Greg Packer Soul Fuel

Greg Packer has been a source of pride and inspiration for the Australian drum and bass scene since the sound first arrived here. He brings a stunning mix of the best in soulful, groovy drum & bass with ‘Soul Fuel’, Inertia Recordings first DJ mix album!

His series of stunningly mixed tapes in the mid 90s spread far and wide all over the country, pricking up the ears of promoters and DJs everywhere…
Winner of West Australian Dance Music Awards’ best rave DJ 1994, best mixer 1995, best drum & bass DJ 1996 and every year onwards until 2002 as well as being the only D&B DJ in the 2003 and 2004 Technics inthemix Top 50 - it’s only recently Greg Packer’s skills as a DJ have been eclipsed by his production success.
Signing over 40 tracks to labels like LTJ Bukem’s Good Looking, Doc Scott’s 31 Records, Jon B’s Tangent, Defunked and a host of others, Greg has paved the way for all Australian drum and bass artists receiving overseas attention.

These days, with the rise of the more soulful, deeper style of drum and bass championed by Fabio, the music is hitting Greg harder than ever - “I’ve always liked my darkside and still like certain hard aggressive drum and bass tracks but my favourite producers are those that are making music with really strong beats and heavy bass but also more soulful sounds, more groove, so it’s music you can either listen to or go out and dance hard to - I think that combination of sounds is brilliant.”

‘Soul Fuel’ is a stunning mix of just that… the best of soulful, groovy, drum & bass. Featuring tracks from the up and coming prodigy on London Elektricity’s Hospital label, High Contrast. Plus the anthem “Breeze” from XRS featuring the vocals of the distinctive Cleveland Watkiss. Not to mention some of Greg’s own productions featuring MC Shureshock and MC Assassin.

Greg Packer’s history

Greg Packer began dj-ing in the summer of 1989 whist still living in Northampton, England, as his intense passion for collecting vinyl resulted in him purchasing decks and a mixer

Greg immigrated to Australia’s west coast in 1990 and began wowing punters Perth nightclubs in 1990 mixing up a combination of early house, techno with hip hop and early breaks. He won 1991’s West Australian DMC’s contest with his sublime mixing skills. And held onto the title for the state for a second year in ’92.

So began his slew of accolades from the West Australian Dance Music awards every year, including Best Rave DJ 1994, Best Mixer 1995, Best Drum & Bass DJ 1996- 2002.

Greg was also West Australia’s first DJ to play drum & bass and the first Dj to mix live on Triple J back in 1994.

The logical next step was taking his experience behind the decks to a wider audience by producing his own tracks. After testing his studio creations to packed dance floors and positive reactions he then decided to give his music to visiting international DJs and the Greg Packer name became synonymous with quality tunes and featured in the record boxes of drum & bass DJs from London to Brazil.

Long time friend and drum & bass wizard LTJ Bukem encouraged Greg to send his productions to label across the globe. Carl Collins from the Hardleaders label was the first to sign one of Greg’s tracks “We Hear Drumz” in 2001. Good Looking frontman LTJ Bukem took the second track “Touch Me” in 2001 and John B took Greg’s third track “You’re The One / Wake Up” for his new label Tangent. Greg was well and truly on his way by now and has been pivotal in the drum & bass scene in Perth and Australia as a whole. Greg has gone on to release music on labels like Phuturistic Bluez & Phuturo (USA) Defunked, Chihuahua, Gain, G2 Records, and tracks soon to be mixed on labels such as Canvas (USA), New Identity, Jerona Fruits and Renegade.

Greg is re launching his label Interphase to release his own vinyl singles. The first single– “Hots Pants / I’ll be right there” will be the first official release.
