don't go to gigs anymore, don't like much of the pop punk stuff. some of its orrite. i dont mind a bit of 98 mute, NUFAN, anti-flag, jugheads revenge, H2O etc.
more just like classic punk, so you're not exactly going to hear that in perth!! (though i hear buzzcocks are coming, or have they already come?? never liked them anyway, but guess they were good for their time).
so yeh, fav bands would have to be.. angelic upstarts, sex pistols, bad religion, cockney ejects, misfits, adolescents, descendents, agent orange, circle jerks, social distortion, TSOL, dead kennedys etc...

the perth punk scene has gone up and down over the years, nowdays it resembles a teenage frat party
most people involved in it are living together or going out with each other, but shit goes in cycles I guess
in 1998 we had 350 crew at local shows
now theres 30
i dont pay much attention anymore
anyway and here is a special treat mp3 of my band 'billings method' with a song called 'james' that we recorded in about 1998 or some shit, i was the drummer in this band.
its about a guy who used to hang out at 'the fratshed' as we called it. he was pretty annoying.
billings method - james (http://www.iinet.net.au/~elhornet/Billings-Method-James.mp3)

i was a punk when i was 15/16 - then i grew up. Now im into happy hardcore. LOL
seriously though i was one of few 'old skool' girl punks. I loved all the old skool punk bands like NOFX, Rancid, sex pistols, the clash, op ivy, unwritten law, good riddance, propagandhi, lagwagon etc
I went to a rancid gig when i was in year 11 and i got brett's drumstick:) I still have it sitting in my room and it has all the marks from when he hit it on the edge of the drums and stuff. :inlove:
when i was walking home from the gig this guy said he would beat me up for it and i just said " no way mate this is MINE!" and i ran like the clappers.
ahhh good times.

umm...no i dont think so. As i have much respekt for you i dont want to be getting all nasty and stuff but i think u are wrong.
sex pistols were one of the pioneers of the punk rock seen, unlike bands like 'blink 182' for example that are very much a product of their record company, and act stupid to attract stupid teenagers.
bruce
07-01-2003, 09:09 PM
actually blink 182 were shitheads before they got cool
I have a split 7" of them vs The Iconocolats, and alot of their stuff from way before Cheshire Cat came out
its much the same and probably more obnoxious than their stuff now, they just get paid more to be annoying
their new shit is so lame though, its radio pop now :|
I personally was never a fan of the sex pistols and never gave them much credit for doing anything other than trying to piss off the media
oh well, thats just me. i had my idols and sid wasnt one of them :)

I should probably add some more to that
sex pistols only really existed for all of 2 years, and they were marketed from the beginning as a POPULAR band, with their music being aimed at a commercial/mainstream market
johnny rotten was the one who was all into angsty shit and singing about things that would piss people off
I mean really, their first release ever was on a major, and every subsequent release from that point onwards was on a major
we aint talking about an underground band of any sort, they were all about pissing people off on a global scale, and those kinda bands usually do alright

major labels = malcolm mclaren, the band had no imput. hell, even signing huge record deals johnny rotten was still catching the subway without a dime in his pocket...
ok i get your point of view... but they got kicked off those major labels? i think the reason they got attention were because they were punks, the first of their kind then. this was what gave them the attention, not the marketing... people just took notice.
I do get what you mean though, cuz in a way it destroyed punk as well, but i dont think i'd go as far as to call them non-punk.
(though steve, paul, glen at the start and malcolm all wanted to be on top of the pops. sid + johny were the only real punks i spose.... doesnt make the sex pistols non-punk though..)

Recently got into some early US punk after reading Legs McNeil's "Please Kill Me". Try Richard Hell & the Voidoids' "Blank Generation" album, it's pretty good (around 1977 I think). Has one corker of a track, "Love Comes in Spurts". Maybe that was a bit of a blueprint for the brattier end of punk today, I don't know, but Richard Hell sure sounds like ihe's totally neurotic, f***ed up and annoying.
Classic jacket photo of the band too. Like they weren't sure what they were, punk or new wave or teddy boys or accountants or what. Complete misfits.

Tom Withers who was drummer/vocalist for the awesome UK skatecore band The Stupids now records drum'nbass under the name 'Klute'.
Not into Oi! much or US pop punk. Get into a lot of Japanese hardcore/fastcore - bands like Gauze, The Execute, Bastard, Outo, Exclaim, G.I.S.M. (weird fuckers), Lip Cream, etc. (US Hardcore does not compare in intensity)
Also like a lot of '80s Hardcore and Anarcho stuff by the likes of Crude SS, Minor Threat, Terveet Kädet, Stupids, Agnostic Front, Anti-Cimex, Anti-System, SS Decontrol, Heresy, Crucifix, Poison Idea, Raegan Youth, Rudimentary Peni (early pre-grind stuff), Vicious Circle (Oz), Massappeal (Oz).
And (relatively) milder stuff by Black Flag, Angry Samoans, Circle Jerks, The Subhumans, Flux of Pink Indians, JFA, 76% Uncertain & The Faction.
If you want a good intro to old hardcore check out this website: http://homepages.nyu.edu/~cch223

I like punk, electronic punk, i think it's been coined with 'electroclash'.
Things are too clean and refined in this era at the turn of the century. I like things a bit raw, raunchy, and with some fuckin attitude or bite for christ's sake!
I can't think of one modern band i like anymore....death in vegas maybe, their new album's a bit disapointing though. I like 'dubnobasswithmyheadman era' Underworld, they were really gutsy and innovative.

Refering to some of the posts on here...punk is anything that's alternative, or fresh with a bit of bite.
The sex pistols and co coined the term and this is what it meant at the time. It doesn't have to be rock n roll with guitars!

To me, punk is gay. It all sounds the same and i keep on hearing pathetic punk covers of 70s and 80s tracks. which is as bad as me 'stealing' rnb lyrics (but actually worse coz they copy the same melodies and all... i try to come up with my own)...

kevs got a pretty fucked up idea on what punk is then
i find it hard to beleive tho, cause in their early years they never played or associated with any of the punk bands in perth, they kinda hung with more poppy crew
ANYWAY, how bout the punk crew in here up a mp3 or two for others to listen to? I just stuck up one of my favourite tunes ever, by the awesome SLICK SHOES.
The riffing in the intro displays what a clueless 3 chord sterotyping knobend static is, and it also gives you a good taste of how fucking rocking slick shoes are.

I saw NOFX live at Metros Freo in '97? and they put on a damn fine show. But they didn't play any of their early stuff which is more hardcore so I was a bit miffed. My mate nabbed their playlist and I've got the ticket stub somewhere. I think M.U.T.T. supported along with a third band (can't remember the name of them).
Best punk gig for me would have to be Ramones at BDO '95. I got right up the front with all these freaky drugged up young guys and teenage punk chicks with cool, casual expressions and I was thinking 'you have no idea what you are in for.' So the band kick off with the usual '1,2,3,4!' lead-in and I swear I've never seen fear of death expressed so convincingly in my life. The fucking intensity of the mosh was unbelievable and because there were no breaks in between songs (just '1,2,3,4!') there was no chance of escape from the mayhem. I had to laugh at these poor (crying) young girls being pulled to safety by the security thinking to myself 'you poor babies'. In the end it got a wee bit much and I allowed myself to be forced out of the maelstrom - you can only be kicked in the head by so many pairs of Doc Martens before it ceases to be enjoyable. The contradiction between the music (which is hard but not very hard) and the intensity of the action up front was staggering. What a rush!
Also one of the best hard punk bands Australia has produced (The Meanies) played at the same event. I remember sitting on a small grassy hill at Freo oval and thinking that there wasn't gonna be much of a crowd. Then they started playing and all these freaks came out of the woodwork. Punks with big fins, large bald-headed dudes and heaps of skinny, shirtless white bodies. All bouncing away merrily. Some dude took a leap off a 15 ft. speaker stack expecting the crowd to catch him. Funny.
bruce
10-01-2003, 05:46 PM
Heh. I went to all those gigs too.
The support for NOFX in 97 was Mutt and Dystonia. Snuff from England were supposed to play, I was pissed off they didnt come.
Eric Melvin kicked a massive speaker stack off the stage.
Fat Mike said 'sorry about the shitty metal support acts'..
Ramones at BDO is something I will take to the grave.
Another fave gig of all time was Suicidal Tendencies + Storytime @ the Boans Warehouse in 94.

Keith Morris - who later went on to form the Circle Jerks - on vocals.
Far superior to their Rollins era stuff.
I have a live video of Black Flag (from '84) with Henry Rollins out front (wearing a really gay fishnet t-shirt). Some weird nutter in a surgeon's gown lets guitarist Greg Ginn slag on his hair and back through most of the gig. And the crowd laughs at Rollins' verbal wankery. It's a good video but the mix is so bad all you can hear is soft guitar, faint kicks and Rollins' (pretty ordinary) screamed vocals. Anyone know of any other DVDs of Black Flag live (earlier stuff maybe)?

When Klute came over here to play at Players in 2000, The Hardons were doing a gig over the road at the Grovesnor Backroom.
Tom Withers aka Klute had toured with them 10 years previously in his band The Stupids and was totally spun out to learn they'd reformed and were playing a gig across the road from his Perth tour.
Anyway the Hardons got a bit pissy and babbled on about how they were only doing it for money and had been offered stacked of cash to play.
I guess it would be ok to see them again, but somethings should be left to die gracefully. I saw the Meanies in April in Melbourne and it just wasn't there anymore.

I can't help but compare audioslave to Rage, which I think is fair because they're pimping it as cornell with 'the power of ratm' .. and I think rage were so much better.. cornell just doesnt have zach's energy

I love Cornell's voice when he actually sings properly. I spend 90% of their songs waiting for him to stop screaming and give us a taste of the incredible sound he is capable of.
soundgarden meets rage - it's not exactly for the wimpy robbie williams listeners! But I agree it doesn't have ratm's energy, as it seems most of their energy came from Zach.
But Zach's solo efforts have been great so far. It's not a passing that I greatly mourn (re: ratm).

I only went to see a couple of friends play. I really dislike punk. I wouldn't go so far as to diss it because you shouldn't knock what you havn't tried, but I think its all a bit stale. I appreciate the drumming, but you can keep fast guitar chords and nasal yelling about teen angst.

i like punk. Mostly into hardcore Early La/Dc scene's and NYHC! which would be said shouty noisy stuff that everyone who doesn't like punk seems to hate.
Toe to toe i rate. good live too.
mindsnare, sick of it all, madball, blood for blood, circle jerks, minor threat, cro-mags, shelter (not so much later stuff), jawbreaker, ignite, FATA/PTW, social distortion, stiff little fingers, the adverts, the addicts, dead kennedy's... i could go on and on and on.
never liked earth crisis though. far too militant. nothing against sxe but i hate the preachy sxe kids. (vegan reich anyone??). sxe is such a fashion in perth at the moment.
i hate a hell of a lot of punk and love probably equal ammounts.
i was into the perth scene about 3-4 years ago, when i was about 15-16. Boredumb and ballpoint rocked. (although i only saw ballpoint live once, and they were awfull. i requested a song and the singer todl me "we don't play our old stuff". he was an asshole. Don't even get me started on the travesty that is last years hero. i wish they were last years heroes and forgotten about.). i stopped going to punk gigs as i got sick of the perth scenesters. Sick of those scenesters "oh you like band X they are sellouts, i only like obscure band Y who only released one song on a german label in 1978". I'm sure the punkclones guys were ok in person, but they were dickheads whenever i saw them.
