blind guy @ the wall is a Maester. they're an order of philosopher/doctor/educator/historians that are trained at a citadel then serve for life as an advisor to a great house. each link on their belt (it's a necklace in the book) is forged from a different metal and represents the mastery of a different field of knowldge.

I started Season 4 a couple of days ago and I have two eps left... desperately looking out for season 5 now as dont want to have to go through withdrawals..

I've only read the first book, but if the others are written similarly, which I am led to believe they are, then I recommend you read 'em.
