Spring into Sao Paulo at So-Co Cargo

By James Broadhurst

When the sun goes down on Friday November 30 So-Co Cargo will be transformed into a party paradise for Spring in Sao Paulo, a musical tribute to the tribal rhythms and sultry grooves of South America.

RTR FM in conjunction with So-Co Cargo and the Alphabet City Artrage festival will be bringing the sounds, sights and possibly smells of Sao Paulo to the people of Perth for a night full of sun soaked booty shaking beats and basslines.

The event has moved away from a traditional club venue for this years celebration of all things Brazilian into Perth’s cultural melting pot and Dave Cutbush, RTRFM’s event manager, says the venue change will work on a number of different levels.

“It is an interesting thing this year because we are doing it as part of So-Co cargo and the Alphabet City Artrage festival and it’s nice to be taking this show inside the sea containers in Northbridge. We’ve had it in clubs in previous years and this is really going to take it to Northbridge in a different style.”

RTRFM is about to go all Samba style on your ass for one night to pay homage to the influences and musical legacies originating from the Brazilian capital. With DJing appearances from Nik K, Tom Foss, Ben Taffee, Dart and Sardi to name but a few there will be a tempo and style to suit even the most discerning consumer of Brazilian beats.

The Brazilian sounds and styles travel a long way from home and Dave Cutbush says many of the presenters from various RTRFM shows have developed a taste for the swinging beats and Latin vibes in modern Brazilian music and they deserved to have an opportunity to showcase their multicultural sides.

“There’s a lot of presenters here at the station who are really into all of this Brazilian music, but not necessarily the samba sort of style. They might be into house music, drum and bass or whatever and we can feel the influence of them in a lot of different ways and the presenters at the station, regardless of what music they are into, have been influenced by Brazilian artists and we like to represent a lot of that.”

He also says many of the DJs have been preparing feverishly for this event in order to bring you the perfect cocktail of party favourites shaken, not stirred, with nu skool Brazilian beats from artists like DJ Marky and plenty more.

On the live music front, Sambalicious will be bringing their party inspired percussion beats and authentic brand of traditional Samba music to the party to get your hips moving for all the right reasons.

So what can you expect from Spring in Sao Paulo? Well for one you can expect a little something from RTRFM if you are one of their loyal subscribers, but the rest of us can expect a good night out with no strings attached.

“We’re also doing something different this year,” says Dave, “and letting all of our subscribers in for free as a bit of a thank you to all those who subscribe to the station. It’s a good night to come down and have a dance. It’s nothing too complex or crazy it’s just a really good, cool night to have a boogie and chill out in Northbridge.”

Regardless of your musical taste and persuasion you can rest easy knowing this is going to be a culture clash of the best kind and if your ears have ever been distracted by a swinging Latin groove this will be well worth checking out.
