Dj Kriece Interview
Kriece has been a permanent fixture on Australia's party scene now for over 10 years. As a DJ he has played alongside such names as Sasha, John Digweed, James Zabiela, Carl Cox, BT, Dave Seaman, Dave Clarke and Lee Burridge. He has played at all major Australian tours such as Ministry of Sound, Cream, Renaissance, Gatecrasher, Mixmag and DJ Mag. Recently he has been Dj’ing around Asia, including a memorable gig at Womb in Tokyo.
So you are the quiet achiever of Perth producers, for those that may not know can you tell us a little about your label and some of your recent releases and remixes? I recently launched my label Kindred Sounds. The first release was We Make Contact by The Flying Doctors (James Zabiela, Jeff Bennett & me) with an Oliver Lieb remix on the flip. Coming soon on Kindred are tracks & remixes by Hakan Lidbo, Infusion, D-Nox & Beckers, Jeff Bennett and myself plus heaps more.
I also have a track with Basek coming soon on Nic Fanciulli's label "Saved" and I'm currently working out an EP for a new sub label of Plastic City in Germany. Plus a few other remixes & originals on some other labels.
I also have my digi-only label Arabica which is on Beatport, DJ Download & Juno Digital. I set up this label mainly to give some up and coming producers an outlet for quality material and also to release some of the tracks I have which dont have the right sound for Kindred.
You have also recently had your bootleg of Aphex Twin featured on James Zabielas Renaissance Mix Cd tell us how that came about? I originally made that track just to play out in my sets but I usually share everything with James (musically that is - not undies or women or anything). He started playing it in all his sets and it was getting a really good reaction so Renaissance tried to license it for his "Utilities" mix and much to our general surprise it was allowed by Aphex Twin & Warp records.
How often do people spell Kriece wrong? Far too often - I am aghast at how the basic concept of "I before E except after C" has been forgotten by many.
For other aspiring producers out there can you let us know some of the ways that you have been able to network and start getting releases? MSN, AIM and other instant messaging programs are by far the most important networking tool for someone as geographically remote as I am here in Perth.
Until recently I was religious about building my network of contacts through MSN & AIM. However I have over 200 contacts now on MSN alone and it is getting a bit time consuming so i have started to cut back a bit on when I go on.
News is afoot also that you are about to start a clubnight at Geisha, the first one on March 24, can you tell us a bit about that, and how did you manage to extract Mrw from his self-imposed retirement? The night at Geisha has come about due to a few reasons. I am going to be touring a bit more this year so i wanted somewhere to try out new tracks.
Also, myself & MRW believe there is a serious gap in the Perth scene for a semi-regular house & techno night.
What is the aim for the night and how often do you see it happening? No grand plans for the night - I just want to push quality music that is not being played elsewhere at the moment and if all goes well I would like to eventually do it monthly or 6 weekly.
We are told that you are about to head overseas to Europe, the US and South America for some gigs, can you tell us a little about that, and where are some of the places you are playing? I'm still setting up some of the gigs but so far i am playing London (Turnmills & Retox), Dublin, New York (with Jeff Bennett), Florida, San Francisco, Denver, Cancun, Paraguay, Lima, Buenos Aires & Brasil.
One gig I am really looking forward to especially is the High Tide party in Southhampton UK which will do an Australia v UK thing with myself and Phil K versus James Zabiela & Tom Budden.
