off in fine style. Undoubtly the set of the nite. What was nice to see was after his set he took the mike and started thanking the crowd in his wonderful scottish acent which i loved :P .
Kev was up on next and continued the vibe with some more happy hardcore which kept the crowd happy. Still it was a strong crowd up for it(Perth has a habit of dying out after an internationals set). Next up was the man from Holland which I have never heard of but was eager to see..MIKE E. He was playing drum n bass but I thought this must of been the weirdest set I have ever heard in my life. At the start it started with drum n bass then all of a sudden I hear a classic hardcore song: TOYTOWN!!! being mixed into it. I was thinking did it say drum n bass or hardcore. He let the whole song play through then all of a sudden it went back to drum n bass. This happened on another occasion but with a hip hop or rap song. Wow. Thats all i had to say to that.
Hutcho was up next for some old skool. Crowd was dwindling but picked up later towards the second half of his set. Nice one though and MR W vs Puff rounded off this wicked fantastic nite with some techno. All in all this was one of the best raves and surely an event you would be sorry to miss.

the hellenic was the venue, with around 200 people at the map meet, upon arrival, the venue looked wicked, decor, lights and booming sound. getting the crowd started was dj dair, who mixed the latest happy traxs, then it was dj adrian sardi, which was apparently his first time playing to an all ages crowd. intially starting on a jazzy tip, and soon realising that the crowd wanted the dark hover-bass tracks, so he realigned and gave it to the people, mixed supurbly.

greg packer was up next, which was possible the best set on the night, playing 93 oldskool, which absolutley tore down the place, in addition mc kev was really going mental, and the atmosphere was wicked. dj kev had a great set, technically brillant and playing all the new happy stuff that people havn't had a chance to hear for some time, with (suprise) mc kenny l providing the hype. the night started early for the eager crowd, before midnight zanadu was nicely full.. troy, mrw and puff worked the crowd well, hungry for the tech beat, the crowd was the most up for it crowd i've seen for a while. jaun akins was the first feature dj to take control of the lime decks. playing a varied style from mellow funky sounds to harder tronics and back again, at this point the crowd was at its peak, and then the man most came to see, the Mills stepped up, and got straight into it with his trademark detroit style, and the place errupted.

Everything he did, the crowd cheered to and interacted, a special projection screen was setup upstairs displaying this incredible set.

Alot of people were contemplating whether this is possible by a mere human, as his energy and speed of mixing was mind boggling. His drum machine attics was a sight to see, Jeff Mills warped and flanged the beats as he so desired, and was an man soley commited to the music, not looking up, his sole purpose was to make everyone's body rock with his amazing 3 deck mixes and drum machine, he really showed why he is considered the worlds best dj, playing a 3 hour set, the atmosphere was intense, one of the best events, wicked time had by all, hopefully it won't be too long until he returns...

Arriving early and having a look around a venue I'd never been in before, I proceeded to go into northbridge with a few friends and came back at 11ish, when the crowd had started to pickup a little bit more, a lot of people chose to sit outside around the steps etc. Dan Lucas was on the decks when I got back playing some jumpup, the one thing I noticed was the sound system was probably a bit to big for that small room, as my ears where hurting from being in there, I went outside again to catchup with a few people, running into some old school friends etc, seems to be happening a lot of late.

Came back inside to catch a bit of Packer & Echoic's set, very dark and hard, probably a little bit to much for the younger crowd, following them was Frantik, who's set was probably the best of the night, I thought anyway, dropping a lot of fresh tracks, the crowd was still going strong for the main attraction they'd come to see, that being, DJ Ruffnut from melbourne, his set was good, but probably not for the all ages crowd, he went from jazzstep tracks to dark tracks and back again, never really sticking with the one element.

Muller followed Ruffnut, I believe Muller is one of Perth's underated DnB DJ's, every set I've seen him play has always been complete class, defintly a young DJ to watch out for, I listened to his set from outside, and as per usual it was slick mixing and tune selection. Up next was Krank, and I was tired and left at this point, all in all, a wicked night, big up's to M.F.I for another great party, looking forward to Lunasea with Atom1 playing.

Now I have to admit straight away, these 2 men are my favourite producers, so my review may be slightly biased. A lot of people in the Drum N Bass community of Perth have waited a long time to see this duo make a visit to Perth, so this was probably one of the biggest nights on the calender this year for a lot of people, both men have made a large impact on drum n bass and this was one you didn't wanna miss if you liked the hard and upfront sound.

When I got to Zanadu, there was nu skool breakz being played, and Rennie Pilgrim was going to be on until 2am, not a huge fan of nu skool breakz, but I did enjoy his set, and he did play some classic tunes like Dominator. Time did seem to fly though, and before I knew it, it was 2am, and Ed Rush & Optical where ready to tear it up, Ed Rush started the assult, the first hour of their set was unmistakeably good, with some excellent mixing, and a few dubplates, probably not as many as most punters expected, but can't have everything,

it seems though after 3, their set did go downhill, which was a shame, I don't know if they'd had a few to many drinks or what, but for the last hour it seemed neither of them bothered mixing, and when they did, it was bland and boring, which was a huge contrast from the beginning of their set where every tune was cut up.

All in all it was a good night, and I was just happy to of seen them play for the first time, it was nice to hear some of the new virus tunes as well like ressurection & pacman, absolutely tear out tracks, they finished their set on the same note as fierce though, playing the Sonar remix, from the soon to be realeased prototype LP I assume.

Getting to Renaissance fairly early to hopefully avoid huge lines (ala Mad Hatters Ball) I noticed there was people everywhere anyway, from the start this looked like it was going to be a huge one, and it defintly was, I started off in the plastik room, hoping it wouldn't get to packed for Richie Hawtin, but by 2am It was uncomfortbly packed, and I left, and went into the main room, to see sister bliss, now I have to admit, her set was a little bit to much Gatecrasher'ish, but it was still good, enough to keep everybody stomping, after sister bliss I thought I'd go back to the plastik room and see if it had cleared out any, but not to be, Richie Hawtin was still keeping the crowd packed in there, so I wandered back and went in for Dave Seamans set, his was a little bit more upbeat pumping trance, not as cheesy as sister bliss's, and the crowd was defintly responding like so, with everybody going hard right till the last beat, after Dave Seamans set, I was buggered and decided it was time to leave.

Other noteworthy sets on the night, where Greg Packers and Adam Freeland's nu skool breakz sets, both enjoyable sets, and anybody who didn't see them missed out.

one of the first hardcore nights of 2000, and it was good to see a healthy crowd getting down to some hardcore, mixed in with some drum'n'bass which further improved the flavour of the night. Greg Packer got things moving with a mixture of other artists and his own tracks, which are of world class quality, then it was Freestyle firing out the happy sound, mixed to perfection. Bass Generator stepped up and did he go off, getting straight into it with some stomping scottish hardcore. He looked like a manic man, really having a good time behind the consoles. this event was huge, 1800 people packed into zanadu, dj puff was setting the speed early on, with a slightly more mellow selection to his usual. Dave Chambers was the first international to strut his stuff, by that time the club had fully packed in, Chambers going hard 4 to the floor with his selection. This event had a great vibe, a very up-for-it crowd, great response to all the dj's. Heaven kept up the speed next, then brought it down a touch then straight back up, playing the classics and some quite different rock convert songs. Wicked night partying with the MoS dj's...

To a lot of people, their vision of an international DJ is that of a jet-setting, big headed, coke snorting, womanising egomaniac. Sometimes, this stereotype can be true. However, in the case of DJ Ratty, nothing could be further from the truth. Bear in mind the fact that this is the man who tore it up at all the classic Fantazia parties in the early nineties, the man who (almost) singlehandedly defined the dark jungle genre with his trademark sets at the Edge in Coventry and Pandamonium in 93/94. While nowadays the term 'dark drum and bass' is thrown around as a hallmark of what is hip and cool (a bit like Tommy Hilfiger or Ralph Lauren), back then, Ratty was a true pioneer. Which makes the fact that Ratty is such an honest, down to earth and eager to please international DJ all the more refreshing.

We arrived at Calibre just as B-Jam was beginning one of his trademark smooth sets which were a feature of the old Gravity nightclub on Friday nights a few years ago. The change from the slightly industrial feeling backroom to the very impressive frontroom, certainly aided the promoters in acheiving a good environment for the punters to enjoy the sounds of the future. This is perhaps the first time that a night soley dedicated to the sounds of drum and bass has occured in the frontroom, and hopefully won't be the last. It worked particularly well for two reasons, I believe. Firstly, the music itself sounded awesome coming from the excellent sound system that is an integral part of the front room. Without belittling the back room, the main room has perhaps one of the most exciting setups of any Perth club. Not only was the sound outstanding, but the lightshow was second to none. Secondly, the crowd fresh to this room seemed to enjoy the experience. There was no sign of any of the pumped up 'roid freaks in tight black shirts (no offence to anyone like that of course), like the old nights at the Globe. It's the seediness factor which had become prevelant in the front room which spoiled my previous visits there. All in all, the surroundings were perfect for a great night.

B-Jam wound down a very effective set which laid the foundations for a young man whom I've heard a lot about, but I'd never quite gotten around to seeing DJ. Adrian Sardi is a DJ who comes with a hearty endorsement than none other than Greg Packer (that's good enough for me). I can now see why. Every now and then, you hear a DJ who just makes sense. That might seem like a strange statement, but I'm sure anyone who has heard him play will understand. I'm often sceptical about the term programming, for DJ's.

Whilst it is great for a set to be a 'journey', I personally beleive that the most important thing is the dancefloor. Well, Mr Sardi did both. And well, very well. His set progressed from funky, almost jazzy yet danceable drum and bass, through to the blood and thunder dark fare which is currently so popular on the dancefloors. As the hour of Ratty's entrance came closer, Adrian Sardi lifted the stakes and implored the dancefloor respond, which they did with great zest.

As Ratty stepped up, the buzz amongst the now heaving crowd was quite obvious. What Ratty proceeded to do over the next couple of hours, probably ranks as just about the finest live set I've ever heard from a touring international DJ. He chopped, cut, scratched, pasted and faded just as a top hip hop DJ would, all to the upfront sounds of drum and bass. This was no ordinary set, and the crowd were just aching for every scratch and mix. When he finally dropped a copy of the all time classic 'Champion Sound' updated for the new millenium, the rewinds came thick and fast.

Ratty finished his set at somewhere near 4am, without losing a single soul from the dancefloor, everyone I'm sure, feeling that there money was already well spent. The night however, did not finish there. DJ Krank proceeded to keep the dancefloor heaving until DJ Karnage and DJ Finesse finished off the night back to back with a set of up-front killers.

In summary, this was an unbelievable set from an international and Ratty has certainly firmly eastablished himself as one of my all time heroes. All I can say is, check out the CD when it becomes available.

I didn't attend DJ SS last year while he was in Perth, but listened from the outside, and in my opinion it was a disapointing set, but I decided I would go see what he had to offer this year. I arrived early at Zanadu, with Klay back and playing atmospheric, following Klay where Frantik and Viper back to back, playing a nice hard set and setting the tone for the dancefloor, Frantik also throwing in a couple of his own tunes for good measure.

Up next and playing the set prior to SS was Qball, hem played a very deep and dark set, and it got the dance floor moving, then SS stepped up, the place started to fill, his selection and mixing was brilliant and Zanadu was rammed, SS was suppose to play from 2 - 4 but he played for near on 3 hours to a absolutely packed floor, WarrenG was on his side the whole time hyping the crowd, only real downside, was WarrenG called way to many rewinds, and after 2 hours it became annoying when every few tunes was a rewind.

Aside from that, a great night was had by all.

On a side note, I could still hear the music clearly from the main room at the Perth train station.

Upon arriving and being greeted by several familiar faces I was warned of sweltering conditions inside of The, Grosvenor, but nothing prepared me for the heat as I entered the venue. It must have been at least 50 degrees celcius, when I got in and rising.

Apparently Grosvenor was suppose to fix the air conditioning, so It wasn't Loaded Dice's fault.

Greg Packer and Adrian Sardi where going back to back when I got in, both with mixing to perfection and, Lots of dark hard tunes which had a few of the true hardcore dancing,

their set was 2 hours and finished at, 2, with the pale young DJ Fierce stepping up behind the decks, everybody tried their best to dance despite the awful conditions inside.

DJ Fierce played a swag of hot dubplates with everybody waiting to see what was next, eventually at 3:30am MC Method announced if everybody wanted to we could move to Calibre and Fierce would finish off there.

So arriving at Fierce the sweaty massive waited to hear the news, with the verdict being No Fierce due to the fact of Wild West being on, a majority headed home, but several hung around in hope he would be on later, at about 5am, someone from Calibre announced Fierce would in fact be playing from 5:30 to 6:30, and he surely did, tearing it up with some rough tunes the early morning massive went hard till 7am.

Saturday afternoon and rumours were rife. Vibes was moving to an indoor venue in the city, Vibes was cancelled. The storm clouds had everyone worrying, and in an unusual twist scalpers were selling tickets way below cost price for fear of the gig raining out.

Impressively enough, the fact that the weather held all afternoon and evening seemed to add an extra element of cheer to the event. The only repercussion was the high level of anti-water pistol sentiment; these toys were frowned upon, with many groovers entering into a state of high panic whenever a rogue water drop happened to hit them. Overall, bubble guns were much more in vogue.

The Vibes tribes had an array of funky 'tings to split their time between. There were three main areas, the Main Stage, the Fat Fluid Umbrella Lounge, and The Loaded Dice Casino Royale. There were also skaters, stalls, and the popular inflatable Lynx Tent, which featured a fine selection of generally anonymous jocks, keeping the bar area chilled right out.

The day began with General Justice, whose positive vibes proved a perfect introduction. The Fat Fluid lounge fired up with Nathan J delving into his dusty collection of breaks, and with Urban Breaks' Mr Tsang, and Funk Tank to follow, it was time to find a deck chair and feel the bottom end. The bottom was there for all to beholds in the Loaded Dice tent, as Mike L's tight fusion of d 'n' b and breaks preluded Ransom's tight set of chunky beets. This lead into John Stapleton's train wrecked selection of eclectic warblings. Not as bad as it sounds, honest.

Next up on the Main Stage was the Milk Crate Crew, whose tastes ranged from disco-edged funk to the occasional hip-hop lyric, a diversity of sound that was popular with the stream of people now beginning to arrive. It was Raw Funk, though, who first imbued that happening Vibes feel into the amphitheatre. Raw Funk are a collection of DJ's who offered the crowd everything from light funk to soulful sounds to vocal house all in a row. Thanks to them, the mood of the day started to amp up and buzz with that energetic electro feeling...

The Scratch Perverts pounded onto the stage, knocked out the crowd with some hard basslines and got the first real dancefloor moments thumping with some choicely-placed Beastie Boys action. A popular and original set full

of, you guessed it, some excellent examples of scratching. Their post-mainstage set in the Umbrella Lounge provided more technical entertainment for those with an itch to scratch, vying for pole position with Trey, who gave her reclining audience a verbal lashing with Perth DMC, Selekt on the cut.

Rhibosome took off on the main stage with an opening sound that was all disco before continuing on their unpredictable eclectic way. With some smooth DJ mixing and sequencing, and impressive live percussion on stage, Rhibosome held the crowds attention easily, making way for mainstage highlight Ashley Beedle. A lot of people seemed to be waiting for Ashley Beedle and his set, which was scheduled to be one of the longest mainstage performances. His eclectic sets are backed up with the timing and technique of a master, and his furious Latin percussion elements gave way to rarer grooves without losing momentum.

The Ku-ling Brothers continued along their groove-based path, impressing the crowd with their live electronic sound and laidback atmosphere. Full credit points to Melbourne DJ Phil Ransom, whose scratching brought a fresh taste and extra edge to an already strong set.

As the sun was setting everyone's favourite man took the stage. Norman Jay was the king of Vibes; he offered everything danceable to the crowd, from hip-hop to reggae in one smooth blend of sound, and they loved it. The view from on high was one of colour and groove as thousands of people took to the grass-based dancefloor below. His mixing has improved, but Norman Jay seemed to give the crowd little more than what they were expecting.

Next up was the live crew Faze Action, who offered a Morrocan funkfest of Samba style rhythms that changed the atmosphere to one of lazy evening moves, with the crowd mellowing comfortably. Their live format was an ideal way to provide more immediate interaction with the rapidly growing crowd, but was tainted slightly by the lack of live strings, which were produced electronically, so this characteristic element barely differed from the album cuts. Check out their latest LP, Moving Cities, and see what we mean. There were some highlights though, like the first strains of their Plans and Designs hit, In The Trees, and the totally likable character of Zeke Manikwa on vocals.

Adam Freeland seemed a low key choice for wind-up DJ. Everyone expects a festival to end with a frenzy of hardcore dancing and Freeland's breakbeat choices didn't quite match this expectation (and it seems, ill-deserved reputation), as well as the fact that the sound for his set was far from loud enough. But overall it was still a strong effort that obviously impressed people; the finale saw the stage crammed with enthusiastic funksters, and he was more than happy to accept the present of a fresh banana from a well-satisfied dancer.

Overall, the weather held and the people who came were rewarded with a day of eclectic sounds that more than satisfied any punters appetite for outdoor grooving. Don't take events like this for granted, Perth. You won't find many like them in your travels.

Mercifully, there was no queue for entry on this miserable rainy night; walking into the thunderous sounds of Diamond D, one's first thought was "This is a sick club for a jungle night." The venue leaves little to be desired, it's great to have drum and bass somewhere other than a large room, although it is a bit of a neck-crane to see the DJ from the dancefloor. Carrying on from D's pulverising biz Adrian Sardi took the warm-up spot and eased into Low Rider from Ganja Kru, one of the least frantic tunes to be heard this night allowing some breath to be caught. Pretty soon though, Adrian snuck up with the hard mix, once again giving the crowd want they wanted. Certainly the crowd was rocking although with some of the reticence that seems to characterise Perth d'n'b international events before the headliner steps on. With the battle cry going up from MC Fearless at 2am, Kenny Ken got right in the mix, but not before two odd needle jumps, one necessitating a reload. Fearless also paid immediate respect to fallen comrades with an 'RIP Stevie Hyper D!' Kenny has been at the top of the pile for a while so he's been able to push his take on the sound in the direction he wants, while paying heed to the fact that people want tear-out tunes when they come to see him.

This set was an extension of the sounds that were developing through his set here last year. Gone are the wobbly wild bass pitching and overt hip-hoppery; instead relentless growling sub-bass with really toughened up breaks informed the majority of his set. Thrown in was another remix of the SS classic Lighter, as well as the Andy C dark defining tune Valley Of The Shadows, which had maximum impact. Fearless kept up a torrent of off-kilter exhortations to boogie, which verged on gobbledygook at times, but could still be deliriously fun. Thank God for the reasonably minimal number of reloads, which should only ever be called by the crowd. And the mixing was tight, ticking like a time bomb, no question about that. Overall Kenny showed that he can infect a party with the energy of his music, and continue to develop his style to keep it fresh. Wicked party, let the Drum Club roll.

Auxilliary was one of the first all ages events of the new millenium, with a all star local lineup, including a comeback from P.A Fanatik. The night kicked off with Splink-E playing a old school set to get everyone into the mood for a long hard night, and he delivered the goods as usual, following Splink-E was Internatty & Kaiser playing back to back ragga jungle, with the dancefloor still alit from Splink-E the bouncing ravers continued on until Greg Packer took over on the decks, with everybody cramming in for his set it looked like the police may of wanted to close it down for overcrowding, but once everyone was back in it was fine, and the night continued with Greg tearing the place apart as usual, setting the stage for the comeback of Fanatik. Fanatik started with a calm intro, then worked into some gut wrenching dark drum n bass, and finally finishing with some gabber to get everybody stomping.

Following Fanatik was one of perth's up n coming drum n bass Dj's, Frantik, starting his set with one of his own labels (that being Hard Afro) tunes, playing everything from jumpup to darkside he had the crowd moving, dropping a dubplate from local perth producer Static, and then finishing with one of his own tunes. Next up was Hutcho & Kev back to back with some melodic trance, working their way into some hardcore, and finishing with some stompin trancecore. Rounding off the night was Puff and Mrw, playing separate set's of relentless techno, the dancefloor was still going hard right until Mrw's very last tune.
