Anthony Pappa Interview
Anthony Pappa earned his stripes in the industry, having done CDs for the likes of Stress and as the debut DJ on Global Underground's Nu Breed series. He’s also a versatile producer, working with the likes of Barry Gilbey (as Pappa and Gilbey) and with Alan Bremner (as Freefall), as well as collectively working with both as 3 Monkeys, and creating productions that find their way into the boxes of many top jocks. For the first time in Perth he takes control of an intimate room for one of his trademark long sets.
Being originally from Melbourne, how often do you get to travel back to Australia? I try to get back at least once a year.
Do you ever get the urge to return here to make it your base? Yes l do but when l do return back to Oz it will not be to make it my base as a DJ. It will be to make it my home again and to do whatever l decide to do when that time comes. If you want to be an international DJ and travel the world on a weekly basis living in Australia geographically does not make sense.
You have been on the international DJ circuit for close to 10 years now; do you ever get sick of the travel? Yes sometimes. I love my job and enjoy the gigs but travelling can wear you down and become tiring. Saying that l still would not have it any other way as l love to play to crowds all over the world.
For some of the young wannabe DJ's out there what do you see as the main benefits and pitfalls of the lifestyle? Well it’s great to be able to travel and see the world through Djing and to be able to meet different and interesting people each week. The down side to this is being constantly on the road and away from home makes it very difficult to maintain any normal lifestyle for family, friends, girlfriends etc…
What can we expect to hear from you production wise over the coming year? I am working on some new material with various people and producing some new tracks of mine that will feature on a new mix cd that l will release some time next year.
You have been a DJ who has always crossed genres in terms of style; do you think at present a broader musical policy is the trend in DJ sets? Yes absolutely. Its great that it is this way because too much of the same thing whatever it may be will eventually get boring.
Can we get a current Top 10 tunes from you? Here are some tracks that are big for me at the moment. In no particular order:
Unknown – “Ribcage” Stephan Bodzin – “RoterZwerg” Original Mix Crab People – “Taste Like Crab” Original Mix Jurgen Paape – “Nord” Original Mix Jussi Pekka – “Piupau” Anton Fielding & Tiny Sticks – “Pow Wow” Stefano Salsi – “Some Candies For Me” Slam – “We’re Not Here” Unkle – “Burn My Shadow” Agoria Mix Proper Villians – “Hole In The Soul”
Over the past 10 years you would have some musical trends come and go, what would you say are the most enduring impacts on you production wise and inspiration wise as a DJ? It would have to be good drums and a good bassline in a track. If you get these two ingredients right then you are rocking.
