Mistabishi Interview

mistaFinding himself crunched out of London's trading industry early in 2008, Mistabishi a.k.a Jamie Pullen, embarked on a journey of musical self discovery. His exclusive contract with Hopsital Records saw him release a string of unique singles, each receiving support on UK's BBC Radio 1, as well as finding respect amongst the electronic music community.  Liz Sheehan checked in with the cheeky Mistabishi recently...

What's your favourite movie soundtrack?
My favourite original score would prolly be "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind". That looping guitar track is really lush and works so well.

You've just released your debut album "Drop" with label - Hospital Records. Congratulations! Tell us about the album?
It's made of plastics, poly vinyl acetate, ink, and paper, and one's and zero's .

What gave you the idea to use broken office equipment to build some of your tracks?
I worked in an office, and our company went broke.

I read the honest, yet sometimes hilarious comments you wrote on your website - mistabishi.co.uk - about the tracks on “Drop”. Tell us more about the website?
It's programmed in a language called "Dribble". If that isn't fitting for the kind of content I put into that thing I don't know what is.

What attracted you to playing Drum and Bass?
I just grew up with it. If I'd grown up in Detroit I'd be playing techno, if I grew up in Nashville I'd be playing country... probably! I'm very much a product of my environment.

You also play some Dubstep, how do you find the response to this relatively new genre?
Europeans just don't get it. They seem to want everything very regimented. They can barely deal with anything that isn't two-step and of the same niche sub genre to be honest. Although that said, they do party very hard! America seems to love dubstep. California especially. The hippy community really dig it. Canada too. Anywhere with a very strong alternative culture seem to embrace it. No idea about down under yet... I'll have to conduct some experiments I think...

You seem to have worked your way quickly to the forefront of the DnB community in the UK. What has been your most defining moment?
I'm not even sure there is a community to be honest. I certainly haven't felt part of one. I think I've just made a string of tracks that people liked. The defining moment was probably my release on Virus a few years a go. Everyone seemed to play that and it attracted the attention of the big dogs.

Who have you met that has made you speechless and why?
I met this actress called Patsy Kensit once, in Leeds. I just dried up. To me she is the most beautiful women ever and she looks stunning in real life. I probably said something like "you're a famous, I love you, oh sorry I'm not supposed to say that am I?" and she smiled and winked and it felt like a million stomach ulcers exploding in belly at once.

You have already had some great successes, what are your plans for the rest of the year?
Musically speaking, just keep trying to make different stuff. I really don't want to be pinned down to just one thing because I'll get bored. I get bored very quickly. Too much sunny delight as a kid or something. So I really don't want this to becoming boring because I see it as good thing for me to be doing. I've met guys that are obviously bored with this and I don't want to become like them.

What do you have in store for us Aussies when you play at Heavyweight Soundz in April?
Variety. It's what i'm trying to push to people. sometimes going from one extreme to the other, but finding a way for it to make sense, and not completely over-cook the whole thing with too many silly willy-waving tricks, or by playing the same kind of record again and again.

This is your first trip to Australia as a performing artist. What are you most excited about?
The sun. I don't think I've seen it for about 6 months. Also seeing some family and friends over here, but really, I just wanna see how you guys party!
