blockbuster wanted my $35 so badly they hired some gutter trash tax collecting scum from melbourne to collect my significant contribution to their multi-national organisation, and added $30 in the process.. threatening to add more if i didn't comply. the people in this offices air a barely disguised contempt for people who rack up fines, why? they must some of the most anal retentive, systematic souless human beings to do the job they do.

My sister is pretty lucky then. She ended up paying $80 for one overdue dvd from Blockbuster.
At the moment she owes $120 to Optus, they've refered it to a debt collection agency and iinet ($220)are threatening to do the same.

Stop being cheap and just pay the freaking fine, simple! For whatever reason you did not return the movies back, you have to pay a fine. MOST shops offer a discount if you pay the fine when returning the dvd's.

I am not 100% sure about this, but once you get referred to a debt collection agency and you don't pay that debt your name gets registered onto some "bad credit list"?

I think having a bad credit rating against your name can potentially screw you later in life?

There was some lady in the paper a couple of months back who got chased down for owing over a grand to a video store in overdue fees. She went to the newspaper and so they reduced to some hella small amount hahah those stupid fucks always negotiate with you 'ok just pay $5 then'

Uhhh yeah to that, also I think it was in the news that unpaid video store fines can now end up on your credit rating (basically what you're saying there)...

And yeah it can screw you later in life, for say loans of say a house or car or such

you get that every day you have that movie, they lose money, right?

i've worked in a video store and you'd probably be surprised (or not) by how much money they lose from lost and stolen videoes. even overdue ones - every day you don't return that video, is a day they don't get profit from being able to rent it out again.

you're lucky they are going about it the formal way and sending you a nice letter from the debt collection department. the owner of my store used to personally pay a visit to the houses of people who had long overdue video. he was an ex-bouncer.

see, id rather that then a snotty letter from a collection agency... id invite the guy in make him a cuppa tea... have a chat, then hand him said "fine" and the vid back.... its the personal touches that make me come back... ;)

Yep pretty much.

My boyfriend didnt pay a Telstra bill in 2003, he paid it one month later. Since then his name his been stuck on the Baycorp list but it comes off next year. We wanted to get a joint personal loan but couldnt because of this one measly overdue bill in 2003. So the loan is completely in my name now.

Screwing up your credit rating just isnt worth it.

its like 6 or 7 years. Also bad credit rating can stop you getting mobile phones, AGC etc. When I used to work for a mobile phone shop we had to refuse people contracts because they owed something dumb like $6 to western power

It was 5 years for this particular bill that he didnt pay.. but i'm not sure if it varies depending on how severe the debt is etc.

That sounds a bit extreme. I know lots of people who've let phone bills slide for more than a month (myself included) and I've never had problems with financial institutions. Typically your name will only go on the blacklist if you choose to default or don't acknowledge the collection letters.

i was told by the credit file people, and by my friend who did invoicing at The West Australian: the debt has to be over $100 to be registered on your credit file.

ive got some debt collectors after me to get back video store debts that range from: $6.50 - $27.80

now you may think 'just pay it' but the prob is i never had a membership with them cause i woulda been (going from the date of these so called debts) around 12... my mum had a debt tho but cause they couldnt get hold of her they put my name on it and tried to come after me... not just one name tho they tried a few diff alternatives of my name but the same addy.... retards...

mum paid her fine but now there convinced i have one too....

What's not Telstra?

My brother racked up a $600 mobile phone bill with them and didn't pay for 6 months. They disconnected his phone and did just about everything except put his name on the credit blacklist. I know this because he was able to apply for a $5000 car loan a year later despite only working part-time. Additionally, I've often missed payments for my land line bill due to being overseas or interstate. They tend to just tack the amount owing onto the following month's bill with no extra charges.

Well our experience with Telstra was a lot different to yours then.

How long ago was it? Maybe he is on the black list... Our personal loan was quite a lot more than just $5,000.

generally they just continue sending letters,
reminder, late notice, extra late notice, suspension notice, c'mon we really mean it notice etc.
and eventually they will suspend the service.
its all good once you pay the bill

give them a break blockbuster in the US is going under because its owned by mormon who wont stock anything that has worse than a PG rating.

Seriously though I keep getting messages slipped under the door from someone acting on behalf of civic video applecross asking for payment for an unreturned DVD that an exflatmate once rented. Think last message I got said something about garnishing wages, issuing a bench warrant. I forward onto to the ex flatties last known address but i don't think they are paying it any attention either if they are in fact receiving the messages I forward.

They have 6 years to collect the debt, although if u keep returning all mail unopened and are slick enuff to dodge the door knockers they'd probably give up I guess.

As a former video store whore, I think you should just pay your $30 and stop whinging.

Do you know how many people have late fines? Yes, this may be an insignificant amount to you (in which case I dont see why you just dont pay it) but you are denying them from further income from having kept the DVD for longer than you should have. All those people with the odd overdue fine add up.

If you go an buy your sausage roll with sauce and choc chill, you pay the man at the counter for those goods. Why is a video store any different?

When you joined you were shown the terms and conditions on the back of that piece of paper - remember that one? Its called a contract. You signed it. So just pay up.

Most places are willing to knock money off the amount owing if you ask them. If your that tight, stick to illegally downloading your movies.

my sister used to be terrible with her videos and such

when she first moved to freo she got out shitloads of movies from her nearest video store, racked up heaps of fines and returned them well late, never to use their services again. then she would do the same thing to a store a little further away, repeat the process again and again, expanding the radius of video stores she couldnt use

I had Planet Video get someone on to me a few years back about this, I thought it was a bit extreme 3 dvds which were a couple days late.

I told the debt collector I would have been willing to pay Planet Video the next time I went back, but I'm not paying for a debt collector to harass me.

In my old house in london, We were paying all bills money to one guy in a house and he was suppose to pay them. The money sat in his room as he forgot to pay them and I didn't realise to I opened a letter threatening to take me to court as we hadn't paid council tax. I think said person still messed the payment up as I still got a summons. As a result I now have a phone contract with 3, because 02 and vodafone rejected me based on the address. 3 actually has been ok though. Hence at my new flat I look after the bills. This is in the UK though.

over $35 I just paid it and be done with it.

I'm currently having some arsehole ring me everyday about a $3 fine owed to some videoshop. I just tell him I'm not home. I figure if his company can spend at least twice the amount on phone calls to me than what the debt is, it'll be worth it.
