Tom Novy Interview
Although better known by many as a place of oompah bands and lederhosen, Munich also has plenty to brag about when it comes to house music. One of its best-known DJs and producers is Tom Novy, who first started working the city's club circuit as a teenager in the late '80s. He has since strutted his stuff at some of Europe's most celebrated venues and festivals and made a telling impact on dance charts worldwide.
Can you give us current top 10 hits? Some of the newest hits are: New Eurythmics track, Mad 8 “Sleepless Night” (Work this pussy edit) Sesso Mato “I Need Somebody” (Tom Novy remix), Paranovy “New Dimension”, Recorder 1(white label), Dave McCullin “Bitch”, Who Is Who “Not So Dirty”, Tom Novy “Take It”, Picadilly Circus “Williams”, “Your Body” Paul Harris remix, Rockabilly (white label) Novy and Bihil remix. Being from a techno dominated country like Germany, was it hard to forge a career with a house basis? I would not say Germany is at all a techno dominated country. That is a misconception. Sure there is a techno scene here, but house is just as dominate. I have been spinning House Tunes for 20 years…there are many artists like me who have been into the house scene for just as long, even longer.
Can you tell us about your involvement with MTV Germany? I was a host for 2 shows for MTV Germany. One was “Dance Floor Charts” and the other, “Street life”. I’ve been with MTV since 2000. It has been a great ride for me. It is not the first time I have been on the other side of the microphone though. I started out with a radio show before that in 1995. I actually still have my own show on the radio…”Energy Novy Night” (NRJ 93.3) in Germany, but honestly if I had to choose, I prefer doing TV. I enjoy TV because it allows me to give house music a voice. It takes me a little outside the music industry…into another world of entertainment.
How is the club scene in Germany and where are the happening areas for house music? The club scene is Germany is HUGE. There are many good clubs all over the country that play House music. I think people must be surprised to hear that. The German House scene is really happening, especially at this moment. We are the leaders of the Minimal House movement. Labels like Poker Flat, Get Physical and Kompkct are known all over the world for this style and so are my German buddies like Steve Bug, Tiefschwarz, and DJ Hell. This is definitely a country to watch. There are many innovators here. I am proud to be a part of it. My style of House Music is a little bit different, but you can make up your own mind when I come to Australia.
Your last 2 singles have done well on Australian radio, and the past tracks of yours have also done well here. Why has it taken so long for you to come to Australia to perform? Oh there must be several reasons. I am a diva, I am too expense, I like my 5 super model groupies, my 5 star hotels, slippers by the bed and a limo at the airport…maybe this will answer your question. Obviously I am kidding. I am thrilled to spend 2 weeks touring Australia. Ministry of Sound (Australia) has been working hard to set up this tour. I have a great team supporting me there. I suppose things happen when they are meant to happen. Now is the right time and I am looking forward to showing Australia what I am made of. I have always heard, once you get to Australia you don’t want to leave… It is about time I got there and I hope to keep coming back!
Are you someone that records and tinkers regularly or do you need to feel inspired? Let me just say, the studio is always open, 24/7…
Can you tell us about your recording process? Do you work with a studio engineer or do you have your own studio? I have my own studio with my partner, Adrian. He is the engineer freak and I’m the one bringing in the creative ideas and songs. There is a strong synergy between us. We have been friends for a very long time and seem to be the perfect couple to produce cheesy house tracks. J No honestly, the relationship obviously has to be strong as we are spending countless hours together in the studio, and like I said…its open 24/7. It’s all about the creative process…always trying out new sounds, new beats, new melodies, with the goal of creating the next global mega hit!
