We are conjuring an experience... a frolic into subtle states of a musical mind, where you are free to indulge in imagination and submit to the strange...

Unless you’ve been trapped in a misty, moss-shrouded terrarium for the past few weeks, you should be well aware by now of This Is Nowhere – the exciting new music event for Perth that has been brewing from the depths of the lifeisnoise office.

Happening on October 14 at the Somerville Auditorium, the Dolphin Theatre and surrounds on the campus of the University of Western Australia, This Is Nowhere will be a day of weird and wonderful sounds from home and from afar – and we are ready to divulge to the masses our electrifying Dolphin Theatre Announcement.

The Dolphin Theatre is going to be transformed into a deranged discotheque of sorts, where punters will be at one with the artists on the stage and the whole building will be buzzing with the beats of local and international party makers.

With our friends at the I Can't Stand Still Collective as our co-curators we are proud to announce that playing in the Dolphin Theatre as part of This is Nowhere 2012 will be the following artists:

We are conjuring an experience... a frolic into subtle states of a musical mind, where you are free to indulge in imagination and submit to the strange…


This Is Nowhere will be held in the surroundings of the Somerville Auditorium, Dolphin Theatre and adjoining Lawrence Jackson Court at The University of Western Australia, between midday til 10pm.




Based on the floor plan of a Gothic cathedral and inspired by a gentleman called William Somerville’s travels through untouched primeval forests back in 1927, the Somerville Auditorium, previously only used for the Perth International Arts Festival film season and RTRFM’s In The Pines festival, is the idyllic venue for music lovers to hear weird and wonderful live sounds from near and afar.



Named for the loveable underwater mammals that often frolic in the waters of the Matilda Bay foreshore, The Dolphin Theatre opened for use in 1976 and has never before been used as a dance party space. Local party makers the I Can't Stand Still Collective (ICSSC) alongside life is noise have programmed something special for The Dolphin - and will give it more of a club feel, just for one day.




The Lawrence Jackson Court is the area on the campus between The Dolphin Theatre and Octagon Theatre. This will be a great place to grab a drink and some food and will be the home of our Inglorious Buskers...

2012 will see the doors of sonic perception in our city burst open by way of a shiny new music event, This Is Nowhere, where you are invited to indulge in the subterranean sounds of artists from home and afar.

Music lovers of many varieties will be treated to an audible buffet of musicians and performers – some familiar, some foreign; some underground and some more surface-inclined; to those you can sit peacefully and listen to and those others – who will make you want to dance.

The setting for This Is Nowhere has been carefully selected to enhance the already enchanting sounds of the line-up. Feast your ears on tasty tunes in a clearing beneath a canopy of pines, where the light only dapples, to a theatre where the audience is one with the acts on stage, and a courtyard full of giant manmade
mushrooms.

Under 18’s are not invited, which means you’re free to wander with drink-in-hand. Delicious and affordable food and beverage merchants will ensure no one goes empty-stomached (or empty-pocketed). There will be plenty of toilets; lots of parking and public transport options; plus a plethora of fun things to do. Capacity is limited so everyone will have enough room for their own uninterrupted experience.

A party of like-minded music lovers will surround you, and your musical experience is all that matters. Taking place at the Somerville Auditorium, Lawrence Jackson Court and Dolphin Theatre on the campus at UWA, we have the first of two announcements ready for your hot hands. The Dolphin Theatre line up is on its way, but for now, let us satiate your thirst by letting you in on the secrets of the Somerville and Lawrence
Jackson Court.

We are very pleased to announce the addition of two very exciting acts to the This is Nowhere 2012 line up: Japanese psych pop outfit, TENNISCOATS and the American prog-folk weirdness of HOLY SONS.




TENNISCOATS
Saya’s simplistic, childlike vocals mirror the sing-song delivery of contemporary Satomi Matsuzaki (Deerhoof), yet the cartoon pop world that Tenniscoats inhabit is unparalleled. All Aboard! is another triumph from the idiosyncratic duo. – The Music


The thoughtfulness and deliberation that has gone into appropriating their individual mix of musical flavours flows through their music like lemon and honey and will have audiences smiling endlessly when Tenniscoats take to the Somerville stage at This is Nowhere.


With pure sweetness, Saya and Ueno bring the unique sound of Tenniscoats to Australia for This is Nowhere. Known for working with equally as eccentric artists as The Pastels and Satomi from Deerhoof, the sound of Tenniscoats is almost indescribable. They have mastered a unique take on pop music over more than a decade of amazing output. Combining childlike vocals with otherworldly instrumentation, the 2012 release of ‘All Aboard!’ sees the addition of an infectious pop element infused with hypnotic guitar and a dreamlike feel - a combination ideal for an afternoon groove.

What's most impressive about Survivalist Tales is how Amos has tightened things up and added new elements without losing an iota of Holy Sons' adventurous spirit and sublimely textured aesthetic. – Blurt Online


Emil Amos is Holy Sons. Since arriving initially during the early 90’s home recording boom, he has appeared and disappeared again over the course of 9 solo records, producing the records alone while playing every instrument and often avoiding the task of promoting himself. Over the course of 20 years this approach has brought a hard-earned cult listenership built on word of mouth and an intense trust formed completely away from hype-building machinery. Holy Sons’ minimalist avant-folk sound journeys through formats as varied as dub, church-hymn, slow-jam and tape-collage; deconstructing virtually any genre with a spontaneous punk spirit. The music twists classic songwriting musicology into various corridors of self-analysis and experimentalism, documenting a constantly evolving songwriter who possesses a unique gift for distinctive creations across multiple artistic formats. Outside of Holy Sons, Emil has two other globally renowned bands: ‘Om’ (Drag City), and ‘Grails’ (Temporary Residence/Important Records) and has performed collaboratively with the likes Jandek, Damo Suzuki, Scout Niblett and Yellow Swans.

We regret to announce that Salva has had to cancel his appearance at This Is Nowhere. To be fair though, if we were invited to collaborate with Kanye West, we would probably cancel all other plans too.


In his stead, we are fortunate enough to have secured DRO CAREY, a 19-year-old Sydney producer who is slowly but surely taking over the blogosphere with online soundcapes and video creations throughout his Tumblr (BrainSoSoft) and Vimeo (DC Vampira) accounts. With releases on labels Ramp, Hum + Buzz and Trilogy Tapes, and producing music which explores complex and mature themes, it's hard to believe that Dro Carey (real name Eugene Hector) is relatively fresh out of high school.

Hector's musical experimentation began at age 13 with a desire to make conventional hip-hop beats, until an interest in producers such as El-B and Jeff Mills took over, leading to an almost accidental foray into dance music. Nowadays, Dro Carey's music is dark and uneasy yet extraordinarily intriguing, combining everything from rap, juke and tripped out R&B to old school house and techno resulting in a sound comparable to Hype Williams.
