Dave Seaman Interview

A living legend and a master at longer club sets, the first time he has played a smaller, longer set in Perth.

Its been 2 years since last time you have been here, what have you been up to since then?
I suppose the main difference in my life is I've got married and had 2 little boys.  In fact I seem to remember the last time I was there I had just got engaged two days previous so obviously you can imagine things have changed somewhat at my house.  Sleepless nights have taken on a new meaning.  Instead of having no sleep at the weekends I actually seem to get more sleep when I go away these days!
Apart from that it's been mix CD's and work in the studio.

How you feel about the whole underground verses commercial?
I don't tend to worry about it too much!! But seriously if a record is got it doesn't matter.  What is the definition of that anyway? Commercial means it's sold more copies that an underground one? Is Picasso more commercial because he's better know than Klimt.  It's all subjective.

Is it important for you to educate your crowd?
It's important to open people's ears and minds to new things that normally they wouldn't be exposed to but not at the expense of the night becoming like lesson.  Entertainment is still the single most important reason for DJing.

You've inspired so many people, who are your inspirations?
My first inspiration was Dave Lorimer who used to run the Pink Gin Mobile Disco at our youth club in Leeds. I blame him - it's all his fault.

Vinyl or Digital?
Digital I'm afraid.  I never thought I would hear myself say it but vinyl is a bit like VHS to me these days. Stored away gathering dust in my garage.

During your career you have seen different generations of clubbers. Today when you go out playing you might see the older generation as well as the young one coming to support you, what are your thoughts when you play in front of them?
I don't tend to think of it like that.  I don't distinguish between ages or discriminate. ..  It doesn't matter to me if someone is 40 or 14 if their attitude is right and they want to enjoy the experience. It's all the same to me.

What are you reading at the moment?
At the moment I am reading 'A Million Little Pieces' by James Fray.

What's a place you always tell your friends to go and check out?
In terms of a destination, for spirituality, Petra in Jordan.  For the sheer hustle and bustle of a big city, Tokyo and for a relaxing place to spend a large amount of time Melbourne. But if you are talking about events then De La Guarda, or in terms of restaurants The Fat Duck in Bray or in terms of football games  Leeds United...only joking.

You're a very busy man-where do you call home?
I live in Newark near Nottingham in England.  Robin Hood country.

Where do you love playing the most? (Crowd/venue/country)
Crowd wise Romania takes some beating.
The Venue  is such a difficult one to choose -there are so many from Cavo Paradiso in Mykonos overlooking the Agean see to the Wang beach club in Brazil overlooking the South Atlantic to Pacha on the beautiful island of Ibiza.  And those are just three of the top of my head. But for sheer beauty I don't think you ca beat Zouk in Singapore.  If Gaudi had designed  a nightclub Zouk would be it.
Country wise it has to be  Japan I just love visiting the place.  Tokyo gives you such a buzz and makes me feel so creative you can never wait to get back.

What's your favourite tune right now?
That's always a tough one - new chemical brothers is great as is Pete Hellers mix of Music Matters by Faithless but I 'd have to say Mogwai 'Robot Soul' is taking the prize this week.

Is there a tune or musician you would love to rework/work with?
Not especially I've been very lucky to work with lots of amazing artists and amazing music over the years. So there's no one thing that stands out as having eluded me but I'm always open to new ideas so we'll jut have to wait and see.
