Klaus ‘Heavyweight’ Hill interview

You are originally from London, what prompted your move to Sydney and how are you liking it here ?
My wife is Australian, from Sydney. Me met while she was traveling in England and we decided to come out for 6 months as I had never met her family and she wanted me to see where she grew up. That was 14 months ago and we are still here!!!  The both of us really love England and London, but the change of lifestyle here in Australia has appealed to us at this time in our lives.

In terms of releases and remixes what are you working on at the moment and what releases are soon out ?
I’m always working, it never stops. I have my label, Title Fight, to keep running which has a release every 6 weeks alongside my remix work. Work to keep an eye out for are my remixes of Atomic Hooligans 7/10 Split, Platinum Mules Roc Wide and my latest Title Fight single entitled Deep Space and Bassline & Tempo. I am also an in demand sound engineer and am currently working with Felix Da House Cat on two new albums and various other projects he has lined up for the next 18 months.

Having seen the development of the breaks scene in London and its subsequent growth around the world what do you think is the main ingredient for its success? And do you think its going from here?
Its accessibility and the girls in the club!!!! Guys are not going to go clubbing if there are no girls shaking it. When breaks first started in London it was like Drum and Bass’ little brother, music for train spotter boys, dark and moody. But the influence of house producers on the scene brought a whole new dimension to the music and it brought the ladies!!!  Breaks has to have soul and groove, not just a bunch of nasty noises pretending to be music. This is the ingredient that has taken breaks from a back room to the main room in some the world’s best clubs, and as long as people are dancing and enjoying the music the scene will continue to grow. The scene just keeps getting bigger; with countries all over the world experience what I experienced when I first heard this music and because of that I think it can only get stronger.

As a producer yourself who inspires you musically?
Nine Inch Nails, Depech Mode, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Rush are main stream bands and artists that have had a massive influence one me. From the world of dance music people like Photek, Dave Clarke, Marshal Jefferson, Carl Craig, Dillinja, Optical, the list can go on forever, I love music in all its forms.

How do you rate the Australian breaks scene and who do you think will do well internationally?
Australian artist are all ready doing really well abroad. Acts like Infusion and Phil K are touring the world and letting people know about the scene here in Oz. Kid Kenobi is an obvious choice as he has the respect of all the worlds top breaks producers and DJ’s and has already been taking clubs in the UK by storm when he tours. I still rate Nubreed highly, there live show is one of the best dance live acts I have seen, Out of the new DJ’s and producers I have seen and heard since I have  been here Bass Kelph is doing some good stuff, and a DJ called Lynt in Melbourne has been one of the best breaks DJ’s I have seen in a very long time.

From a DJ perspective what do you regard as the most important ingredients in a great set?
Beer!!!! No, on a serious note it’s the crowd. Too many DJ’s forget that they are there to entertain the crowd who has paid there hard earned money to see them. If you get the crowd involved, show them you are enjoying the music you play, not just going though the motions they will come on that journey with you and you will both have a great time. Tight mixing is another ingredient as well. It’s all very well playing tunes, but if u can’t mix them seamlessly then you should not be up there!!! Too many producers turn there hand to DJ’in cos it seems a natural progression, but really can’t mix. Nothing worse then seeing a poor DJ.

Klaus will be appearing at Ministry of Sound ‘Sessions’ - 5 Jun.
