Dj Fierce Interview
After serving his initial apprenticeship in the studios of the legendary No-U-Turn records alongside drum and bass luminaries Nico, Ed Rush and Optical, he went on to be signed to Grooverider's Prototype Label at the tender age of 17 years old. Since then, he has produced tunes for many highly regarded labels in the industry including Moving Shadow, Bad Company Recordings, Renegade Hardware and Virus to worldwide acclaim.
2001 saw Fierce move into the next strata with the launch of his own label Quarantine, with the first release being the the almighty "Innocence" Produced with DJ Fresh. Described by many as the label that "is bringing the dark funk back to the dancefloor".
As a DJ, Fierce is second to none, bringing unbridled energy and explosive turntable firepower to the dance floor front. With a hectic tour schedule and an even busier production schedule, DJ Fierce has found time to return to down under for another highly anticipated tour to promote the forthcoming Quarantine album "Dominion" due out at the end of 2006
What were your first introductions to drum and bass? 11 or 12 years old I used to listen to pirate stations like Touchdown FM, Kool FM, Don FM and Kiss 100. Kiss wasn't a pirate but they used to play reinforced exclusives on the specialist shows. I loved that and recorded them all then went out to try and find the records.
Can you describe for us the most significant moments in your time in drum and bass so far that have made you want to carry on your career in this ever-changing industry/genre? Nico giving me a job at No U-Turn; that’s an important one. The whole thing is of great significance really I’ve met a lot of good friends during the years and that along with having a reason for doing it all is what makes you need to carry on.
What is the underlying concept behind your label Quarantine? To release the sickness.
For the upcoming LP "Dominion", you have sought the production help of some amazing dnb composers such as Break, Silent Witness and D-Bridge. What can the dnb world expect from this release from your Quarantine camp? Something beautiful.
You have been nicknamed in Knowledge magazine as the "King of the Collaborators" because of all the success you have had with combining studio know-how on beats with heavyweights such as Ed Rush, Cause 4 Concern and Fresh. Do you feel that this has taken your production skills to a new level? I bring my sounds and ideas down to the studio, we work a beat out, I might play a bass line…We combine our ideas and sounds and working with producers like this is why the ideas sound so good. Ed Rush is also a collaborator, he works best with other people. In your opinion, who should we be watching out for at the moment, in terms of production and DJing? If you’re not already watching for them you should be looking for Break, Silent Witness and Survival.
