I pretty much got nothing aside from a heated discussion I had at a party the other weekend with a guy Oz born but background Croatia or Slovakia or something. Hairdressers are not cheap (ie cut/dry roughly $65 dye is $100+) , I doubt people who need money so desperately they need to beg would have perfectly kept roots.

My concern is that there are people who genuinely need substance/psychological/monetary help and there are people who take advantage and ruin it for those who really do need help. There are known professional beggars and I am making comment on those people.

without taking the time to think about the issue in any real detail, i'd say many people will see the pink hair and phone and the begging cup, and think wtf.

it's good that people at least voice these views so you know the perception you're needing to try and break through. it's worse when people just ignore the issue, you can't even begin to fight the stigma if you don't know what you are working with!

How to change it? Force these karnts to spend some time on the streets. Even just talk to homeless (or watch them on a screen if it's too confronting) - and not just one or two but enough to grasp the spectrum of issues.

there are many reason MSV. many homeless are actually not poor but mentally ill and not allowed to live at home. they often come from wealthy families who have turned their back on them or just dont know how to cope. I had one such friend exactly like this. He used to come out of graylands and not tell his parents. He used to get an allowance and it would build up whilst he was in graylands, then he would spend it on stupid stuff when he first got out.

Mentally ill often 'drift' as living anywhere they think they are being controlled/locked up. That guy that died when he was tazered over east was from a rich family and had access to money/funds/resources if he wanted to but chose to steal simply because interacting with someone at the till was too much for him. I have no idea how someone who had 'nice dyed hair' was homeless, but she was. She was begging on the street, had no shame in doing so and that is enough for me.

Sure you can make money begging, but the fact they are begging is enough for me to feel they are in a bad place. It is not a proud thing to do. I would be sure these ppl were in minority.
