Although I don't fancy the chances of m(any) people posting in here. Here goes anyway:
What psy tunes are currently on your rotation?
I'll start off with
Man With No Name - Interstate Highway Album
Really nice fusion of moody psy and acid, REALLY tight production. I've been caining this for the past two weeks and I'm not even close to being sick of it.
Stand out tracks:
Axis Flip
Cocoon
Broken Promise
Pipeline
:)

I'll stick my head in here even though I probably have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to this genre.
Albums that I've been listening to recently include...
Phony Orphants - Symphony
Wrecked Machines - Blink
Antix - Lull
Dark Nebula - The 8th Sphere
Jirai - Outer Access
Artifakt - Artifakts (probably the most innovative psy that I've heard recently)
As I said, I have no idea about what's considered good or what's upfront in this genre, so feel free to make fun of my tastes if they are in fact bad. :)

If anyone is interested in tech/psy cross over. Have a look for Midi Milliz or Boo Reka.
In particular:
Midi Miliz - Phenomena
Boo Reka - In Hell X
:)

Boo Reka - Control

If we're getting off the topic of upfront stuff and just going for good psy.
Two of the greatest albums EVER
Dark Soho - Sunspot
Dark Soho - Combustion
:inlove: :music: :inlove: :music:
Really hard and dark.
I seriously rate both of these albums right up there across ANY genre.

Add minimal to that and you've narrowed it down to the kind of stuff that I really like. Unfortunately it seems pretty hard to find the kind of stuff that I really dig.
The stuff without so much emphasis on the bassline progression or stuff that doesn't really have too much crazy synth action going on is what I like. Just give me a hard driving sub and bassline with some glitchy accenting over the top and I'm happy.

That tune sounds a lot like Oryx.
Have a look for:
Oryx - Once Upon A Time Rmx
Oryx - Naptune
Adrenochrome - Drug Inventory (if you like percussive stuff)
BLT - Froggy Business
Son Kite - Knob Adjustment
Son Kite - Topic: Perm

not really psy but if you dig ethno too the new entheogenic album is musically the best thing ive heard in a long long time.
and psy if i had to nail it down to just a few names doing it for me atm...
shiva chandra, vibrasphere, neoris.
on top of the ever increasing list of regulars ;)

Another recommended one for those who like it really minimal.
Sensient - Blue Neevus
He's a Melbourne producer... from the sounds of it he's heavily into the glitchy and progressive side of things.

WOOHOO, finally a psytrance thread on teknoscape!!! hehe, as you can see by my username, i LOVE psytrance!!!
my fav albums atm are:
Bush Martians in Wonderland
Alien Safari - Reloaded
Psysex - Come In Peace(not even out yet, i love the internet!)
Lucy in Space with Diamonds(L.S.D.) - Emerald City
Nu-Clear Visions of Israel Part 2 - compiled by Alien Project
Promon - Funky Fumes
Dark Nebula - The 8th Sphere
my fav tracks would have to be:
Lucy in Space with Diamonds - Space Travel
Psysex - Come In Peace
Earthling - Fraggle Rock
Safi Connection - 100% Offichecy
Xatrik and The Slug - Use Your EQ
Promon - Trolltyg
Hydraglyph - Alien Absolution
my fav country that psytrance is coming out of at the moment is South Africa (Artifakt, Rinkadink, Shift etc.), closely followed by Israel (Alien Project, Melicia, Psysex etc.)!!!
hehe, sorry if i seem like i am rambling on, but i always thought i was the only person on Teknoscape into psytrance!!
now i realise i'm not, and i wanted to share my favs with you guys!!
i only just moved to perth, so i don't know anyone here, and don't know what the local psytrance scene is like! :(
what are the doofs like in perth, and when are they usually on?? in summer i would imagine, but i used to live in cairns, and it is like summer there all year round! and doofs all year round too!
i'm going back to cairns next week, to see Fractal Glider and Sugar play, and i can't wait. it will be my first doof since i left Cairns 3 months ago :D
i'm keen to meet anyone around perth that is as interested in psytrance as i am, so if anyone is interested in doing a cd swap or something, i would be interested also!!
i have over 100 cds, so there is plenty to choose from!! all off the net, but hey..... as a poor 18 year old, i cannot afford to buy anything off the net right now. altho i will be getting a job soon, and start supporting the artists that make the music i love! :D
so anyone interested in a cd swap, i'm here!!
PSYTYE
PS. sorry for the long post, but i haven't spoken to anyone in perth about psytrance yet, so i needed to get that off my chest ;)

Welcome psyte! :D Hope some perthies can help you out.
In amongst the cheesey top40 ive been listenign to lately, my current psy picks atm are.
Bonky - Bonky2 LP <-- now this is some fucked up shit. He grabs and incorporates all sorts of weird genres into this lot.
Haldolium - Be Real LP <-- Progpsy with a minimal trance vibe. beware, some vocals!
Tegma - Encoded/Decoded LP <-- Driving dancefloor minimal, on a serious techno influence.
Wizzy NoiseElektro Theatre LP <--- mmm pure wizzy. Flickery, full-power mixed with the tasty wizzy minimal soundscapes. Standout track is definatly Radical Payne, loaded with samples from the Max Payne game.

This thread has to get me out of hibernation.
Ondy, sunrise is from Medium Records which is from the land of Germany, both very familiar to us.
As for my favourites, number one has to be Vibrasphere - Lime Structure, hypnotic, superbly produced morning psy/progressive house fusion.
Also Son Kite, their awesome new melodic tracks (Sunset Street, Reewo, etc.) and their old trippy techy psy, love that Minilogue album Ondy.
Also Green Ohms album Coming Through in Waves i have been listening to a lot lately, totally funky and danceable.
And of course Human Blue, especially the track Carpe Diem, has to be one of the best trance tracks ever made, i think that track is impossible not to like.

Got this double pack on Iboga Records a while back called 'Progressive Trance'. Its really cool, not what I expected from a primarily psy label. There's some nice n funky upbeat tunes as well as this is fairly dramatic progressive tune with a breakdown to die for by Emok.

Good to see you are on the ball, that compilation is called FX and is very fine indeed. I love True to Nature - Pulsar track, apparently they have been releasing stuff on quite a few progressive labels lately which i havent heard.

i might see if i can buy the blockmounted copy tho, because android is a VERY talented artist, and it is an awesome piece of work!
if not, i will just have to collect some flyers in melbs, and make a poster!
fingers crossed he's still gonna send a copy of it tho, but i doubt it! :(
i can't wait for this. it is gonna go off!!

What a bloody cd!!!!!!!
if you are expecting the same old cheese from the first one, like i was, then you will be pleasantly surprised!
this albums is as far from the cheese of the first one as they could have gotten! it is a great piece of work!
hard and bangin, but with some lovely melodies to boot! :)
stand out track probably Acid For Nothing(the only track with a drug in the name).
it is a remix of the old Dire Dtraights song - Money for Nothing!
and boy they do it omse justice!
this will probably be the mescaline of the first one. by that, i mean this one will be a dancefloor filler/killer for years to come!
other stand out tracks are E=MC2 and The Speed of Light!
another great album that i got recently is Cosmic Tone - Overwhelming!

Why does psy kinda stick out by itself? Apart from geographical differences in produces, euro and uk stuff seems very separate from psy. Different scenes?? Is it an east vs west thing to an extent? Haven't come to terms with the real distinctions. Obviously euro style came from what psy would have been a decade ago and then evolved from there. Now it seems much more in line with a techno sound rather than having much house influence..
Or is it more like a difference between trying to define trance/prog? Euro stuff seems more defined by the deep long breaks rather than a solid tech trance relentless beat with few vocals. I just don't get why there's so much division. Is it that euro sounds have become commercialised here much sooner by the whole late 90's ibiza/uk fever?
:w-stupid:
Not that real techno will ever have mass appeal :exclamati

euro? uk?
Psy comes from all over. It sticks out by itself because it has soul, a vibe and isnt just rehashed formula for the masses (for the most part)
Psy itself is a bit of a misnomer, as all genre distinctions. It has fractured into several sub- and sub-sub genres.

That's kinda what i thought. So basically it's various styles of techno that gets bullshit names attached to it depending on what sounds are used (just like other genres)? :exclamati
It's all techno tho really?

I think the Internet has played a huge part in breaking down areas coming out with sameish stuff. Instead of having a handful of mates to criticise your tunes you have the whole Internet community to advise and inspire you.
Some areas have their own sound: France has a real techy cross over happening; Israel with that melodic, dance floor stuff but I think it's generally a world wide sound.

Jhorsehead: Just techno, yes. Dance music that unifies itself with certain sound and beat formulas. But it is also unified by the kind of people that create it, mix it and dance to it.
Anatomically, Psy has a very definate bass-driven feel with sculpted kicks to cut through, or underline the low end section. The dance stuff is made to experience outdoors, and is further sub-divided into types designed to be played at different times of night. Progressive and minimal sounds to warm up. Full-power and twisted stuff for the night. Fluffy, airy, melodic prog-ish for sunrise and morning. Or full power uplifting and melodic styles, depending on how the party is going.
Blah, I could talk about it forever, but the best way to understand is to experience it at an outdoor party with a good crowd, well-tuned system and skilled/talented djs and performers.

I don't know what took me so long to get familiar with this sound spectrum.
I feel like i've been listening to it for years but haven't. Some of the chilled ambient stuff reminds of those old science shows on ABC or docos that were on at Imax Omni or scitech. a la Jean Michel Jarre.
I :) that driving feel that some of it has. It just flows so well. Some of the producers are way up there in terms of their skill. I still don't get why it sits out there as psy trance all alone. Does the whole goa thing add to the stereotype?
Do many people get into this stuff? It doesn't seem to get much exposure or is that just perth? :dontgetit Or me?
A lot of the sounds make me think of what i always tech-trance was but couldn't see any other distinction.

Just Perth :D
Melbourne is a huge Psy-town. Several gigs every week, and outdoor parties very often. One of the psy capitals of the world. But Sydney also has a big scene, as does various places in Qld (Brisbane, cairnes, byron...)
The last two years has seen a huge emergence of a 'progressive' psy style (hate the term progressive tho) which has seen major influences from all sorts of genres, tech-trance, minimal tech, drum n bass etc.
You are right, some of the production is top class and much of it is very under-appreciated or just unknwn to the dance music masses.
'Goa' is pretty much a sub-genre of the psy thing now, and is rarely made. Pretty much brackets early to mid 90's styles. Very melodic and twisted, but not as well produced as the newer stuff ( I think thats true for all electronic genres though). Like all old styles, it has a vibe and energy that can be somewhat lacking in the commonly sterile releases of the 2000's. But that could just be my opinion.
I love the driving feel also. All good trance has this, from minimal to full on. Very danceable and 'lose-yourself on the dancefloor' fashion.

What psy (artists etc) are you trying to mix?
With the more proggy oriented stuff, the only difference i find with conventional prog house/trance is that most tracks start with some kind of melodies, rather than having a percussive build up.
Makes key mixing a must, but i dont think its that much harder otherwise.

Astral, fatali, iboga stuff, proggy/psy. not a huge fan of stuff much quicker than 145bpm
I don't think it's harder than any other style in particular but lots of tracks have major synth clashes. Maybe it's just the type of sounds. Often hi's seem to cut holes in the bass lines of other track. Maybe i'm just not as used to mixing this style.
For example.. Euro stuff always clashes big time as well but at least you can get away with quicker mixes. Psy seems like it wants to be drawn out more with the bass bouncing for a while. You know, it's much less oriented around the break and then moving out and on. Which is part of the reason i like it as well.

adam, i know how much you like sensient..... so if you haven't heard this, then i dare say you will cream your pants when you do :omg:
this album is an absolute masterpiece, and i feel bad saying this... but it shits all over Blue Neevus. while sensient is, and always will be one of my fav artists..... FREq just takes the genre of psygressive to a whole new level! no wonder Iboga snapped him up so fast, this album is sure to send shivers through every dancefloor that encounters the amazing deepness that this cd entails.
(haha, what a review)
and yes madpup, FREqTAL is by far the stand out track on the album. all the phatness of FREq, with the cleanliness of Fractal. love the use of both of their basslines, you can hear the difference between the phat FREq bassline used throughout the track, and the smooth running Fractal bassline that just takes the track to a different world.
i know of a doof coming up in denmark in july, i am gonna ask the orgyniser if i can play in the morning......... JUST SO I CAN PLAY THIS TRACK! even if i only play this track, i would be happy.
other standout tracks are Strange Attractors and Return to the Master.
Also got hold of the new Son Kite
another absolute gold album.
if FREq is the master of psygressive, then Son Kite are definately the masters of progressive. this album is an absolute gem, every track takes you on a journey to another realm and then brings you back agai... only to be thrown back into it again. i can't really pick a standout track, except for maybe On Air.
every track on this cd is mixed in, and in my opinion, mixed in well! not like other mix cds, where you can really pick the mix without even knowing anything about the music, this is different. you could leave this cd on play at a party, and i'm sure most people wouldn't even realise.
these two releases are definately the two best releases of 2004.
i have heard rumours of a SunControlSpecies album that is in the making for later this year, and also a new Sensient. these should be two top notch releases, by two of the worlds best producers!
let's just hope sensient has his new album finished by the end of october ;)

Impressions, just incredible. Over 10,000 people in a huge village. The crowd was about 90% Germans. Event was incredibly well organised, the way that only germans can, amazing sound systems for both floors and the most out there lasers i have ever seen (just check out the photos). A lot of messyness as expected, during the last night people were dressing in all kinds of weird constumes, such as witches, gnomes, etc, just to trip each other out. I was told that towards Monday morning closing this dude was rolling a small cart on wheel around the dancefloor and it had a flag attatched to it, with LSD written in bright orange on the flag, so if someone wanted more acid they could see the flag above all the heads on the dancefloor and approach and buy. Insane!!
As for the music, Freq was the best for me, his sunday afternoon set rocked the dancefloor like i have not seen before, massive basslines, almost all tracks which were not from his album, just amazing. Tegma played a great set full of energy, some older techy tracks were played, with more melodic layers added and some newer, more tracks with a lot of melodies. Wizzy Noise set was pure madness!! Atmos played a pretty good set, but it was not mixed and the tracks were not that different from the versions i have heard before. Eskimo's set was stopped early due to computer keeping on crashing, i was not that impressed anyhow.
All the djs has good mixing skills (something unsusual for a psy party), however a lot of very ordinary full-on got played. A standout was Dj Vazik from Mexico, a set of incredible energetic psy.
Everyone who i talked to at this party have said that out of all psy festivals they attended this one was the best. Just an amazing experience.

very much liking the more twisted, quirky side of psytrance lately! the kind of stuff that clears a dancefloor in seconds(in perth anyways), leaving people saying "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?"! most of this stuff is from finland and around that area.... where the pixies live :D
my fav albums atm are:
Eraser vs. Yojalka - Tarinat (Exogenic Records)
VA - Schizm (Giiwa Records, Byron Bay)
Puoskari - The Audio Hustler (Freakdance Records)
VA - FDCD03 (Freakdance Records)
A snippet of the review of Puoskari - The Audio Hustler, from psyreviews
As with all this sort of stuff from the foresty playground of Funland you'll either love its quirky oh-so-bouncy happy fluffiness to bits or wish that you'd never been subjected to such nonsense. ~Or, as is more likely - you'll do both at once.
i'd love to unleash all of this onto a dancefloor one day. it will either clear the dancefloor in seconds........ or will send it into a frenzy!!

indeed, schizm is a top notch cd.... prob my fav aussie release this year! the Sattel Battle - Dotman track is a killer as well!!!
also, reece has expressed interest in playing over here. so ondy, whenever you get back do you wanna throw a party. we could bring over Neuron Compost(reece) and Nexus Crawler to play. betwen the two of them, they would turn the party upside down, leaving people wimpering in their cars screaming "when will the bad man stop"!! :alien:

Exactly right. Can't make people think about what they're listening to in Perth. It has to be catchy or they're just not interested.

random e.g. infected mushroom - deeply disturbed (violet vision remix) do you mean slow chunky dubby breaks like the start of your song Never See The Sun, or faster jumpy more traditional breakbeats?

I cant think of any albums, but psy artists insert some breakbeat tracks in their albums. Here is what i could think of:
Ticon - It breakz my heart
Native Radio - Cyberfish
Darshan - Spectra
Planet BEN - breakbeater
Check out Kooler - Open album, it has some nice breakbeat tracks, although i cant remember their names.
I am sure there are many more, but thats all i can think of atm

someone didn't happen to tell you that last friday night did they?? haha i told someone at a party on friday night that Infected was the place to start looking.
Infected Mushroom is definately a good place to start, the album Classical Mushroom is one of the biggest psytrance albums ever and has influenced nearly ever artist since. a good introduction.
some other great cds include Hallucinogen - Twisted/The Lone Deranger, Shpongle - Tales of the Inexpressible/Are You Sphongled?, GMS - No Rules, Hydrophonic - Aquabatics, Protoculture - Refractions, Reefer Decree - Sound Frames, Oryx - On The Run and Fractal Glider - Digital Mandala.
there's alot of different stuff in there, from slow and cruisy, to phat morning music to crazy night music. look thru this thread and you should be able to find plenty more artists to look into :D
i know that Dadas has a tiny collection of psy downstairs, but they don't have much. i cleaned them out of their best stuff a couple of weks ago. haven't really seen psy anywhere else in perth.
the best place to buy online is Saiko Sounds (www.saikosounds.com). they have superfast delivery time(2-4 days) and cds at around $20! another place to look is www.psyshop.com, but i have heard of a few people having problems with them. altho they do have a large collection and usually have the cds u are looking for if saiko doesn't!
Personal fav tracks for me lately are...
Neuron Compost - Stinkin' Hippies
Mr Peculiar - Charlies Trip
Eskimo - Scrambling Signals
Hydrophonic - Creep Cheeky Naughty Naughty
Legohead - Dynamic Ribbon Device
Voice of Cod - Art of Feng Shui

Yeah, it seems to be that way - when I hear something that I like, more often than not it's an Australian producer. Blue Neevus by Sensient was one of my favourite albums of 2003, and the latest Dark Nebula album seemed quite good.
I'm really just a casual listener - there's probably only 1 or 2 psy albums per year that I really feel are consistent the whole way through.

If you like that kind of stuff have you heard anything on Ambivilant (Ambivilent?) records? There's two compilations, Significant Elf Proclivity and um....Creeping Ambivilant Tendencies (I think). You might like those.

I found this floating around on soulseek even though it's not supposed to be released yet, how exitement!
A full half of the CD (1, 2, 3, 6) features label owner Simon Posford (aka Shpongle/Hallucinogen) so this was a real treat for me. My favourite so far is Long Long Arms, the vocal sample gets me every time.
Metal Sharon is Posford's new collaboration with Merv from Eat Static, which, when they release their album this year, will be the first (un)official full-on psytrance Hallucinogen album to be released in 7 years! I think they're saving their best stuff for the proper release, however...

Kindzadza And Friends - 13 Dimension Connection (http://www.discogs.com/release/392935)
Basically a collaboration between Kindzadza and 9 other artists, one for each track.
It's in much the same vein as Waves From Outer Space (http://www.discogs.com/release/229181) (Kindzadza's first album) ; it's quite pacey and heavy but still retains the squelchy full-on synths and production. Lots of chops and changes.

Agreed!
'The Lone Deranger' is without a doubt my favourite full-on psytrance CD of all time
I first heard it 6 years ago (Gamma Goblins was actually the first psy tune I ever heard) and I wouldn't be stretching the truth to say that I still play it two or three times a week... he's created an 80 minute CD with years worth of material on there. Even now I listen to it and discover new layers in there, it's truly a work of art.
Finding other stuff AS GOOD as Hallucinogen is always going to be a mission, but here's my recommendations (My speciality is usually in the dark/minimal/tekky styles, so I'm sure the others will be able to suggest more)

Last two albums (the ones I mentioned before) have a much more sunshine and happy feel to the them, but still with a lot of depth and in a twisted way that Wizzy do so well.

Sensient - Phobial (single)
(as featured in this week's signiture)
As far as I know this was only released on a random compilation album ('Groove Zone'), which seems to be the case with a lot of Sensient tunes... but it's quality all the way I assure you
I love the 2 or 3 hi-hats he throws in after each wobbly metallic noise. And of course Sensient's trademark off-beats that make me love him so much.

The Tripswitch album (Circuit Breaker - one tune off which is featured in AB's sig right now) is really nice.
Waterjuice - Melbaphonics is in a similar vein as well.

Overlap from Russia, amazing morning sounds, very original. They have released a fair few tracks on various compilations recently, each just keeps on getting better and better.
Check out these tracks:

Am I completely wrong in thinking that Cyanescens aren't really full-on? Damn, I thought I had this stuff sussed.
The Cyanescens material seems closer to something that Sensient would do rather than a lot of the godawful full-on stuff that I've heard (I just think that the faster speed might be misleading).
Please shoot me down if necessary.

i can remember when i burnt Cyanescens onto CD i had to slow it down 5% to make it sound plausable

haha as i said.... different ears hear different things. i have had many a argument about how legohead is progressive(but it's still hard as fuck), where the other person is dead set that it is fullon. but maybe we were both right?
because i have played legohead at 3am... and also at 10am. and it went down perfectly both times!
but i can see what you are saying about thinking cyanescens is more on the progressive side.

I think I'm turning into a sissy as I get older, heaps of psy sounds too fast to me now!
I just loaded up one of my favourite psy sets from a few years ago (Gen.6 live @ Amnesia) and it sounded way faster than I remember it...
I blame Sensient! I've turned into a proggy wuss-bag :(

I know what you mean. There are some artists and tracks I can't listen to because they seem to be very flat. It does seem to be a lot of the faster stuff but I don't think speed of track is that relevant in this theory. Artists like Menog make tracks that are just as fast but have so much more feeling to them.
I suspect you've just found your groove.

Definitely looking forward to the new Sensient material. :inlove:
FINALLY managed to track down a copy of his new album (Pressure Optimal), sounds awesome so far.
Track 5, 'Lather', has some nutty percussion lines in it, driving me round the bend!
Start looking!

Sensient is sending me over his new album.... should be here later this week!
i've been tempted to download it in the meantime, but i think waiting is going to make it all the more better! but if adam likes it, i know it'll be good!!!
how does it compare to Blue Neevus? also, are you going to buy it once it officially comes out? i download alot of music, but this is one album that i think needs to be bought!
sensient rocks the socks of an elephant wearing jocks!

Yep I'll definitely be buying this once it comes out... I've been checking Saiko on a regular basis this entire month, still nothing! Nothing on the Zenon site either.
It's a bit more complicated then Blue Neevus; he's obviously developed his talent for really tricky percussive sections, which is why I love him so much!

Track 4 and then 6-8 don't really do it for me as much, I think because they lack the drive and funk that I'm used to from Blue Neevus. It's probably just the absence of a nice driving bassline hook to get into on those particular tunes.
Lather and Immersion are my picks off the album.
