Right i thought it's about time that members of this board had somewhere to talk about Elysium....
Unless you didnt already know, Elysium is held at the Drum Club/Gravity venue and happens on the first friday of every month.
The next Elysium is 6th Jul 01.
So What you might say.....Well, July's Elysium will be the LAST hardcore set anyone can hear from one of Perths most favourite DJs DJ KEV. So Get down there and pay your due's if anyones deserves it - its Kev. Those who know him, will know just how much he's given the scene and how much passion, blood sweat and tears he's put in.
Also DJ Menis off to the UK for while. so it's last set from him too. But he'll be back for sure bigger and better than ever.
Nice One!

Surly if someone offered to book him at an all-ages event to play hardcore he wouldn't turn it down?

thankfully scott brown sometimes plays real hardcore (more on the "party"core side of things unfortunately, but hell it's still 10 times better than any hardcore we get here) but i consider him a sellout.

fuck off with this "nu skool" crap! it's not "nu skool", "newstyle", "new school", or "nu style" its REAL HARDCORE.
get with the program.
i think that scott brown is a sellout because one minute he's making his UK trancecore, and happy hardcore, then he's over at Neophyte's studios in Holland making cheesy dutch style partycore. He doesn't seem to stand for anything in particular. Also I think he has a whole bunch of non-hardcore labels .. he's raking in the $$, he's a sellout.

Now making money= sellout?
So you gotta be living on the bones of your arse crawling around with the hoes of Amsterdam on your hands and knees for some crumbs just to say you are keeping real and you aint no sellout
Obviously liking two different genres is unacceptable these days. If you cant be pigeon holed, of course, you must be a sellout.

you like house? hahaha
i'm growing tired of this argument. if scotty was writing good songs then all would be dandy. but you can tell he writes his hardcore to have maximum accessibility.
all his stuff sounds like it's been specifically made for parties, ie, a commercial sound. the dutch hardcore sound and the UK hardcore sound are totally different.
i don't expect you guys to understand this, as you accept UK happy a legitimate form of music.

same goes for dr z-vago and dj dione... all three of these artists are on the "megarave" label, all used to be good, now all of them are just making partycore crap that goes nowhere.

Actually, I was with the "program" I was a reg down at Gravs 96-99 and went to all the big "Hardcore" raves in Perth- Adrenalin, Helter Skeleter etc etc If Hardcore, which is played out by a decreasing minority of DJ's that used to play Hardcore before the new millenium, nowadays is not "Nu-Skool", then what is it? New Hardcore tracks with old samples packed through? Old Skool? You obviously are a sad, sad person that is unbalanced in their judgement/comments, and dont like to hear your preferred stylee labelled "Nu-Skool" as you wish you were around in 90-95...and if you were....you were probably nearly as much twat as you are now. i don't care what parties you went to! what are you trying to prove? and i would hardly call "gravs" hardcore.
i'm not sure what you mean regarding your comment "1990-1995". are you under the impression that i like oldskool? quite the obvious actually. the past is there as an occasional reminder of what NOT to do, not something that you should focus on 24/7.
and i just don't like the term "nuskool" ; it just shits me off. can't people just call it how it is? why do you need to change the spelling or add "fuNkAy" extra words. its HARDCORE you fools. REAL HARDCORE.

kranky,
**2 party core links
"Fuck this track up" - Tommyknocker (http://www.sector-1.com/media/realaudio/hardcore/ir004a2.ram)
<a href="http://www.sector-1.com/media/realaudio/hardcore/mrv048a1.ram" target="_blank">"Gangsta, Gangsta" - Dr Z-Vago
</a>
**2 good hardcore links
<a href="http://www.sector-1.com/media/realaudio/hardcore/file10ba1.ram" target="_blank">"Rude Awakening" - DJ Promo
</a>
<a href="http://www.sector-1.com/media/realaudio/hardcore/sin15track1.ram" target="_blank">"Absolute Evil" - Ophidian
</a>
**1 newstyle link, to demonstrate the difference
<a href="http://www.sector-1.com/media/realaudio/oldschool/crmx10a1.ram" target="_blank">"Switch" (Tekno Warriors rmx) - Pamp & Da Knox
</a>
pking,
christ! i am not a "hardcore raver" and i couldn't give a fuck about "plur" because it's a load of crap!
i don't care what parties you went to! what are you trying to prove? and i would hardly call "gravs" hardcore.
i'm not sure what you mean regarding your comment "1990-1995". are you under the impression that i like oldskool? quite the obvious actually. the past is there as an occasional reminder of what NOT to do, not something that you should focus on 24/7.
and i just don't like the term "nuskool" ; it just shits me off. can't people just call it how it is? why do you need to change the spelling or add "fuNkAy" extra words. its HARDCORE you fools. REAL HARDCORE.
The Tommyknocker thing and the Z - Vago tune are completely and utterly toy.
I lasted half way through the buildup on the Z - Vago thing before I closed real player. What total candy shit.
Oh yeah. There's a dnb person called Tommyknocker too.
Rude Awakening by Promo is fucking cool. I like it. I actually heard the Loony Tunes guys play a very similar tune in a techno set about 2 years ago.
Absoloute Evil, although having a very gay name is a very cool tune too. The dark vocal sample at the start of that file rules. If only they discovered how to use decent sounding hihats and crash cymbals. Sounds like rebirth/a 909.
Switch is complete and utter garbage. You could get away with playing that on PMFM. Absoloutely toy. Whats with those stupid homeboy vocals? Lame. I hate it.
So...it's thumbs up for Promo and Ophidian.

kranky - thats weird... maybe just try streaming them off the net?
paul - yes agreed, the first 2 links are complete shit. it's a shame because those guys have made some decent tracks, but now they've just become so unimaginative and simplistic. i know it's wrong, but i actually kinda like "switch" - i don't know why, those hihats are just so funky!!!!!! i am conflicted. it's so gay.. but.. so cool..
i am intrigued by the link you posted. while i'm having a bitch of a time listening to it (crap home net access with real audio is a bad mix) it's actually quite decent - i like the lack of over-the-top basslines and the "standard" dnb beat (the beat is well constructed), kind of dreamy but also a little dark. the only thing i don't really like is the melody of that quick sort of half acid thingy - doesn't seem to go with the strings too well. what would you class the track as?
Just curious, in places like Holland right the dutch hardcore sound is one of the biggest there and it seems that the whole country gets into it judging by all the pictures, so does that mean that over there its sorta (dear i say it) 'mainstream' cos its so populer where as say here it doesnt get played that much so obviously its underground? Churchy?
the the the the theAlso, where do u buy those records online? i cant find them anywhere on the net. Im after these tunes:
the the the the Dj Promo - My undeground madness (trance mania!!!)
the the the the Base Alert - Down with the game
the the the the The Masochist - Pump it up yall
the the the the theScott Brown - King of the beats
RTC - Pshyco game
Damn that Absolute Evil tune is hard.
I like that track elhornet.
and I like the absolute evil one, I haven't heard the rest.

If it goes how I want it to, that tune is what I would call THE FUTURE.
I've been dribbling on about it for a while. It's called 'Stay with me' by Klute. Coincidentally he is in town this weekend.
I'm almost feeling sick I am that excited.
His beats are so fresh. No rehashing old tired amens or funky drummers or any of that shit and the synth patterns he comes up with are positively haunting. I dig the acid line personally but a few people have said it sounds odd.
Ok, now we'd better resume gabber/dnb hate mode. People might start rumours we are gay lovers.

kranky - pcs won't cooperate with you - they sense your hostility towards them. when you discover that macs only purpose was to give pcs a kick up the arse in the multimedia department a few years ago, they will embrace you as you embrace them.
tuan - well i don't know about the whole country; don't forget holland has almost the same population as australia, but yes hardcore is very big over there. you could say it is somewhat "mainstream" in holland as far as electronic music goes. this is the reason that a reasonable amount of producers have adopted a "partycore" style; it brings in the cash. thankfully, there are still plenty of producers who keep the underground sound. it's worth noting that hardcore was probably more "mainstream" around 1995 however - around the time of "ecstacy you got what i need" that got in the dutch charts (absolute shit, rob gee is a talentless tool).
the records you're looking for are :
dj promo "file 009 : different breed of men" (third movement)
base alert - "down with the game" (masters of hardcore)
the masochist "10 inch" (masters of hardcore)
dunno bout the other 2 .. i think the scott brown record is on neophyte, and the rtc would be on megarave
they should all be at www.sector-1.com

i listened to those links posted before,
i liked the promo and ophidian tracks, the promo one espcially, the one thing which really turns me off is the kickdrum used in gabber, if there was a different kick for that promo track i'd really like it.

i think hardcore has the best kicks ever... all other styles seem to just use a dry 909 one

The bassdrum is half of the reason ANYONE likes gabber I think! Even when I used to bring my discman to school all the random people that used to listen to it would say "Wow man this has a really different beat, it's wicked!"
It's so stompy, how can you NOT like it?

jesus, what school did you go to? the most common response i got was "ya techno faggot/why don't you listen to some real music like pantera"
anyhow the drum is obviously the most identifying aspect of hardcore. thankfully, the days of being able to 'rely' solely on the bassdrum are well and truly over.

I quite like Headbanger stuff myself churcho!
"now tell me..."
its also worth noting that i've just found out that the headbanger (aka waxweazle) has been making EXTREMELY GAY COMMERICAL CLUB songs (in the club charts too) under his real name Rob Fabrie. So the reason his hardcore sound hasn't progressed is because he's too busy selling out! Lame fuckhead.
Some of the song names he's made under the name DJ Rob Fabrie : "To All The DJs", "Make Some Noise"
real groundbreaking stuff! they sound fucking terrible.
Yeah i see what you mean about the Partycore stuff, sounds like absloute nonsense, slap on a cheeky sample and its instantly easier on the ears.
The kick drum definitely dominates in all forms of gabber, but follow that up with some heavy synthy rythyms or the trance styles ive been listening to of late and its killer! Really starting to enjoy this sound.

i dunno, i just really dislike the distorted kick drum, it seems to dominate the music to much imho,
the synths and noises promo uses are very interesting, and for me the kickdrum is just to much sometimes

just outta curiosity - what do you think of this IDM type stuff? umm.. planet mu, a lot of the american hardcore labels.. it's not so 909 reliant and works more on breaks etc.. pretty interesting stuff some of it - going to play some stuff in that direction on the 22nd!

hmm its hard to describe, but basically its like a really broad genre of shit that's just DIFFERENT. it's a little bit wanky the whole pretense of it being INTELLIGENT..
there's a few interesting pieces but on the whole it's not a genre i don't think you could say you're into without sounding like a tosser...
"ooooh, i listen to nothing but IDM"
check this out for a listen...
http://www.planet-mu.com/discog/ziq011/ziq011_01_lo.mp3
that's an example of WHAT sort of stuff gets culled under the IDM / strange electronics banner.. for example.. Planet Mu even put out a Hellfish track.. go figure!

Aaaah. Attack of the fucking wanky genres and sub genres.
That sound clip sounds just like what I would call Indi Pop, reminiscent of early Sonic Youth or Dinosaur Jr.
I'm gonna go check out of the rest of that site because there sure wasn't anything new or intelligent about that sound clip.

i am confused
i just listened to that clip - i was expecting something "hard" but... well... it just sounds like pop! sounds like 70s pop! i don't understand.. am i missing something?? it hardly even sounded electronic. and it had singing...
so what does idm stand for? where is the link between that indipop sound and a hellfish track???
screwiconboard
24-11-2001, 04:01 PM
trav: yeah! that's the idea! IDM is a strange sort of genre.. IDM stands for Intelligent Dance Music (wank wank) and it encompasses everything from hardcoer to strange electronic breaks..
hellfish doesn't really have too much to do with IDM as far as i know, he just happened to have a release on Planet Mu.. an IDM type label..
Dunno.. just thought you might be interested in that sorta stuff - lots of legwork to be done but i'm sure like most genres there are some excellent bits of music and vinyl to be purchased!
Adam Brown
24-11-2001, 05:52 PM
I always figured IDM to be strictly Drill'n'Bass type stuff, heaps of offtimed patterns and psychotic percussion bits, but I stand to be corrected
And there's plenty more where that came from paul, check the URL at the bottom of my signiture!
