I don't really understand what this trip hop shite is, seeing as there's a different concept of it all over the place. The americans seem to use it for slowish breakbeat type stuff, whereas other times, it's used for non-conformist alternative electronica with less generic element.

Anyone care to define?

All mentioned stuff is good sometimes.

i spose the best definition i could give is downtempo electronic music- Mostly instrumental, with jazzy horn breaks, off-kilter beats and occasional soft raps. lotsa trippy samples are often used too. i dunno it kinda confuses me too. from listening to lots of different triphop artists thats what they all seem to have in common.
just think of downtempo trippy hiphop or something
hehe

yeah maxinquaye is a gret album.

for me it's shadow, tricky and portishead. no suprises there. . although cinematic orchestra do produce a type of jazz/new jazz fused trip hop which you could throw loosley into the trip hop basket.

I would say that "some" of australia's own Wicked Beat Sound Systems music can be categorized as trip hop. I like them a lot.

I understand well, i know 80% of that list. I'm just saying that beyond a loose bullshit 'trip hop' definition, this music doesn't really have that much in common. House - is obvious, Drum n Bass is obvious, trip hop is bullshit. Down tempo, jazzy melodic deep electronica with some trippy influenced samples and vocals

Whatever, it just sounds like bullshit. When i first heard morcheeba being called trip hop, i didn't get it. Air being called trip hop ! Even chrystal method, i've heard being called trip hop. At least with house, it's all 4/4. dnb 8, trance- melodic synth ladel string influenced sounds, but trip hop has seemingly come to refer to that 'too hard basket' of electronica which doesn't neatly fit into other genres.

I'm sure it's real, but which of it is? :bungeye:

Bjork being trip hop !! :look:
Kosheen!

Too hard basket = trip hop

I think it was a trendy term once.

HI8US
28-07-2004, 05:08 AM
it was definately a media generated term ! ... trip hop, big beat, electroclash, nu-jazz etc

i think also trip hop became very diluted towards the end as big beat came in

for me its hip hop with a more atmospheric feel ?

Most genre names are developed by media so they can put it somewhere on the internet or in a magazine or on a record store shelf etc...

Good music is always moving beyond the categories.

Definitely a one time trendy term...

tortoise
tricky
bang gang
goldfrapp
ming
smoke city

p.s. lamb have a new 'best of' album out which covers i think 1993 - 2004. i recommend it for people who like lamb, but arent die hard fans. it will give you their best collection of work (apart from the fact that sweet isnt on it)

oh and jhorsehead.. i personally am not that concerned about the 'nitty gritty' of whats defined as triphop where and by whom or wateva. i just enjoy listening to artists that seem to fall under that genre, 'triphop' . maybe it is just a loose term- who knows... maybe everyone uses trip hop to describe different artists.. it seems everyone on here has the same musicians in mind when they hear the word triphop. ive never heard crystal method being described as triphop tho!

Good to see some love for the trip hop :)

Start with the obvious, that being portishead (that which got me into it in the first place)

Also seriously dig:
Sneaker Pimps
Lamb
Lunascape
Puracane
Daughter Darling (absolutely beautiful album "Sweet Shadows" Highly Recommended); and
Airlock

Good stuff!
