Is there a program that can detect and arrange tracks in BPM for you? I know traktor does it but it often doesnt too

Call me old fashioned but isn't that what your ear is for. Know your tunes, mix em accordingly.

Personally when I'm putting new tracks into Traktor I check the beatgridding manually for each new track. A bunch of the time it gets it right, and a bunch it doesn't, like detecting DnB at half its BPM or not being able to understand the beats in Glitch Hop properly. Surely you'd just want to setup your tracks manually (if the auto detection doesn't get it right) in Traktor before the party, then you can trust the BPM is right when you're playing out. I wouldn't completely trust any automatic detection.

But it's really hard to beatmatch when you're too trolleyed to stand. Ask Choice about that.

Ha ha! If only they'd had this shit when I used to play at Gravity. Still would stop me mixing into a tune, then mixing the same tune I'd just taken off back in again. But hey, it might have killed a few trainwrecks.

Or do the same thing in Traktor? Traktor lists by BPM too as long as you've analysed/manually configured the beat grids of your tracks. Think there's a setting to auto analyse all new tracks you load in too.

Let me clear this up (mainly for Kevin)

I play vinyl, can play cds but dont own any cdjs.

I borrow my cousin/housemates traktor for parties because my vinyl is mostly dubstep/garage/house/drum and bass got only a few hip hop records but shitloads of hip hop mp3s and cds i plan to rip to mp3. Ill take a full bag of wax, but my wax tends to get dirty/disorganised ripped sleeves at parties because usually i'm having a jolly time and deal with it in the morning.

I wasn't being lazy, just wanted to make it easier to play hip hop all night and enjoy myself/get shitfaced (free beers all night ffs), as i said it's merely for convenience.

is the beat grid those lines in the waveform? theyre thin as and move to quick for me to try and bother to understand, i really dont know much about traktor and what it can do, in terms of setting up tracks manually, etc

bpb - just import the tracks into traktor, select all and right click and analyze. Then leave it to do its thing. Then right click the header bar and make sure bpm is tagged. Then order by bpm.

I did the same recently for a party. I can mix and feel I can bring something different to the party. My mate came an helped, well did the majority while I got drunk with mates. He has a vast collection of techno on vinyl, i've got mostly DNB.

I use traktor now.I only play for fun. I love playing a party and just whacking them in order of bpm and just working my way up. Tempo building, genres crossing over at what ever speed the party takes.

At that party we started on hip hop with splashes of funk and worked up from 85 bpm while everyone was arriving. Taking it in turns to mix. Was loads of fun.

My collection is 70 bpm through to 170 or so on traktor, which is what I listen too. While collecting vinyl I would only work on a small bpm range so I had a decent amount of tunes to mix. i'm not spending all my cash on vinyl as much as I'd love to.

Vinyl is boss and I'd love to have vinyl for all my beat port collection, CDs and freebies of the net but I don't.

Ive never paid attention to bpm, you limit what you can do with your music. Some tracks sound wicked played slower or faster than what they were written to - use your ears and find different context for the same track. Much fun.

Yeah the beat grid is those little lines, so you can have the program automatically decide what the BPM is or manually edit it by moving where the lines are and shit. Go googling for beat grid traktor if you wanna fuck with it. The idea is you set it up beforehand then your cue points will stick to the beat and you can tell Traktor to sync tracks to a specific BPM using the master clock.

If you're using Traktor though setting up your beat grids beforehand makes this easy. Some stuff does indeed sound awesome at the "wrong" speed.
