View Full Version : Monitor Speakers
i'm going to be investing in some monitor speakers soon for my home studio. just want to know about what other people have bought and their experences with them.
i'm probably going to buy a pair of passive speakers because i can't afford any active ones. i've got a desent amp to run them though as well. i have friend who actually made a set for himself with components from jaycar, his mixes are really good. the cost is going to be a major factor.
anybodies help on this topic would be apprieciated.
thanx, zd

Hi,
Obviously it's always going to be a question of buying the best you can afford but as far as fairly-priced passives go, I'd look at the Alesis Monitor Ones or the Spirit Absolutes. Stay away from the the Event gear if you can.
If you're using passives, remeber to set whatever amp you use at a fixed 'reference' level and don't use the amps volume dial at all. Otherwise your just turning it into a Hi-Fi and your mix levels will be unpredictable.

Just use ya headfones G!! Thats all I ever need. Then just listen to it in ya car. Thats the best place to test ya mixes!! no need for good monitors, just a tape deck in ya car will do the trick, especially in MONO!! Yeah G!!

i think schqpchinczter boiee has a point actually ;)
yood be surprised how decieving your tracks may be sounding lush on you $1000 speakers but sound shit on the everyday stereo's that will be playing them. A classicexample of this is a guy I know that has a $24K set of meridian speakers that are magic for dolby/DTS theatre shit, but sound like crap when you play drum and bass through them.
This guy wants reference speakers for beatmixing? Correct me if i'm wrong but the records you're mixing have already been mastered (for tone) all you should really have to do is pre-arrange each record for the levels which any half decent amp with a Vu meter can show you the reading of (not dB, a Vu meter) for which a pair of $2 red dot headphones would suffice.

Surely is ... the hometheatre phr34k that he is!
gotta admit tho they're fuckn nice speakers ;) all active, with individual mono blocks (internal in the speaker) to each driver 450W a piece, lifetime guarantee you can't blow them up.
No cables ... oh no, their digital - you run fibre optical signal to them. And their firmware downloadable.
Ah meridian.....

On a serious note, you should not be using just one apir of reference monitors in your studio. You should also have a pair of monitors that will give you a good indiv=cation of what the majority of your audience will be hearing the music through. If its commercially viable music, the car setero is the go, also a real domestic hi-fi setup, and even possibly a mono/stereo standard TV, cos heaps of people watch video hits. On the other hand, if you make club music, it would also pay to have a half decent big rig, money permitting, to play your mix through, or maybe just some serious subs to check the bass thru. Dont alwasy mix with subs though, as it throws off your perception of how the bass is sitting realtively to the rest of the elements in your tune.
Anyway, one pair of monitors will sound good to someone, and shit to another person. Let your ears be the judge!!
