View Full Version : Experimental Drum N Bass
Howdy people...
I've had a bit of discussion with friends about this topic... And can somebody who knows what they're talking about give me some artist/tracks that would be categorized as experimental drumnbass??
Some examples I've been told are along the lines of:
Andy C/Shimon - Body Rock
Bad Company - Dogs On The Moon
I dunno how far off i am... but i've also been told that neither of these are experimental!!
help? http://www.teknoscape.com.au/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif
try Squarepushers first album "feed me weird things"
thats the only thing that springs to mind
i wouldn't mind learning about some more artists in this genre myself.
True... Although I can't say I have much of an idea of the 'experimental' genre... Early squarepusher is something that stands out http://www.teknoscape.com.au/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
You see him when he came in july/august this year?

I'd hardly class Bodyrock or anything Bad Co have made as experimental.
As ZD said, try Squarepusher, Aphex, Panacea, Problem Child, Sense (Guy from Melbounre), and any of the other artist on Warp Records.
Oh if you can find anything by Single Cell Orchestra check that out too.

Squarepusher is probably one of the only DnB artists who has REALLY pushed the barriers in terms of being "experimental", his gig earlier this year was honestly one of the best gigs of 2001 for me, it kicks serious ass!
I wouldn't personally classify SQP as being D'n'B, not sure if he would appreciate his music being classified as such either either...
Single Cell Orchestra being classified as D'n'B would be new to me too.. http://www.teknoscape.com.au/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

It uses percussion drum instruments, it uses deep groaning basslines, it's not rocket-science...
I guess it fits more into Drill'n'Bass than Drum and bass, however...

Yeah I know what you're saying about SCO, but I have 3 tunes of theirs on vinyl that I'd glass as dnb. Really fucking haunting dnb.
I played one at like 6am NYE last year and it broke everyones head heheheheheh http://www.teknoscape.com.au/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
hahahahah nice one...
cheers for the help people, that's cleared shit up in my mind anyway - next time someone tries explaining to me that body rock is experimental i can act all knowledgable-like
and browny... im with you on that 1hr of ambient noise... that shit sounded like elevator music on crack. but i spose its what they call a 'build-up' - either that or the previous DJ didnt show up for his shift.

photek has put out some interesting experimental stuff. technically i wouldnt even think that bodyrock is strictly speaking drum'nbass as it has not got a breakbeat which is one of the things that define it- no doubt this will cause an argument but hey

its sad any new dnb sounds or if a producer dose something slightly different from the usual *insert any track from that killabite 2 cd* dnb out there its "experimental"

It's all subjective. For some, artists like Polar, Chris J, ASC <insert any producer not doing stuff that's "the norm"> are simply considered good producers, while for others, they're experimental. Body Rock is experimental in it's own right, but just for different reasons (despite the Stolen Documents remix being the first real swingbeat track - respek the one like Polar). http://www.teknoscape.com.au/forums/images/smilies/images/smilies/smile.gif

classifications are fucked
but id believe squarepusher and aphex twin would be experimental period.
doesnt classifying a type of experimentation take away the experiment?
'yeah i produce experimental handbag house, we really are pushing the boundries for vocals about shaise'

i'm just curious why you don't consider that swing beat a breakbeat Al?
it's got a syncopated beat which I generally consider to be breakbeat
lots of people don't think much drum n bass at all nowdays has a breakbeat, in comparison to 95/96 the beats used today aren't very 'broken' but i still consider them breakbeat *shrugs* http://www.teknoscape.com.au/forums/images/smilies/images/smilies/confused.gif
shed some light please Al!

I'd say SKC, Chris Su and the rest of those estonian goat herders are pushing the experimental stuff.
I really dont think its the way a break is programmed to class something as experimental (i.e. - bodyrock) i think it has to do with the sounds/samples used in an overall tune, an overall feel to a song, that is experimental.
swingbeat is still a breakbeat.

SCO is fucking amazing to say the least. What tunes do you have on vinyl Paul? I would have never classed SCO as d&b so im curious as to what other shit there is out there that sounds similar
if you want a good free experimental artist try Edgey (http://www.mp3.com/edgey)
its all crazy assed breakcore and some really good dark atmospheric stuff.
