
RTRFM's Seriously Sound System
RTRFM invade the leafy & luscious surrounds of Hyde Park again for a styled vibe on a December’s Day.
For the fourth time, RTRFM takeover the beautiful Hyde Park in North Perth for Seriously Sound System. This year the festival will again showcase a stack of great local DJs and live acts for your dancing pleasure.
Head down from Midday until 10pm on Saturday December 22 for some sublime underground sounds in one of the best settings in Perth.
Here is the fine display of talent for 2007:
Chameleon Brass Band The only large piece band in Perth Western Australia that can play on any street corner, no PA, no Stage, anytime! Developed and modeled on the New Orleans re-birth of Jazz mixed with Funk and Hip Hop this band includes some of Perths top jazz/funk horns. The Chameleon Brass Band is the brainchild of Manager Ken Allen and has been funking up the Perth festival scene since 1999. Music you can bump n grind to, CBB incorporates 2nd line drum rhythms with Funk Horn lines and All-in vocals. Nothing can beat the sound of the Big Boss Brass Bass – and who needs electricity?!!
Dan The Man Dan the Man has hosted RTRFM’s dance music program Full Frequency since 1994. Specialising in heavy funk, 60s garage rock, underground hip-hop and everything in between. When Dan’s not busy laying down the freshest beats over the airwaves, he’s running his own recording studio Cardboard City, DJing in Perth’s most underground clubs, and hosting the popular Fat Fluid parties.
Grace Barbe and Band Grace Barbe is a Seychellois singer/songwriter, whose music reflects and celebrates the diverse cultural influences of her Indian Ocean heritage (African, Indian, Asian and European). Reggae, dub, funk and soul also have a strong influence on her sound, creating a mixing pot of danceable styles. A winner of the 2006 WAMI ‘Song of the Year’ award (world and folk category), Grace writes and sings in three languages; English, Kreol and French, with the ability to also play bass or six string guitar and the melodica. A songwriter with an exceptional melodic gift, Grace’s poignant lyrics talk about culture, world issues and life. Grace and her band are currently in the studio recording her album, which is due to be released in 2008.
Jah Wisdom Sound System Jah Wisdom Sound System was formed in the late eighties by Australian reggae DJ General Justice and plays reggae music in a conscious style. Jah Wisdom can be heard on the radio every week on Jamdown Vershun on RTRFM. General Justice is well know to reggae fans around Australia, not only for his radio show, but he also produced the award winning Documentary “World of Reggae Music” with The Chemist, clashed with Barry G on JBC and was the first Australian to have a number one hit single in Jamaica with “Dangerous Times”. Jah Wisdom Sound System now features Jah Clint, Treesha Wisdom, Viva and Miss Tickle and continues to bring the music to the people in a conscious style.
James A James A has been DJing around Perth, interstate and overseas for over a decade – taking his only love of house music to parties near and far. James was one of the instigators of the Deep City movement that redefined underground house music in Perth at the beginning of the millennium. He has played alongside some of the giants of the genre including Derrick Carter, Masters at Work, Alton Miller, Derrick May and many many more. James has had a long association with RTRFM having hosted Full Frequency for over 5 years after learning the ropes on programs such as Powerjam. His fruity house styles will get the crowd moving at this year’s Seriously Sound System.
Mason Mason is an avid record collector. His search for soul, funk, jazz and hip hop vinyl has taken him all over the world – including a recent wax finding mission in Brazil. Mason is also one half of Paper Plane Project – an outfit that is about to put out a 12” featuring a track made with Crown City Rockers from Oakland California. When he is not jetsetting and making beats you can find Mason on RTRFM’s dedicated hip hop program, All City.
Micah One of precious few DJs who prefers to let the music do the talking, Micah’s humble approach, and endless amount of energy behind the decks has proved popular with the Perth dance music community, establishing him as one of the city’s and indeed the country’s leading DJs. Voted best breaks DJ at the 2003, 2004, 2005, ranked 1st for WA and 22nd nationwide in the inthemix top 50 DJ poll 2007. Not only has he proved more than capable of organising his own events, Micah’s energy and skill as a DJ has allowed him to become a permanent fixture on festival line ups and won him a plethora of all-star support slots. Aside from playing gigs Micah also hosts Monday Full Frequency with Ben Mac on RTRFM.
Muller Muller is a stalwart of the Perth Drum n Bass scene having been a resident of such DnB institutions as The Drum Club and The Nine. Muller is also the head honcho of RTRFM’s Saturday night Drum n Bass show Breakout. Check him out as he rips it up at Seriously Sound System 2007 alongside Shock One.
Naik vs Kit Pop Formed this year Naik vs Kit Pop will provide a live beat driven performance with influences ranging from post rock to hip hop and beyond. Naik has been performing in bands for over a decade and brings this experience to this live act. Whilst Kit Pop, owns his own record label Paperchain, which is about to explode onto world music scene. Featuring live drumming, guitars and a mountain of looped up whizbangery Naik vs Kit Pop should prove to be one of the highlights of Seriously Sound System 2007.
Rok Riley Rok Riley is Perth’s dancing DJ. Alongside longtime partner in crime Dan the Man, Riley hosts the very popular Friday Full Frequency program. Rok Riley plays at a host of bars and clubs around Perth and you know when she is on the decks that the party is definitely on.
Diger Rokwell Diger Rokwell is an artist and producer with a taste for sampology and global understanding. He explores and creates visual works with paste ups, electronic mediums and canvas. Diger strives to gain the audience attention through decontextualisation and conscious living thematics and as a musician he chooses to sample all types of music to create his version of hip hop. A keen digger of samples and sounds for ten years, diger has a wide array of approaches, sounds and ideas and is a member of The Community, a collective delivering freshness to the Perth massive at various events and happenings. Diger Rokwell is also a host of the new oz hip hop agenda Down Underground on RTRFM.
Shock One Coming from a traditionally trained musical background Shockone bring a unique sound to the drum and bass music scene. Discovering the sound through artists like Bad Company, Konflict and Ed Rush & Optical, it wasn’t long before Karl Thomas and Jay Burns, at the time playing in a metal band with members of Pendulum, were experimenting in the electronic music. Shockone has proven to be a force to be reckoned with, not only in the studio, but also on stage, always retaining a strong musical element in sets while still keeping the energy at maximum level. Shockone will play alongside Muller at Seriously Sound System.
Underground Sound Solution System Underground Sound Solution System is Perth’s newest sound system playing the world’s newest electronic and dance music. On four decks and assorted bits and pieces Special K, Ben Taaffe, Hax0rw4ng, Dave Miller, The Elliotts and the Dr.J spin mind-boggling music and mash-up styles from the forefront of underground dance music scenes – expect to hear large doses of dubstep, broken beats, jazz, madness, electronica, afro-beat, hip hop, house music. electronic interference, and unnameable styles! You can catch their sounds on Saturday nights on Underground Solution or in Hyde Park on Saturday December 22.
And on top of that monster line up, you can come along and sit on the beautiful grassed banks and have a beverage or two with all the RTR crew in the lead up to the pointy end of the festive season. Bring a picnic, some sunscreen and a blanket but please no BYO as this is a licensed event.
