Sound Advice Interview

The Sound Advice DJs are one of the hottest acts going around. With their residency at Sydney’s number one breaks club, Chinese Laundry, they’ve helped carve the Sydney sound in recent times. Moxx and Steve, began their journey as two soccer buddies who developed their passion for music together whilst having the reputation for partying in front and behind the decks. With roots in tech and progressive house, they were inspired by the local breaks sound being pushed by the likes of Kid Kenobi and began experimenting in the genre. Four years from their humble beginnings sees them at the forefront of Sydney’s music scene.

KarlSav: How did you guys form the Sound Advice Dj’s?
Steve (Sound Advice DJs): We played in the same soccer team and both were into the same music. We both Dj’d so we thought it we good to combine our efforts. We started Djing out and about at parties before a few of us put together a night called “Sound Advice”, thus the name Sound Advice Dj’s.

KarlSav: Im looking at the tracklist from your most recent promo mix, you have a pretty varied taste in electronic music, what particularly attracts you to breaks?
Steve (Sound Advice DJs): Quality producers such as Meat Katie, Elite Force and Ils really have drawn us to breaks with some wicked tracks. Even local producers such as Dopamine, Karton and the like are really bringing in the punters. Speaking of the punters, that the other reason why we love breaks, always enjoy playing to a packed dancefloor full of crazy Breaks headz. Sydney crowds are very appreciative and its great that we can play at one of the best breaks nights in Sydney!

KarlSav: Your Sound Advice parties in Sydney have a huge rep, how did that come about?
Steve (Sound Advice DJs): Ye the Sound Advice Parties have gone from strength to strength with some really wild nights including hosting Chris Carter and Poxy Music live. Other than that we also push the local up and coming dj’s. Australia, let alone Sydney has some really talented home grown talent!

KarlSav: What’s the most important advice you can give to people trying to make it in the music scene?
Steve (Sound Advice DJs): Don’t take yourself too seriously and try to remember what it was that got yourself into it in the first place – that is partying, having a  good time with ya mates!

KarlSav: Who are the DJs/Producers doing it for you right now?
Steve (Sound Advice DJs): Right now Hybrid! Elite Force and ILS are my favourite producers at the moment.
Jamesson.

KarlSav: What do you make of the breaks scene in Sydney? How is it developing?
Steve (Sound Advice DJs): It had a bit of a lull recently with the emergence of Electro House but thankfully the Chinese Laundry has been doing well for a while now with both rooms of the club packed. The Chinese Laundry itself has more funky, party hip hop flavoured breaks whilst the Cave houses the darker, techier sounds with no holds barred! Something for everyone really.

KarlSav: So it’s your 1st time playing in Perth….what have you heard about the scene here? what are you expecting?
Steve (Sound Advice DJs): We’ve heard nothing but good stuff about the Perth scene. In fact we’re a bit jealous of how healthy your breaks scene is. We’ve heard big things about Destination too from our fellow Break Inn Resident Dopamine! Really excited to be playing at one of Perth’s premier breaks night’s.

KarlSav: What sort of sound are you both pushing at the moment. What can we expect when you guys come to play at Destination?
Steve (Sound Advice DJs): Quite a versatile sound actually, we love our techy breaks but also love to play more progressive breaks, tech house, techno and even some drum and bass. We like to play a set that infuses lots of different genres while not going from extreme to extreme. Expect something special for Perth!
