as per others, seriously - why? i think its a completely arbitrary choice the parents should make together, as long as it has parents to love it unconditionally it barely even matters.

not sure if srs, but amyy is, so - no it isn't. even if they were married she's under no obligation to take his name, nor are the kids. if having the same last name is important to all of them for a sense of the family group, he could even take HER name, or they could make up a whole new name and change it together.

yes, it is a poor justification. it makes me grumpy because it says that the "tradition" of the father is more important than any reason the mother could have for wanting to pass on her own name. given relationships are meant to be, y'know, equal these days i think it's pretty poor form.

    kinda romantic all the same.

amyy it's really something they should decide between them surely? I don't think it should be assumed that kids automatically get their father's surname

    Agreed.

My sister's children aren't getting their father's last name but that is mostly because he is a deadshit that doesn't deserve the honour of passing it on.

Each to their own. She's made it quite clear that she is just being difficult about it.She reckons because her sister and mother have been there since day one, it should have their last name. Yet half her fb status are about her and my brother being the child's parents and that her family should just stay out of it.My brother is not a deadshit, so he doesn't deserve to not have his son continue on our family name. He's been there through all the ultrasounds, classes and buying everything for both his mrs and child. Personally I'm not saying this about "tradition", it's more the fact I think the child deserves to have our last name. It's hard to explain what type of person she is, but in sort she's kind of a cunt.

Reason kids traditionally have dads last name is beacause that's the mothers name through marriage. If you're going to be so forward-thinking as to have a kid without having first been through the religious rite, seems like either option is valid. While its cute that he attends classes, shell be raising the kid after pushing it through her vagina, so her effort pretty soundly trumps his. And that's still the case if she is a deadshit.Really for me though I'd just pick whixhever name was coolest. Or call my kid "snow" if he were born a bastard.

if her sister and mother have been there since day one, why shouldnt it have their last name? she is still allowed to want her family to butt out of parenting advice, the two are not mutually exclusive. your brother paying for classes and buying things doesn't mean he gets to put his name on it - it's his baby, these are kind of his basic responsibilities too?

obviously i'm only going off your last 3 posts on teknoscape (and you seem to be going off information on facebook...so maybe both our information could be better? :P) but it kind of sounds like you just don't like her as a person, so you think your brother should somehow be rewarded for being a better person, by having his son get the last name. which kind of makes it seem like it's just as much of a game as you say she is playing with it?

    btw this statement:

    Quote Originally Posted by Amyy

doesn't really cover the nuances of "i suspect in this specific instance, the mother may be using the last name thing as a tool to punish my brother, and because i believe my family has been/will be more involved with the baby's upbringing i believe it should be raised with my family's last name"

the point still stands that babies do not inherently get the father's last name just because the parents haven't split up yet

Seriously though, why should it matter whose last name the child will have. Both their names will be on the birth certificate, pretty sure that would be the most important thing of all. Names can be changed. Focus on the baby and loving it, not what it's last name will be. It's insignificant, IMO.

My answer last night was pretty hasty, mostly in part to being due to head out, but let me clarify if I may.

I can only comment on myself here, hence why I said IMO to begin with, but I know that if the situation arose where I was in the position of becoming a father, that I'd be putting in a hell of a lot of blood, sweat and tears to make sure my child was coming into the best possible family unit it could.

Yes, that means buying stuff, going to classes, painting nurseries, spending hours shopping for things, holding hands during labour, all that stuff. Yep, cliched list. Ok, I wouldn't be carrying the baby for 9 months, wouldn't need to push it out of my lady hole and as such wouldn't share the bond that mother and child inherently share.

I just think that if I was going to put as much effort and be as hands-on of a father as I suspect I will be, that I could at least have the privilege of my child carrying my surname if my relationship with it's mother went south. She will *always* be the childs mother and that is massive. The love of mother and child is definitely something else.

At the end of the day Heyu is right, it's about loving the child above all, and commenting on this reflects poorly on my carefully articulated never serious TS persona, shit.

The baby can easily change their surname by deed poll to their fathers later on.

The history of the modern, western surname is very interesting.

I encourage you all to have a look into it.

but she does deserve it because she is a deadshit?

you realise that you could continue on your families last name yourself, by giving your children your last name.

i feel like i die a little bit inside whenever one of my friends changes their last name.

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together

I said she was a cunt, not a deadshit. Besides being the occasional cunt, she's a nice person.

If I was in the same position, I would take my partners last name for the child's name so my last name wouldn't continue..

It really doesn't make a difference to me, I said to her, no matter what name it has its not going to be loved any less..

I just hate that she is doing it to be spiteful, thats what makes it wrong..

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

    Public opinion (1984)
2/3 of Americans labelled TV, clothes dryers, and aluminium foil as "necessities" rather than "luxuries you could do without"

In Australia, in 2003, 40% of people with household incomes over $70K said they didn't have enough for necessities

Wow, uni's teaching me i'll never have enough!
