Thread: Worst tune of the year so far

    Default

Yes thats right people. After months of praise about High Contrast from yours truly, I was amazed to hear this tune. I actually laughed.

The tune samples 'Has It Come To This' by The Streets, 'Ripgroove' by Double 99 & 'Bodyrock' by Andy C & Shimon.

As someone posted on the drum and bass arena comments page - THERAPIST (Czech Republic) said: #39832 I probably miss what's the point of making 1 shitty track out of 4.

Surely this tune is a piss take, will never be licensed, and we won't have to hear it. Hopefully this sort of tune is not a sign of things to come, or else i'm going back to listening to cold chisel.

Apparently being caned by John B, Fabio and Hype.

You can hear the tune here - don't take my word for it, hear it for yourself, but i recommend you don't.

Yay, more recycled bullshit, just what drum & bass needs.

It sounds like a badly executed remix of "Tainted Love", and would probably be a good candidate for Ram Records, they're pioneers in the field of rehash... wait, isn't that an oxymoron? (RAMM38 anyone?)

This is the vocabulary police, Id like you to come down to the station. We'd like to ask you some questions about your gratuitous use of 'oxymoron'

I think return of forever is one of the worst tunes I have ever heard. No offense to local crew, but it sounds like underdone house sped up to 170 - something you wish you hadnt bothered downloading from mp3.com.
I like to dissect rhythms. Anyone who can't hear emotion in a drum beat suffers from a lack of understanding of what's going on in dance music and they need to hear more.

Man a few people have said this to me but that tune is one of my personal favourites of the year. I can't understand how people can't get into it....but thats life.

I detest most of the dark shit thats being produced by the likes of Dylan, Facs, Bkey, Loxy and Ink etc, but some people love it.
Anything those guys have produced gets my tag of worst tune of the year.

For me it has the same feel as two step. As though it is a potentially good tune that never got finished, or a halfbaked effort. Lacking richness or depth.

It grates on the top of my spine the same way britney does.

Granted people have there opion, but i just find it amusing.

I'm actually talking about future Ram stuff when I say rehashed. They seem to have settled into a groove lately where it's just comfortable to bang out any old tune and it'll do. I liked their stuff around the Ram Raiders series - dancefloor with a tinge of darkness - now it just feels like it's lacking.

Here I'm referring to Beastman, Back 2 The Future, more freakin' remixes of Truly One (2k2 & 2k1 remixes backed - ugh).

Edit: Sorry, I forgot about the M.I.S.T remix of Ram Trilogy's "Evolution" as well... the butchering of a classic.

The new Ram sub-label "Frequency" is sounding promising though - two great releases already, and the 3rd release by Kryptic Minds is one I'm looking forward to.

My vote for the worst tune this year so far: Faith In Chaos - Night Fever. You have to laugh when the sirens and samples come in.

Name me a tune by tech itch and I'll show you a shit I did that has more musical merit.

I'd have to agree with Uisce on this matter, that Dylan tune is absolutely horrible. In fact, I'd go as far to say that the best tracks to ever have one of Dylan's alias' attached to them have been remixes by other producers.

Why on earth would High Contrast even want to risk damaging his reputation by producing a track as a piss-take of the garage scene?

Even if this does turn out to be true, there'll be enough people out there who'll think that the tune is legitimate and the damage will have been done.

The fact that it's being "caned" by John B, Fabio & Hype makes me think that it is actually a tune that is liked by some of the bigger names in the industry. I mean, you don't go out and drop serious dollars or pounds on getting a dub cut if you don't like the tune, do you?

He would have had to get permission to sample from the track, especially if it's a big mainstream one, and I doubt that they would have given it to him if he had said "Yeah, I'm just going to pull the piss out of the music you produce."

Satire has never really been a pervasive element in drum & bass.

listen to yourself. . . do you think he cares what little trainspotter types around the globe think as they sit there stroking their gottee, sippin on the lowfat goat's milk latte whilst listening to the new dubs on their computer . . .

Why would he do it, as I said as a fuk off to the garage scene, hearing something crap he has proberly went out and made it.

It wouldnt damage his rep if people with half a fuking brain thought about it. He has consitantly produce good tunes and then this. And with the name "Has it come to this", come on it could not be anymore obvious. There is a bit of tension between DNB and Garage in england, Iam not sure what its over maybe the garage scene has taken from D+B crowd. Zinc has also done this with 138 track with GQ over the top, if you listen to the lyrics hes blantenly dissing garage. He got death threats over that.

Right John B is a nutter and is know to drop wierd tracks, He played that John B ROCK dub as hes last tune here. Fabio proberly actually likes it because ladies like it and dosent realise. And hype is a huge shit stirer. Granted he does make Bingo beats, but this tune is definitely a piss take, as I said.

Samples, fuk dude most of garage is old jungle anyway, so I dont think they have to worry about asking permission.
The bassline is ripped of anyhow.

I cannot believe people cant see this.

"HAS IT COME TO THIS" doesnt that say it at all.
    CHRIST!
Why does everyone laugh when they hear it???

"Rock" was cool, I wish I could hear it again.

I laugh at a lot of tunes when I hear how bad they are - does that necessarily make them pisstakes? (Bodyrock for example)

I don't know, maybe I just can't make sense of the purpose of dissing garage. IMO by using samples from it, they're really just giving it more exposure, no matter how bad the tune is (and you can see from the comments on d&b arena that some people actually like it).

I don't understand what people are trying to achieve by making a tune that pulls the piss out of another genre. If people like garage, they'll listen to garage. If people like drum & bass, they'll listen to drum & bass. If people like both then they'll listen to both, regardless of what some stupid track suggests they should think about garage.

It's understandable why fans of other genres often generalise people who listen to drum & bass as wankers when you've got this kind of negative vibe towards other styles of music.

He was probably asked to remix this tune, and even if he wasnt asked, like.. thats his interpretation of the song, he wanted it to sound that way, and im sure that he must like it, otherwise he wouldn't have made it in the first place.
I dont think hes pisstaking at all, i reckon good on him, its a good drumnbass remix of an oldish garage tune, thats what it is, plain and simple.

Marc i seriously doubt three or four big artists would sit down together and deceide to get high contrast to make a technotronic style megamix combining elements of all tracks.

    Tim open you eyes man!

Its a fukin piss take on the garage scene.

Its a "fuk you" to the garage scene dude.

Look at the title "Has it come to this" simply saying that has the garage scene reverted to remix old tainted love tune.

Tim its a piss take he really doesnt mean it.

Please dont taint mr contast for this.

Thats right its a piss take.
The tune in question is one of the worst I've ever heard. Bodyrock was shit, and RIP groove shouldn't be touched like that.

In regards to "most of garage is old jungle anyway" - bollocks! You mustn't have heard much garage Ryan, because I don't think I've heard any "garage" with amens in it. Admittedly "breakstep" and all that go is jungle sounding yeah, but not garage.

The only sample I can think of thats been ripped from old jungle and repeated in garage is from "wheel up" by dj gunshot. The vocal in the intro has been ripped apart, but its also been ripped and chucked into other jungle/drumnbass as well. It was featured in RIP groove, and the bell sounding sample has been in a few other tunes.

P.S. "Has it come to this" was the original title of the garage tune, so that wasn't intended as a pun. But I'll agree with you, the whole High Contrast remix of this tune is a complete pisstake.

    Oh so touchy!!
Christ its almost like I fucked ya mum and grandmother at the same time!!

I have heard alot of garage, and yes its sounds like old jungle (without the amens smart arse) and has alot of sounds from jungle. Alot of the basslines sound like old jump up.
I didnt say this was a bad thing.

But to be serious I couldnt give a shit.

    Precious garage for woody

lol Ryan do feel free to root my gran as you'd have to dig her up!

I reckon the only garage that REALLY sounds like jungle to me is all of Zinc's shit... its so 45 jungle lp's on 33 its not funny. 138 trek even had a jungle version ffs! Some basslines are similar to jungle - like some Ed Case, Zed Bias and Jameson.

But still... you can't say Sunship sounds like SS

I just thought it was funny you said garage samples were from old jungle.

um actually radium - when i listen to garage i play spot the sample. a fuck load of it is lifted from old dnb as im sure mr packer will confirm - on saturday night i will point some out to you. i see nothing wrong with giving an old track a new lease on life
The problem with the world is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself

I don't see anything wrong with it either - except for making a massacre out of RIP groove =P

can you think of a few sample examples? and do you mean drum hits or basslines or vocal samples or what?

I posted this i'm sure you'll know - its had the crap sampled out of it:

    wheel up

oh and i realised i forgot another blatant example - that stupid speed garage tune that totally rips the locust bassline. They've just fucken lifted the thing straight out! those bastards!
