Default Sample Sources/ Crate Digging Appreciation.

What it says in the title. Did a quick search and didn't come up with anything. Previously I've just posted them in the listening thread or multi genre mix thread.

Hear a good original tune that has been sampled in another track, whack it in. Hear a good mix of original sample sources, do the same. I quite enjoy the film samples and the likes as well, so I think they should be included.

    Fake Blood Used Series

I've done 4 x 1 hour mixes (and a 5th is in the pipeline), solely made up of old tunes sampled in classic Hip Hop tracks - but cut up on two copies / decks to re-create the loops / chops people used.
I didn't use any compilations, reissues, bootlegs, or downloads. All originals. I've always been a digging fiend on the side!
But - to save the original pressings (and also cos it's hard enough to get one copy of some of these, let alone two!) - I loaded them into Serato vinyl, so I could scratch away to my heart's content, with ruining anything!
    So here's VOL.1.
    Further volumes to follow...
    Enjoy...

    http://soundcloud.com/fake-blood/fake-blood-used-vol-1

Find the rest of them here. Currently up to 6.

Questlove from the roots, sample lesson mix from radio 1. No dl, sorry.

Killa man, hey I tried using the sampler in sl3. I loaded some fight club samples off some dodgy site. Thing is I put them into the library and it didn't play so well. It Carried on like a Chip monk sample.

Is it because the sample rate was low? As in minimum 320 kb per second?

Sample rate is different to bit rate. Never used the sampler in serato. Could be sample rate tho. I've had it before when doing video editing putting a 44 khz track into a project with 48 khz sample rate audio. I dunno. Check properties of file.

Not in spirit of thread, imo. Didn't even sample them from the film yourself tut tut, haha.

Check this out. Love UNKLE's film samples

There is a really cool video of Naik, i think, and another local artist doing a challenge of making a track for 10 bucks. You see them go buy some records and how they sample it and use it. Was awesome. Can't find it tho .

It's crazy what the early guys did and all the while being told "there just stealing other peoples music and taking the credit". Love the inside cover of shadows endtroducing vinyl which I have manage to lose, fool.

    Yes indeed.

I am a massive geek for this kind of stuff, just bought 7 DVD's of drum breaks from a collector for $140. Mostly because I make hip-hop, but also because I love samples haha.

Didn't realise how heavily daft punk sample, until a little sample source series on palms out a few years ago.

i would consider you a geek if you pulled out some old ozzy christian record from a charity shop in the hills and sampled some sick drum break no one has heard berfore.

sampling off mp3s/digital files where you dont own the OG album is pretty weak in my opinion.

@Vito.-... also not having a go at ya mate. But you owe it to yourself to listen to the originals in their true format & dig a little in the crates. Online makes it very easy and you can ID samples quickly. I started digging for samples in the later part of the 90s ... in the beginning i started off with more staple bits like james brown / roy ayers and over time i headed off on tangents with different sounds/artists/labels/countries. even now i am still learning / discovering so much music & loving the musical journey....and the best part is that this journey will go on for the rest of my life

if u just pull out some digital file you kinda miss the whole experience and appreciation for the original song / LP.

    my 2 cents worth!!

Mate, I totally agree with you. I do my share of digging and much prefer taking breaks off records. I used to have a pretty extensive sample collection on my pc but got rid of it all to start fresh buying vinyl. Some of the records I buy I don't even listen to first, as they are from french collectors selling on eBay and that kind of thing, great for finding new artists. Some of them can be stinkers but 9 times out of 10 you find something great to use. I planned on putting these DVD's to use to pull out one-shot samples (lot of work listening through them all and chopping I'm sure you'll agree) to bolster other dug treasures. Started off the same as you, picking up rings that have been sampled to death. The beauty is no-one flips a sample the same!

I admit it's cheating, getting those DVD's, but the opportunity was too good to pass up for an extensive drum library in .wav. If it's good enough for M-Phazes it's good enough for me!

P.s my reference to geekiness was moreso sample i.d's and shit..not being a dude who found the urban legend Kamahl drum break in a good sammies in gosnells haha

Haha I was just questioning relevance to thread. I'd use the digital ones as you already got them. Probably just open in audacity to sort any problems. I bought a scratch mp3 off beat port to use with traktor. I am no one to talk.

But would I find it cooler if you used some random film that I never heard or was really old and abstract, that not everyone used, of course but that's what I enjoy. Most people like what they know.

I shall still listen to the mix and no doubt enjoy. Love fight club and, i'm assuming, liquid or techy minimal dnb.

oh its starts off liquid - then goes harder. Im yet to record it without fucking it up!!

BUT also trying to make a Nextmen style mix starts off dubstep then to glitch then house then tech house then dnb. rather than finding some epic intros to match between genres I just want to mash it up with a vocal SAMPLE & piece the genres together (cheats way)

Recipe for tasty donuts is a good one...all the original tracks dilla used to make donuts mix tape. you should be able to find it online but if not let me know and I'll upload it somewhere. I've also got a DJ shadow original samples album but the names all got corrupted to be random letters and numbers during HD transfer which kinda defeats the point but I can upload as well if anyone's interested.

MPC era is 13 bucks for the CD and FLAC download on djshadow.com!! 14 bucks for shipping of the CD mind you haha. Love being able to get lossless straight from an artists website though. Not that that's much in the spirit of the thread but I do haha.

I did some digging with Shadow for ten minutes, well I asked if he left any good stuff then he said yes and pulled me out a load of records to listen to. I think he was on a rockabilly vibe that day, still fun none the less.
