BLOC Festival Preview

Posted by: admin  |  Date:  22 June, 2012  |  Tags:   |  2 Comments

While London is in the throes of Royal Jubilee and Olympic fever, something else on a gargantuan scale is happening and it’s not the Opening Ceremony. Bloc 2012, scheduled for the 6th-7th July, is shaping up to be one of the biggest weekends on the UK music festival circuit and features some of the world heavyweights of techno, hip hop, house and forward thinking bass music.

Iconic British electronica duo Orbital is headlining, along with techno stalwarts Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills and Ricardo Villalobos. Hip hop fans will not be disappointed with the inclusion of DOOM and the irrepressible Snoop Dogg. Representation from the bass music side comes from the likes of Flying Lotus, Joker, Digital Mystikz and James Blake, along a whole host of artists making waves in the underground scene. Another highlight promises to be Amon Tobin’s ISAM, undisputedly one of the most spectacular live audio-visual shows currently touring.

Now in its sixth year, Bloc has changed venues to reflect it’s expanding following while still keeping true to its underground electronic music roots. Set on the water’s edge at Victoria Docks in London Pleasure Gardens amongst abandoned industrial buildings, Bloc 2012 has promised to deliver the musical goods with showcases hosted by Resident Advisor, Hyperdub, Boiler Room and other leading brands. A first for the festival is the inclusion of the MS Stubnitz, an industrial deep-sea fishing vessel converted into a floating performance space and dance-floor that will be mooring at Victoria Docks exclusively for Bloc. This unique concept, along with cutting edge audio-visual technology and art installations promise mind-blowing experiences for all who venture through the gates.

So if you‘re one of the many making a trip across to the Motherland this summer, a visit to Bloc is highly recommended for anyone looking for a dance music festival with a twist. Check out the videos for a sneak peek of what’s to come!

such a shame…i went to london just for bloc, but only got a few hours of badly managed fun. don’t remember a lineup as good as that one promised to be…

Great shame indeed. I think I managed to get in just before the 3hr queue started and got to check out Stubnitz but after about 10pm it was pretty impossible to get in anywhere without queuing/talking your way through with media access. The stage managers acted like everything was normal in the Carhartt Dome when I asked if Joker was still coming on (this was about 10mins after midnight when he was due to play) and then I only found out the whole thing was shut down when I asked a cop what the f was going on :(
      Amon Tobin was sick though.
