- You traveled overseas a fair bit this year, can you tell us a bit about that and where you played ? Did you see anyone new when you were overseas that particularly caught your ear ?
Yeah I played in the States in April and Shureshock and I played throughout the UK in July. The UK tour was paticularly amazing. We had some great club gigs aswell as playing some large festvals. The support from Australians over there was brilliant too.
- From your time overseas how would you say the standard of Australian weekly clubnights and events compares to those overseas ?
Australia is totally on par. I think the idea that we are somehow behind or out of touch with the rest of the world is now a pretty outdated one.
- Whats happening for KK on the production front ?
I'm spending as much time in the studio as possible. Workig on my own stuff aswell as getting in the studio with other people. It's been lots of fun.
- You are probably one of the widest traveling Australian DJ’s, can you tell us a bit about the development of the scene in regional areas where you have been going ? How educated are the people getting ?
Regional areas are great. I like the fact that often there may be only one main club in the town or city so everyone goes out and parties there. It breaks down a lot of barriers and makes it quite fun. The DJ’s are totally up to date with what’s happening but you don’t often get the muscial snobbery you find in smaller ‘scenes’ of bigger cities which is totally refreshing.
- You have just released the KK Sessions CD for MoS can you tell us a little bit about the process of recording a mix CD ? How many tracks do you request for the mix and how many do you actually get to use ? Was this a studio mix or recorded live somewhere ? Were Shureshocks vocals overlaid or recorded at the same time as the mix ?
It probably takes about three months from when you very start to when you hand in the mix. You probably request about 50 or 60 tracks to start up with because not all of them get licensed. It’s always a very anxious time wating to see what is cleared and what isn’t. I always do my mixes as a studio mix rather than as a live thing. Shureshock wrote vocals for all the tunes and he laid them down on the mix separately in a couple of sessions. We then went through all the vocals and chose the best and moved them about etc. etc. It’s a rather long process all up.
- Tell us a little about your partnership with Shureshock. Where did you two meet ? What would you say are the most important qualities of a good MC/vocalist ?
We met through a mutual friend of ours Jane Slingo who is also our manager. We started working togther a bit after we did the first Ministry comp and slowly its got to a point where we are doing every gig together. The great thing about Cam as a vocalist is his diversity – from rapping to ragga to singing – as well as his acute understanding of the music and knowing where vocals will work and where they won’t. He’s also a great performer so I feel pretty lucky to be working with him.
