Will White Interview

By Pete from Signal Drivers

Will White is one half of Propellerheads, a duo described as the Pioneers of post-Chemical Brothers Big Beat. Whilst the next Propellerheads album is on the horizon, he’s been busy going solo especially with a large remix schedule this year. He’ll be touching down in Australia soon to deliver those beats for which he’s become famous. Pete from Signal Drivers gets on the phone to find out more.

So you’re touring Australia shortly, what’s involved in the tour?
This will be a two week tour, originally I wanted 3 weeks, but with everything going on back here I’m going to have to get back here as soon as possible. I’m going to fit as much as I can in those 2 weeks which is a bit of a shame because it’s such a lovely country and I do enjoy it every time I come down there.

Is it the kind of thing where a white English guy is coming down for a 2 week suntan?
Believe! Over here the frost is kicking in. The sun is still out but it’s cold!

You’re doing a lot of solo work at the moment, do you miss the Propellerheads project?
It got to a point for both of us. We toured that album solidly for 5 to 6 years which was great because we got to keep touring so long just on 1 album. For both of us it was great to be given the opportunity to do that, but at the same time we both thought we needed to take a break away from that. When Alex had the offer of a few different production jobs in New York and he went over there, he loved it so much he decided to set up shop there. With the standard of musicians so high there he’s getting to write music with a lot of great musicians. I’m optimistic that in 2007 we’ll both have time to knuckle down for a 2nd album.

I’ve been caning a remix of yours recently, Jawa  It’s On (Will White Remix)
Yeah that was a lot of fun. A bit of a mix between breaks and electro.

So you’ve been in the scene a while now. What would you be describing as your sound of now?
Well I’ve found over the last 2 years, especially with doing a lot of DJ gigs in places like Italy, Holland and other places where people are really into there breakbeats, I’ve seen Electro House really kick off. So now I’ve been fusing a lot of electro crossed with breaks crossed with house. So I don’t really want to pigeon hole myself and there is so many different styles out there that are really doing it for me at the moment. With my DJ sets they’re mainly electro breaks, electro house mainly.

So for the people who are coming to see you, what can we expect?
You can expect a rocking time! I’m doing a lot of shows with some really talented people and I can’t wait to check them out too.

Will White will be performing at the Renaissance Summer Picnic on November 26th. For more information checkout Teknoscape's events guide
