The Swedish House Mafia
Danielle Marsland speaks with Sebastian Ingrosso as he gears up for a tag teaming set with Steve Angello ahead of their main stage slot at the FUTURE MUSIC FESTIVAL, this coming Labour Day Long Weekend (Sunday March 1).
Nursing a hangover in bed on a Thursday morning, Stockholm DJ Sebastian Ingrosso is barely audible as he speaks down the line, obviously feeling worse for wear after the previous night’s proceedings, wherein he took on the town with Italian DJ’s The Bloody Beetroots, and California’s Steve Aoki. “I went out with all the boys…it was a big night,” yawns out Ingrosso, straining slightly.
Anyone who’s seen Ingrosso’s live show knows that this is one guy who takes the business of partying seriously. A typical night in Ingrosso’s company might involve anything from hanging from the rafters, swigging champagne, to dancing with a string of beautiful ladies behind the decks. Digging a little deeper into Ingrosso’s mindset reveals this as somewhat of a philosophy for the hugely successful DJ, as he shares: "For me, when I go out and party, or play at parties, I usually play for 2 hours, maybe 2-4 hours. And I wanna make it like every night is New Years Eve, I wanna make a big party, I wanna make people scream, I wanna make people jump from balconies. You know? That's what I wanna do!”
Luckily, Ingrosso’s also got a softer side, which is at its most prominent around his family: “The first thing I do whenever I get back from a big tour is go to my Mum’s for dinner,” says Ingrosso, who grew up in Stockholm, a city he describes as “cold, safe and very clean”. Likewise, when Ingrosso’s with his closest buddies - Axwell and Steve Angello - whom together with Ingrosso (and previously another close mate, Eric Prydz) form the all-star DJ supergroup The Swedish House Mafia, things couldn’t be better, as Ingrosso shares: “I have so much big respect for those guys, they’re basically like my brothers. At the moment we’re living in different places, so we don’t see each other as much as we used to. But whenever we’re playing together we’re always so happy to see each other”. The Swedish House Mafia was born on a cold Stockholm night, as the four old friends warmed up over coffee, and made plans to combine their love and talent for DJing in the funnest way possible. Ingrosso suggests it’s been a ball: “It’s so much fun to play with your best friends, and the crowd love it because there’s like three of us up there, so it’s like a big show for them. It’s always really cool.”
For the last year or so the buddies have been concentrating on their solo pursuits, for Ingrosso, this has been working on his new release coming out on his music label, Refune, in March, as well as preparing for an upcoming world tour, that will take him everywhere from Chile to Moscow. Of course, not to forget the fact Ingrosso also plans to pop in on Australia, playing us fresh material from his new album at the Future Music Festivals in March (Labour Day Long Weekend, Sunday March 1 in Perth), a trip which Ingrosso can’t hide his enthusiasm for: “I love Australia. It’s my favourite place on the Planet Earth. The people are so nice, the weather, the nature, the food, the girls, everything!” Although, when the jetsetter is asked what city is the next big thing in terms of the dance scene, Ingrosso reckons it’s Croatia, and not Australia, that takes the cake. Says Ingrosso: “Ever since the new laws in Ibiza that require clubs to close at 6am, heaps of DJs are planning their summers in Croatia, so they can party 24/7…” Sounds right up Ingrosso’s alley!
