Fort Knox Five and Kraak & Smaak Interview

Fort Knox Five and Kraak & Smaak drop in for some chatting,

What are you expecting to see at this year's Good Vibrations Festival?
FK5: We are very excited about 2007 Good Vibes Festival. The line-up is nothing short of spectacular. It is (without a doubt) the best line-up we have ever been featured on. To perform at a festival with the Beastie Boys and Jurassic 5 would have been a dream for us. Jam has made that dream a reality. We are really stoked to see several of the artists on this tour. We are very excited to see the Beastie Boys and Jurassic 5. They are two of our favorite groups. We really want to see Kraak & Smaak, Cut Copy, Rahzel and JS-1, London Electricity, DJ Dan, and everyone else.

K&S: It reminds us of the summer festivals that focus on dance music we have here around Europe as well and with Australia's summers in mind it must be a really perfect atmosphere. Hopefully we will be able to have a look at the Beastie Boys, Cassius and Nightmares on Wax too

Favorite festival experience?
FK5: Our favorite festival experience so far has to be SHAMBHALA MUSIC FESTIVAL in Salmo, BC. It is basically the Canadian Burning Man. The party is more geared towards Djs. They really love all types of music, and keep a very open mind when it comes to Djs. You can drop funk, breaks, hip hop, classics, drum & bass, reggae, whatever, and they wil get down. The Canadian music scene is very similar to Oz. They are some amazing djs and producers. The punters love getting down. One of the reasons Oz and Canada are our favorite places to play is because of their similarities and GOOD VIBES!

K&S: A recent experience was that this year we played with our live band at the Sziget festival in Budapest, Hungary and watched Iggy and the Stooges beforehand. Absolutely fabulous as they were long time heroes of ours and really made us kick ass when we played ourselves. Next time we'll try and invite Iggy on stage.

Strangest thing you've seen/done at a Festival?
FK5: What happens at the festival… stays at the festival….

K&S: An autograph session we did after playing this year's Dutch Pinkpop festival: writing on napkins, plastic cups, bags, t-shirts, arms, you name it!

What can we expect from your set at GVF this year?
FK5: We have been busy at Fort Knox preparing some golden grooves for this Good Vibes. We have plenty of exclusive bootlegs action, and many FK remixes to test for the first time. We are working on making the majority of our set exclusive stuff. Expect a journey through music. We are going to try and play a little bit of everything. Some hip hop, reggae, drum & bass, breaks, funk, soul, and more.

K&S: Expect a dj set that is tough, funky and sweats like hell, with breakbeat as the absolute basis.

Anything particular you're looking forward to seeing/doing in Australia?
FK5: We have been lucky enough to tour Australia on a somewhat regular basis. We have been able to do quite a lot of exploring over the last couple of years. We look forward to having our annual poker tournament at THE RECORDSTORE in Sydney. We are also stoked about hanging with good friends who are flying over from the states, reconnecting with our Oz homies, and seeing a good friend's newborn child. That will be very nice.

K&S: Last time we came over we didn't see any kangaroos. I guess that's a must see for this year….

What are some exciting tracks/artists you're listening to at the moment?
FK5: There is some killer music coming out these days. Tons of crazy mash-ups, and mad funky beats. Some artists that we are really into right now are Wicked Lester, Smalltown Djs, Mat the Alien, Wax Romeo & Neighbor all from from Canada. Like we said, they are some funky people! Of course we are really diggin' our DC funk brothers, the All Good Funk Alliance and Kid Gusto. Ursula 1000 is always on point. Some catz to watch for are the QDup Foundation. We really love what Ali B, Krafty Kuts, A Skillz are doing. Bumping breaks and funky beats! The Stantons and Deekline are making some nasty booty bangers! Love it!!! The Nextmen and Fat Freddy's Drop are really killing it right now. On the D&B tip, we are totally rocking the Benny Page bits. On the 4/4 tip, we are loving Switch and Sinden. There stuff is making us love that style again.

K&S: Henrik Schwarz's DJ Kicks mix album and the remix he made for us and will be released soon (No Sun in the Sky), Madlib's Beat Konducta series, Burial (dubstep on Hyperdub label). Australian stuff on the Knowfoowl Music label, DJ Regal, Fdel on Freestyle Records, etc. We are also putting a cd album together with all the remixes we made up until now, should be out around February, aptly and funnily (well ehh… at least we think so!) called the 'K&S Sessions'… Ha!

What do you get up to when you're not making music?
FK5: It seems these days, all we do is make music, run the label, dj, and travel. It is really hard to find free time these days. We love what we do, and basically engulf ourselves in the biz. It is a lifestyle, but we love it. It is great to dj. It feeds our travel bug. When not djing but on the road, that is the best time. We can just explore, and see other cultures.

K&S: Buying music and listening to music! We're always digging for new stuff, samples, styles, etc. And working in our own record shop in Leiden (Velvet Music) as well ; -)
