State of Mind Interview
First thing, how did you lads get aquainted? We pretty much met up through the local dnb scene. We had a few friends in common and soon enough started messing about playing a few records and trying to write some tunes. It just sorta snowballed from there.
Who have your main musical influences been? Hard to say really, growing up on a diet of grunge rock like soundgarden, nirvana and nine inch nails + a whole bunch of eighties shockers we wont name, has defiantly had a strong influence. I guess dnb wise probably total science.
At the moment, many eyes in the drum and bass world are fixed on the Australasia region due to the success of acts like Concord Dawn, Bulletproof and Pendulum. Has that success been a great motivator for you? Yeah sure. I mean, seeing someone like concord dawn at their first gig progress to where they are now is defiantly a motivator. They showed us that you can still ‘make it’ even if your not based in the UK. The continuing success of bulletproof and Pendulum are proof of that too.
Describe in one sentence what a crowd can expect from a trademark SOM set. Come and see and find out…
Top 5 tunes that are killing it for you guys? In no particular order, Matrix and Futurebound- Strength to Strength, Chase and Status- Duppy Man, Body and Soul- My dues, J Majik & Wickaman- Raging Bull, and SOM – Money Train.
Our most memorable night out playing was… Resolution 05. Mud, glowsticks and dance music…crazy.
What is your all time favourite dnb tune? Ed Rush and Optical- The Shinning (Serum RMX)
What dnb projects would you like to complete in the next few years? It’d be cool to try and put together a sort of live electronic dnb act, in the same sorta way that people like the chemical brothers do it. We’ve done a few gigs along those lines before, but we still haven’t refined the method so to speak. Obviously a label of our own would be plus, and doing some collaborations with other artists is defiantly on the cards.
How do you feel about the state of dnb at the moment? Pretty good I guess. Its hard to say, because the scene in NZ or at least Auckland were we are is going through a tough time…but in general, in terms of the music itself, I think its better than ever.
The best thing that could happen to me would be… Lotto.
