Victorians were famous for mourning photography - in which the dead are posed as if they were “just sleeping” and photographed, creating an expensive memento mori that was often the only photograph a family would have of the deceased loved one.

However, there is a sub-genre of mourning photography, in which photographers clamp and pose the dearly departed in such a way that they look fully awake — usually standing up, eyes either held open by some unknown mechanism or with pupils painted over closed eyes.

The girl in the photo above is dead. If you look closely you can see a base behind the girl’s feet and a post would go up from that with clamps at the waist and neck and the clothing would be open at the back. The arms would have stiff wires running at the back to hold them in place. Also notice the strange placement of the hands. The pupils are painted on the closed eyelids.

Call me morbid, but I actually find this sort of stuff facinating.

hehe not morbid at all, it fascinates me too.. some creepy pics there!

it reminds me of a doco i watched a few years ago about mothers of still-borns and how some of them would take the dead baby home with them for a week to spend time with it, bath it and stuff.. found that really odd but they thought it helped the grieving mother come to terms with it all before saying goodbye..

    F-R-E-A-K-Y !!

The eyes painted onto the eyelids look a bit fucked up.....

I also wonder bout the smells.

Was it in the UK back in the day that used to have deceased bodies at home, and the family would come by and pay respects etc ?

i watched this doco where a lioness' cub was taken by a python. the lioness awoke to find her cub taken and a huge python nearby with a big guilty lump half way down. she attacked/chased the python into a cave where it disappeared. but the lioness camped out for days until the python re-appeared and as if they had discussed an 'agreement' to end the stand off, the python regurgitated the remains for the cub so the mother could recover her young and start the grieving process. They both went their seperate ways, and the Lioness as part of the grieving process cried with her semi digested dead cub for a night and then in the morning ate it. Pretty amazing to watch this, but pretty normal behaviour in the wild.

    Nature. WTF.
You're entering the vicinity of an area adjacent to a location, the kind of place where there might be a monster or some kind of weird mirror. These are just examples. It could also be something much better. Prepare to enter... The Scary Door.

it reminds me of a doco i watched a few years ago about mothers of still-borns and how some of them would take the dead baby home with them for a week to spend time with it, bath it and stuff.. found that really odd but they thought it helped the grieving mother come to terms with it all before saying goodbye..
They do this in the hospital from the start. The mother can dress the baby, wash it etc as it's meant to help with the grieving process. My sister has to deal with this A mother comes in and they know the baby has died and she has to be the midwife whilst they give birth to the still born. I can't imagine that kind of grief.
