Future Prophecies Interview
Future Prophecies, aka Richard Animashaun Thomas & Tony Anthun are Drum & Bass artists from Norway. They perform as a DJ/live (Hybrid Session) act comprising of jazz musicians and DJs, culminating in a new sound breaking traditional musical barriers. Their extensive knowledge stems from relentless work as club DJs and jazz musicians throughout Norway, the rest of Europe and the States. Having had releases on Subtitles, Renegade Hardware, Breakbeat Kaos ,Moving Shadow, Certificate 18, Outbreak, Fabric Live 03 (DJ Hype), Boombox and Kickin, and remixes with Mari Boine/Universal and Jamelia/EMI, they are a force to be reckoned with. They are also starting their own label in the summer 2004.
Their sets, usually when not straight DJ-ing, consist of turntablism, computers, and live acts on different settings working with drums, saxophone, human beat box, synths, vocalists and tabla.
"Our music philosophy is not to have any boundaries. We try to make what feels good at any given moment. Our aim is to create a freedom to do what we want. Our influences come from all genres; r&b, pop, rock, jazz, indian, breakbeat, techno, house, and we believe people shouldn't forget where they are coming from. A lot of people out there diss other styles, even before they really have checked it out, just to follow some kind of trend. We feel that there is a lot of good (and bad) music in all genres - so why miss out on the good stuff just for the sake of fitting in with the scene? We try to blend all kind of styles in our music, be it saxophone, flute, vocals, tabla, guitar and so on. But in the end whatever we do, the main thing is to achieve a kind of sensation, a feel that this is it - the moment".
Hi guys, or whichever one of you I'm talking to. What's been happenin in the last few weeks or so for you? Been working on some new tracks. Been out playing in the weekends all over europe, Russia. Working on bookings. Our live set is getting thighter. Solving some major computer problems. Planning our new album. Working on getting our label Berzerk goin. First release is scheduled april.
Have you been using any new/different equipment on stage lately? Not really. We´re already using software as reason, logic, traktor/final scratch and ableton live in our live performance. Also using midi controllers and turntables to control the programs. It´s more about knowing what you got than learning new stuff every week. Also to bring computers and programs live it´s important that it´s as stable as possible.
How would you say your sets differ today from, say, a year ago? We´re always polishing our dj/live approach and making it more complex. I think it´s becoming more intense. We´ve shortened and mashed a lot of tracks. We´re also experimenting doin vocal stuff live.
What's the production work schedule for the next few months? We´re putting a dreadlock vip/rmx togheter. Gonna work on a new album. Make new tracks for our new label Berzerk. Gonna make some new HipHop tracks.
Any other particular goals/plans you want to achieve by the year's end? Just make the business run even better. Finnish the album and make Berzerk running smoothly with steady releases.Get a lot of bookings. Make our real live project up and running properly, with drummer and bassplayer and maybe a guitar player also. Getting even more HipHop beats goin. Getting it down with some MC´s live and in production.
