    Buy it in Canada.

Cheaper and a much larger range of both this years and last years goods.

true. bigger range for sure. we dont have the market here to get a wider range of brands, so we stick with the big 3 or 4 (burton, libtech, ride and k2) but the boards that are just being released in the states now, we've had in store since april or may

I shall be going to Canada for the whole of this coming ski season, and as such require devices typically associated with such activities.

Firstly, looking at the sheer bulk of proper boarding jackets and pants I assume it would be easiest to get over there. Is there likely to be a great price difference getting such things over there as opposed to over here? (not on mountain but in Vancouver or Kewlona)

Second, full jacket or shell? I am presuming full jacket.

Third, what should I look for in a board/bindings/boots? I am a reasonable (intermediate) boarder but haven't been in a good few years, so fully expect to be on my arse for the first few days. Not looking to do anything massively spectacular, just generic runs.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
There is a street in vancouver, i never remember the name - it's like fourth or something. Anyway, go to Boardzone. They have a store and then a sell-off store, where they sell all last years (and previous) stuff for cheap, cheap. I went there and got fully kitted out my second day in Canada... boots/pants/board/bag/bindings and it's all been good (three years on).

And if you want to buy new season stuff, there is a zillion board/ski shops within 100 metres of each other.

Boardzone.com too if your interested - they'll ship anywhere in Canada and I know people that have gone through the online store 'cause we live in the middle of Canada. OR backcountry.com

Kelowna doesn't have a hell of a lot - I would absolutely recommend buying in Vancouver. Though, there is some good places in Kelowna, but their name escapes me... something obvious like "snow skate". Are you going to Big White?

If your traveling I'd buy a shell. Way more transferable into other uses :P

Dart - are you coming to Canada for the Olympics?

d-vo, or anyone else, I want a recommendation on a super flexy board to ride. I've been riding an Options Paloma for three seasons and want something I can get lots of pop off and lots of bend... my friend rides a Burton Feather, which she loves, but it's no better than my Paloma. Suggestions!?!??!?!

feathers are an awsome board - but if you've been riding for a while it might be a little too flexy and you might get bored of it pretty quick. mebbe see if you can demo a few boards from somewhere. my suggestions would be: burton blender, any ride boards for women and some of the new k2 range for girls are wesome. gnu are also making some great positive cambered boards for ladies this season. most companies are starting to release all the new stuff now. check out transworld snowboarding site for their latest board reviews - its really helpful.

also burton.com have some great tutorials explaining the whole camber/reverse camber technology

Really? interesting! That's helpful to know.

    Thanks

I'm yet to purchase a new board for the season... waiting for a few other things to work out first. It's too hard.

custom boards are awesome. all round killer. the girls equivalent is the feelgood.

the ics system (infinite channel system) is ok. it just enables you greater options when setting your bindings. normal boards you only have a few preset options, where as with ics you can have your feet super wide apart, or closer together.

is it better? meh - not really. the only advantages i can see, is if you ride a lot of rails, and you want your stance wide for better balance. also the ics specific bindings have less padding/base under the foot, so your foot is closer to the board, and you get more of a skateboard feel. also instead of having 3 or 4 screws connecting you to the board, you have just 2

i use a malolo, with the ics channel, but have standard bindins. i use an adaptor which works fine.

ahhh.... freeride is generally an all mountain board, and is normally a directional board (meant for one direction, normally has a bigger nose) where as a freestyle is a bit more trick orientated. jumps, halfpipe etc.... and might be more twinish (can be ridden both ways)

thats how i see it anyway. the difference really isnt that big, just the directional thing really

    It's here!!!!!!!

While you may all be enjoying lovely sunny days it's finally winter and the ski hills are opening! Oh yeah! Two this week, one next Wednesday and two the following week!!! woohooo

It even looks like I might get to ride at least a couple days in the next week, which is even better.

And, they're all having awesome snow fall for this time of year! I shall continue praying to the Ullr

/excited rant (Sorry, I've been bored at work for most of the day pondering to make the trip to Lake Louise to go ride on Friday for opening day. Plus, this is how I justify putting up with -20 weather.)

Serious question: How DO you put up with -20 weather? What do you have to wear and can you stay outside for long?

We are going to Furano in Feb and the temp range is -4 to -17, and I can't even comprehend that!

i dunno. layers are my saviour (thermals - or trackies etc. - are key!). and a beanie/gloves. i get cold ears/fingers and once they're cold i'm cold. it's the wind that bothers me more than anything though - good shell for legs/arms is good. I have a black shell i wear snowboarding/running/riding/hiking and i swear buy it - it's not gortex and it wasn't SUPER expensive, but it fits layers underneath it and packs up small.

It's not like you hang around outside. If your outside you're riding (so you're warm) or I run (so I'm warm) or I ride my bike (so it's quick between warmth). It's almost annoying, 'cause you need a winter jacket outside and you can wear summer clothes inside! But you can stay outside, it's not impossible.

You get used to it... i've only just got back form perth and found tonight really quite cold but it's only -4. But, come the end of January and -4 will feel warm

AJ: I have faith in you I hope my dates coincide with yours @ Whistler but I don't think they do

Furano is awesome. We will be there again for 1.5 weeks over Feb right before we head to Nagano for another 1.5 weeks.

The only time you really feel the cold is when you are not moving. eg. whilst on the chairlifts. Furano have a awesome 101 person cable car, a 4 person gondola and a couple of their chairlifts have pull down screens all to keep you warm between runs.

All that said.. better to be overdressed and able to hire a locker to put in any clothing you decide to take off than underdressed and sitting on an open chairlift when a blizzard comes through with zero chance of getting back to your room where your toasty leg thermals are sitting.

If I remember correctly it got to -21 on one of the days we were there and it just so happened that I had forgotten to put my thermal bottoms on amongst all the excitement to hit the slopes. Later on whist I was riding on a open chairlift with my friend, a blizzard came through I could see nothing for about 10min, not even my friend sitting right next to me. My legs and crotch were f'ing freezing due to the accumulationof snow falling sky and from blowing off the trees straight onto me. I think that was the only time I felt cold unintentionally.

It's all locked in. We only have a week in Whistler before we jetset off again. I wish it was longer but Canada (in general) is just so expensive as they are preparing for the winter olympics.

Though, I'm still trying to figure something out.

Canada's ski resorts are expensive all the time. Though Whistler is the worse!

I plan on getting some snow gear next year. Went snowboarding for the first time at Mt Buller in July this year and fucking loved it. I can totally understand why some people just follow the winters around the world.

Plan on going to New Zealand next year as my sis's bf's sis (lol) owns a hotel at the bottom of one of the ski fields over there. Free accom, ya!! Hanging out big time!!

Not sure if you were talking to me but mine is camber.

Also this will be the first time with magnatraction for me. Anyone ridden a board with it? Does it make a big difference?
not ridden (yet), but have sold many

the magnatraction provides more contact points with the snow, so easier to turn and stop, also provides more grip and turn in icy conditions

Nice. We may be there at the same time! If possible I will stick to the gondola most of the time to keep me warm.

Where are you going in Nagano? We did Hakuba but that was our first time snowboarding so didn't know what we were doing at all Still fun though, of course.
