Dj Format Interview
DJ Format has been around for a while. Straight out of Brighton Format made a name for himself through his contributions to the Return of the DJ and the Lessons series. Since then, Format has kept doing his thing and released his first album in early 2000s, 'Music for the Mature Bboy', showcasing his production skills to the fullest and teaming up with soon-to-be partner Abdominal as well as members of J5 and those funny boys from Aspects. Following the fairly unexpected success of the LP, Format was sent back to the studio for his follow up, 'If you can't join em... beat em', which is being released this month. Roping in Abdominal, Charly 2na and Akil once more as well as new Canadian addition D-Sisive, this new LP sees Format continue doing what he does best, producing funky, break-full hip hop with a cut and paste touch you can't resist. As they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it! So we caught up with the man for a brew and a chat in January this year and found out what he's been up to, what the album's like, why he is not really good at scratching and also if his sister really is that good looking.
You were out here last year as part of Good Vibrations, what have you been up to in the interim ? Touring around the uk to promote the new album 'if you can't join em.. beat em'
So tell us a little bit about this ucoming tour ? Well its just me on my own this time, no emcees … i'm gonna be on my own just playing some party hip hop and funk
It seems that you inject a bit of humour into your music, do you find hip-hop a bit too serious at times ? Well i'm a happy-go-lucky sort of bloke who likes a good laugh and i guess that it just comes out in my music. its probably a rare thing in hip hop these days and that's a shame because people take themselves too seriously. i take my music very seriously but still enjoy myself and have fun doing it Do you have a
Do you have a general philosophy behind your performances ? i just want people to have fun, enjoy themselve's and be entertained at my show's. if i'm doing a live show with abdominal & d-sisive then i want it to be fast paced, lively and sometimes humourous and if its just me djing, i want to make sure everyone's dancing and feeling the music.
So what can Perth crowds expect from you ? i will be playing party hip hop and generaly up-tempo funk based music for everyone to dance to which will incorporate all sorts of new and old music
Will you be bringing any new music from you with you on this tour ? A few bits and pieces but i'll be starting work on my next album when i get back home in january.
Whats the craziest thing that’s happened whilst you have been djing ? lots of things, most of them have happened..needles breaking, mixer breaking, speakers breaking, bad sound so that i can't hear what i'm doing.
So do you normally hang out at the events that you play at ? Sometimes sometimes … I always have a couple of drinks, sometimes not. i usually like to listen to the dj or band before me to get in the mood and get inspired by some good music.
