Hah, I'm just in the picture/s. I attended the protest and my pic is on the net so I'm all famous n shit now.

I felt a great sense of peace being there. It angered me when the police officers loitering around mocked the girl holding the megaphone in the first pic under their breathes, especially considering it was apparently the first time she got up and spoke

    Good on you man!

    I wouldn't get angry.

I've known many cops in my life and not many of them end up happy.

Yeah, it felt good While my opinion is balancing out, these are the places I want to be, to find something in it....

Yeah, you're definitely right, but being a person who suffers from social anxiety, I just don't think our tax dollars should be going to loitering cops mocking someone who has the guts to stand up for what she believes in.

You need to channel that into sympathy for the cop.

There's a number of reasons you would be the kind of person who would do what he did, very few come down to 'just because' or 'paid industrialist shill'.

Here's some that you might want to think on next time you see this kind of thing:

    1) Raped as a child
    2) Beaten severely as a child.
    3) Lost close family members and didn't cope.
    4) Closet homosexual with no support in environment.
    5) Regularly scraping up brains off the road following car accidents.
    6) Regular exposure to issues #1 and #2 through work victims.
    7) Congenital brain disorder.
    8) Closet homosexual with no support in environment.
    9) Head trauma from car accident.
    10) Beaten severely as a child.

Think about your pal verstyle. He doesn't come out with the shit that he does because he is EVIL (though what he says often is), he does it because in certain places his brain just goes NYAAAAAARKKKKK.

also keep in mind stevie, just the act of training to become a cop trains you to treat people as "other". they have to "maintain order", so people become "out of order" (or in the case of protestors, no matter how peaceful, constantly in a state of "threatening-to-become-out-of-order" so they behave accordingly).

in addition to all the reasons MV listed, i honestly think most cops would go crazy if they didn't distance themselves from other human beings, and that's actually kind of tragic.

Imagine being a part of the apparatus for the domination and coercion of your countrymen.

You'd have to go sour pretty damn quick.

    http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/...s_writers.html
In an earlier episode from this season, “Remedial Chaos Theory,” Abed gives a quick breakdown of his cohorts: “Annie will always be driven, Shirley will always be giving, Pierce will never apologize, Britta’s sort of a wild card for me…” Which is true. Her character has become noticeably rudderless as of late, and it’s not clear just why that is.
Initially, Britta’s character could be distilled into one word: buzzkill. Thankfully, the show’s writers have found, in episode after episode, ever more creative and elaborate ways for characters to tell Britta just how much they hate her: It’s the show’s most consistent running joke, and the writers have not done her any favors in the way of making her empathetic, sympathetic, or even likeable. Instead, they have established her as the least funny, most divisive character in the show’s cast of delinquents.
....Given the show’s liberal audience demographic, perhaps these stereotypes hit a little too close to home for all involved. At least that would help explain some of the inconsistencies in her character—as well as the sour taste left in the mouths of many Community fans at the end of every Britta-centered storyline.

Sydney to M E L B O U R N E is one of the the busiest air routes in the world, so it isn't really that offensive to suggest a trainline go in instead. Give it a few more years and Perth suburbia/Joondalup line will reach Geraldton anyway.

I didn't quite understand "future funds". Would that literally just be putting money aside in the treasury like a savings account for hard times or something?

look up federal funding for the perth to mandurah line - compare it to federal funding for 6 odd km of line in sydney. hint 6 odd km of line in sydney gets far more. when the mining boom has been exhausted they wont even have the reminder that we have cash they can pillage, sort of like old folk in a retirement home whove given the kids the last of their savings and now wait in vain for a visit.

@ stevie.what they are proposing is that a percentage of the cash from the boom is parlayed into long term investments with a continuing cash return - instead of jus t tax and spend. an excellent idea as when all the little rocks that can be dug up have been, you just havnt blown a bonanza in one generation as we are pretty much hell bent on doing.

trouble with it is keeping politicians dirty rotten little cuntscratchers off it. as happened to the last futures fund.

But apparently there is more than enough stuff to be dug up for ever.

Failing to address, of course, that the system set up to profit most from its exploitation isn't the people of Australia, Western Australia, or the myriad of nations destroyed by colonisation.

No, we get trickle-down, nation-building claptrap, somehow supposed to appease the permanent removal and destruction of vast tracts of what used to be referred to as sovereign land and the wondrous diversity of life it once supported.

Pardon my cynicism Al, but no future fund is going to pay for the regeneration of open-cuts, strip-mines, super-pits, clear-cuts, chain-clears, salt-pans, dust-bowls, dead-zones, drift-nets, ghost-nets, oil-spills, dynamited reefs, dried rivers and drained aquifers. Not to mention the newer horrors of fracturing, cloud-seeding and genetic manipulation of food.

So, fuck the long-term investments with cash return. It will all get swallowed up in politics and administration anyway. It always does.

No, what we need is a now-fund. Immediate spending on ecological and community regenerative, repairing and healing projects, where the returns we will see is in the health of people and their environment.

Well that's pretty hard to comment on, as WA may have had other funding given to it from the Feds where NSW didn't.

My main point was that it's completely reasonable for an environmental group to want to look into a train line along one of the busiest air corridors in the world. Australia must currently have one of the worst long distance train services in the first world, it's hardly an offensive proposal.

The iron ore in the ground is just as much Mahmoud's living in Paramatta as it is yours. Also what happens when the mining boom ends? Does WA then decide they want their fair share of whatever the next major economy driver is in the rest of Australia after keeping everything to themselves for x years?

The independent body that oversees the distribution of GST funds will rebalance the pay sheet, and theoretically, WA will get a larger slice of the pie, and instead of funds heading over east, some of them will head back to WA. Much like now, because NSW, Vic and everyone except QLD, does fuck all mining, they get a larger slice of that pie. When the boom is over, and the economy settles down again, it will be redistributed accordingly.

You'd be pretty happy with the $1 billion from the carbon tax that the Government is directing to biodiversity and wildlife corridors then.

    Yes, its wonderful!

Funding works out to be 20 cents per hectare per year for the continent, and the regional funding allotments will be one new staff position each.

So, it looks good in the headlines, but doesn't really add up to a whole lot and will need to be extremely carefully spent, with great attention to strategic usages.

On the face of it, its a welcome and hopeful start, with many caveats.

I imagine he would be a lot happier if we stopping giving subsidies to coal and gas fired power plants. Think about the mental gymnastics required to say "We want to put a price on pollution, and move Australia towards a clean energy future. Bee Tee Dub, coal industry, here is several billion dollars. christine milne has drawn up a petition calling for the text of the TPPA to be made public:

The Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) is a trade agreement being negotiated between Australia, the USA, New Zealand, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. Japan, Canada and Mexico are also considering joining.

As a far-reaching trade agreement expected to put in place frameworks on critical issues for many years to come, the TPPA could result in significant changes to Ausralia's domestic laws in many areas including intellectual property, health and agriculture, to name just a few.

We don’t exactly know because the negotiations are secret and the only documents that are in the public domain have been leaked, and they are very worrying indeed.

Worse still, the nine governments, including Australia, have agreed that none of the background documents will be released until four years after the negotiations. As a result the public is being denied the opportunity to debate the merits of the TPPA, and to hold their government accountable.

Australians deserve to know what our government is trading in our name. Sign the petition calling on the Prime Minister and Trade Minister Emerson to release the TPPA text to the public

I can't grasp how a government that is supposedly responsible and accountable to a population they supposedly represent, can conduct secret negotiations of such wide-ranging and long-term import and be supported by the people.

Just who is supposed to benefit from international trade? If the details are kept secret from the Australian people until years afterwards, the situation begs the question; how much longer can this farcical facade of representative governance be maintained? Why do we stand for it?

Modern international trade is an efficient and monumental transfer of sovereign resources to irresponsible and largely unaccountable transnational interests.

Look at the politicians who are making these decisions, and negotiating these secret deals. Look at their backgrounds, and look, historically, what they do after they leave politics.

Why people continue to just accept this I will never know.

    this.
The problem with the world is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself

    amazing shot!
11:49 PM: Several hundred NYPD are gathering in the park, assumably to admit defeat and engage in violent repression. You were warned, NYPD.

    sorry, i am still bumping

6th day of #omel court proceedings. the M E L B O U R N E city council lawyer is now presenting his case, and justice north is interacting with him questioning his argument (basically, that enforcing 'camping' bylaws does not impede protest action).

    (from livetweeters in courtroom)

North: "If it rains - I have been told - you get wet. And then there's no more protest."
North: Occupy movement is unique in that ongoing presence in public spaces is core to political message
North: (occupying) is a particularly inventive form of protest. Seems that MCC is presenting a value judgement
