Was just saying the other night that I wanted to go snowboarding, I got a very enthusiastic "ME TOO!" back and lets save to go. Thought about NZ, Japan is too expenno right now. Then I remembered Hotham. Two birds, M E L B O U R N E visits!! Even a few days at Hotham would be good for a start. When's the latest you should probably go/can go?

    Yossarian - you're in M E L B O U R N E orr?

No real plans, I have wanted to visit friends for some time and so has the Mr, Hotham came to mind being in M E L B O U R N E and wanting to go snowboading. 2 birds and cheaper!

Not something that can be done right away due to work, so wondering when the latest it could be done this winter is.. can take it or leave it, it's just an idea for now really but would be ideal.

Last season i went up a few times, the last time was late Aug. and it slowly went downhill after that.

Bit hard to predict really cause this season has started off slowly. But i think you'll be safe with late Aug.

japan is 10 times cheaper than boarding in the eastern states. travel is cheaper to melbs obviously. but lift tickets, food, accom, beer is all at least half of what you'd pay in M E L B O U R N E.

oh yeah - and they have snow, lots of snow

But it doesn't have friends and family! If I had to choose snowboarding over Melb/friends i'd choose the latter but i'd love to do both. We could probably swing free accom also I do want to do Japan at some point but now is definitely not the right time.

nah stuck in bloody Perth. Girl just got to Hotham, will probably head over for a few weekends if I can hook myself up a job there. Maybe Threadbo as well depending what is happening with a mate's house there.

"Who's they?" he wanted to know. "Who, specifically, do you think is trying to murder you?"

I've got friends in Methven and have stayed there a couple of nights during my trip over here, Mt Hutt has the nick name of Mt Shut as it does get very windy up there and quite often chairlifts or the whole mountain is closed. Coldest temp has been -6 this year but nothing to extreme! Heaps more snowfall than qtown/wanaka resorts too

At the moment there are 7/12 lifts open at Hotham. Like most of the Aus mountains, the snow is pretty damn hard and pretty icey. But go up with good friends, have a laugh and you will have a top time

Haha, let me know how it goes D'vo! We're going to use our frequent flyers to do NZ (Heidi's family is there too) or Japan when we get back from our mini Asia/India/Nepal trip.

Want to know if you prefer Jap or Kiwi gnarlyness.

Mt Hutt isnt a bad place to ski/board but the lack of good accommodation/activities/nightlife close by makes it such a boring choice when you have Queenstown on the other side of South island as a base with 3 slope choices less than an hour away (Cardrona, Coronet Peak, Remarkables).

I have done them all going for Mt Hutt first time due to being cheapest and would never go back. It also seems more exposed to bad weather. In the week I was there 5 years ago, 2 days gthe mountain was shut due to bad weather.

Any suggestions/recommendations for some gear or is anyone demoing gear while on their travels?

I am going to be changing my setup for the season and I am thinking about rocking a GNU Park Pickle just need a set of bindings to go with it. I am also probably going to pickup a pair of Zoom Kaiju's for a bit of flair.

I am VERY much looking forward to snow season, as it means a trip to Utah and maybe a trip back to Colorado to Silverton depending on my bonus and how wicked I get.

ummm.... park pickle is great if you're lapping the park, but i wouldn't take it anywhere else. also a big problem i found with all mervin boards is that to cut back on weight they don't continue the edge around the nose and tail. so the moment you hit a rail, box, skier - it just blows out, which is wack, especially because its a dedicated park board and hitting shit is what you do all day in the park. i'd look at the k2 range. they're running shit at the mo. also stepchilds new zero camber boards are sweet.

    wat.

Dude the park pickle is great as a freeride board as well. I have no problem riding the street series in whatever conditions and that's even floppier than the pickle. Never encountered anyone with problems with the lack of metal on the nose/tail either.

Having said that I want this: http://www.romesnowboards.com/produc.../agent-rocker/ fucking amazing board.

In other news a landslide at Hotham took out the bottom of the village chairlift today. Kinda glad I left yesterday. Apparently it was raining so hard today that the bottom level of Hotham central was flooding. All this only a week after the best powder day I have ever had. Hmmm.

hmm..... the first day i rode my t.rice -my tail blew out after it got clipped by a skier - and i didn't get hit that hard either. dude i work with, his pickle looks like its been run over by a truck after 30 or so days riding in the park??!!

when i took the reverse camber out in the back country - it just didn't do it for me. mebbe i'm just used to the stable feeling of the cambered board.

True true. Contrary to common wisdom, I find reverse camber more stable at speed. Possibly to do with my lack of weight though.

Also is there any chance of me obtaining a pair of laces for Soloman snowboard boots from you guys? Mine have snapped on both boots. (not regular laces, the single lace per boot clip-in types)

umm - nope - don't carry any salomon stuff. but they the same peeps as adidas - so might be able to suss something. pm me with the model of the boots

and yeah - i am rocking 97 kg at the mo, so might have something to do with the stability

If anyone is familiar with Hotham, this is the bottom of Village chair on Sunday after the landslide on Saturday... Totally took out the ticket hut and forced a lift evac - heaps of peeps with hypothermia from being stuck on the lift for hours. Buller, Falls and Hotham-Harrietville roads are all closed from landslides and smashed trees. Threadbo village flooded as well. Crazy shit.

"Every one of them," Yossarian told him.
    "Every one of whom?"
"Every one of whom do you think?"
    "I haven't any idea."
"Then how do you know they aren't?"
"Because …" Clevinger sputtered, and turned speechless with frustration.

Has anyone had any experience using DC's Boa boots? As in the dial systems rather than laces?

My opinion regarding dial in/clip ins: I generally find it's easier to get a snug fit as you can get a lot more leverage and a more even tightness. However, they can break and it's harder to find replacements (I had to go to a camping store and buy some tent rope to repair mine.) than with regular laces. So I would look at getting a couple of spare laces with the boots.

    Several things I would offer.
-Don't go through an agency, try and go through the resort directly, you'll save a heap of cash.
-Go for a job that is not 9-5. You'll get minimal riding time. I did hotel reception and got about 4 full days riding a week thanks to afternoon shifts.
-Buy all your shit in Vancouver, if you get there in October/November, all the boardstores on west 4th avenue will have last season's stuff for what is usually around half price.
-Depending on the resort try and get there at least a week or so before you start work/training. Finding accom is a bitch as everyone is looking (unless they offer you staff accom). Usually places will want first and last month's rent + bond.
-Be prepared to supplement your income. You get paid shit fuck all, wages will cover food, accom and a bit of drinking.

PM me if you have any specific questions.

hmmm that's good advice =) i miss the boardstores on west 4th <3 You did a season at big white too hey? I would totally recommend that hill because you can live and work on the hill... if you're going for this season tho' you'd want to get your ass into action - they have a job fair in November which you can pretty much just turn up at and get a job

I worked night shifts too, which was awesome, but my manager would let me take 2 hour lunch breaks if it was an awesome powder day and i had to work a day shift.

and yes, take lots of savings and enjoy your time, don't get weighed down in earning fuck all cash - you're there to have fun

if you have more specific questions let me know.

Silverstar would be another recommendation, or revelstoke, but you'll struggle to get work at revvie on the mountain, but its an amazing hill.

I can't wait to get back to the mountains in Jan next year Miss my board already...

    Are you back Yossarin?

And Scotty: I know lots of peeps with those DCs who loved them! Way better than my stupid laces I reckon >=(

a big thumbs down for me, i like to have my boots tight in some places, loose in others, which you just can't do with the boa and replacing them are a nightmare.

i always go back to laces.
