Roffle, you walked right into that one Neph!

HML, I've been a fisho for years, it's in my blood.

I used build the rods, (still do anyone up for a custom rod?) I sold the gear, I did the time, it's a hobby, and pretty good one too...

It's nothing to do with being macho....

what happens to the horse when it can't race anymore?
what about horses who get injured in races?
if they were racing would they have been injured (and ultimately killed)?

    when horses cant race anymore:

mares(females) - if they have been successful, they are often serviced (mated) by a stallion (male) in an effort to produce another horse. the care shown by the mother to its new born is something to behold

stallions(males with balls) - they service many mares a season, which id suggest they would enjoy....wouldnt any guy???

geldings(males without balls) & unsuitable mares are either sold or given to people who can use and care for them as they wish. some become police horses, others move onto other less gruelling sports (such as hacking and show-jumping) and some just lead a life of luxury on a farm somewhere

no himtmon they are not just shot in the head after they retire from racing

when a horse is injured in a race:

most injuries that occur while racing are easily fixed with rest and rehabilitation, and most do return to racing.

and in response to ya last comment.....

injuries can occur anywhere, and a horse is only put to rest only if an injury is untreatable.

HML is the problem you have with male masculinity and the need to hunt (which is in our genes and without it nobody would be here today), or is the problem with animal cruelty.

If its about animal cruelty, you obviously haven't been to an abattoir, or been the person who rams the pole through the cows head.

Killing animals isn't fun, and to be perfectly blunt, it's a sad by product of hunting. Most people who hunt or fish realise what they are doing and don't actually get much fun out of the killing of an animal. You do whatevers in your power to make sure that the animal doesn't suffer. you do it because especially with bow hunting or fly fishing, you're doing you upmost to dissapear and see the animal in it natural state, and when fishing, fool it into beleiving that the peice of fur and feather you've just chucked at it is a tasty morsel. It's the ultimate con job.

I don't expect you to understand straight, as it's a little bit of an obtuse point.

Catch and release fishing is little more aggrovation than being frisked by the cops, if you do it correctly.

I don't like killing animals, but if I want to eat, I will.

Both, depends on what kind of water I'm near...

I dont really get much chance to go whip the water to foam these days, but when I do, it's usually salt...

The only downer is that perth is always so damn windy!

I want to know from all the seasoned fisherpeople out there where do you think is the best spot to catch a decent feed? Preferrably in the metro to mandurah area.

I love fishing, but have become tired of getting all geared up only to catch 3/8 of fuck all. We have a boat in mandurah, not a deep sea job (4.75M), but I've taken it to rotto so its not too bad.

Lately have mostly been fishing around Dawesville/Mandurah, perhaps the most fished out place on the earth. I guess that is the problem.

I understand that good spots need to be kept a secret, so Im not going to run off and tell the whole local fruit and veg market staff about it. Like wise Im not the sort of person to fill up the esky with fish and put a years supply of fillets into the deep freeze.

Anyone know how the cockburn sound area is these days?

When I was down south the other week (nornalup), there were black bream on the river like you wouldn't believe. In a week I probably caught 50 odd, but only kept 5 (
all size) for a feed one night.

The rig is a rod or handreel, with a running sinker. smallish hooks, with river prawns as bait, hooked through the head (they strike the head first).

    too bloody easy.

There are a few good spots in rockingham......Long point being one of them......plenty of herrring, some tailor and during summer time Bonito.

Used to get pretty busy down there so we would walk away from the crowds to the tip.......the walk would take about 30 min but the tailor were so much bigger.

Anyway i did get together some gear, not so long ago and had a whirl at fishing one night with a friend..but caught nothing..nudda...zip.

maybe i need to give it another go and actually find out where people fish in the metro area..if not it's back down to rockingham jetty to a place i also know well and love.

As for eating fish....fresh is the only way to go, as i get a small reaction to un fresh fish...eg throat swells and feels like i have a bone stuck in my throat....bizzare tis same as my mum..So yeh to fresh fish on the barbee with some lemon and black pepper..*drools*

As a kid I'd spend many nights fishing in Rocko but mostly on the Safety Bay jetty..shit I can even remembering sleeping on that thing once..caught a massive stingray.. Kwinana beach is a good spot for tailor other than that u really need a boat to catch anything worth taking home to cook..

Hmm now come to think of it........the rocky jetty is the one infront of the yatch club?? near the board walk thing??

and the safey bay one is further around...it has a little deli on the corner??

The safety bay one is heaps better to fish off...the end bit is concrete??

Hmm must go down there for a visit and refresh the old memory....

When my friend and I were in QLD about 5 years ago she caught an eel.
This was funny because Francine loves the feel of the slippery eel.

Good old Nornalup inlet ... soon to be banned from Recreational activities of all sorts by our stupid State Government. The reason for doing so would astound the general public, but I'm not going to get into it on here.

Good to hear you put most of your fish back YiPPii, although 5 is over the daily limit (it's now 4). What sizes were the ones you kept? Just some advice for next time you're down that way, or decide to keep Bream to throw in the pan:

    * 27-32cm are the best sizes to keep as far as flesh taste goes (with 25cm being the legal minimum). Why? Because the larger fish are old and their flesh tastes like shit (Black Bream over 30-35cm can be 15-20 years old). Fish of this size and over should be put back by default because Bream don't start breeding until they're that big/old.

If you want a challenge (and bulk loads more fun) next time you're fishing for Bream, try using hard bodied lures (minnow type). The Bream go off on lures, fight a heap harder, and once you get it all sussed you'll consistently catch bigger fish (which you cna then safely put back )

3 Black Bream in a livewell during a midnight fish in the Swan River. Smallest one is about 27-28cm, middle fish about 35cm and the larger one between 40-42cm. That one went about 1.3kg

yeah all the ones I caught were around 27-30 cm, didn't know about the daily limit though, but I was there for a week so that's less than one a day!

Not the best tasting fish in the world regardless, the flesh is a little muddy.

I'll try that lure idea next time I'm down there...

I caught a couple of herring too, even 5km into the inlet, what's a good rig for them?

some of the best tasting fish is redfin. redfin are actually a vermin fish so they're usually only found in dams but they taste well good when bbq'd.

Nah no shit. If you cook them up in lemon, butter and herbs (or similar) and BBQ in foil or grill them) they are really, really fucking nice. mmm, coral trout .... still to this day the best fish I have ever tasted

YiPPii: Muddy taste... very possible given their food source and surroundings down there. They'll taste differently from Bream from the Swan, or Moore river, etc. Down south they feed more on big mussel racks and small invertebrae, where-as the Swan River, Moore river etc. have more baitfish and juvenile fish (tailor, herring, tarwhine, etc) thus giving them a cleaner taste. I haven't eaten Bream for over a year (can't bring myself to kill them anymore) but when I used to cook them, I just lightly floured them and put them straight into the pan. I leave them in there while I pick off the flesh and eat them with a decent white vinegar and some bread. Don't freeze Bream, you'll nullify the taste completely.

    Tailor are everyhwere apparently!

Blowies suck, especially this time of year. They seem to breed in plague proportions, even when you use lures, the suckers still go for it, they even eat the ends off soft plastics. We stacked about 30 on the Jetty once, after an hour we threw them back (thinking they were dead) and they swam away.

Many years ago before that stoopid sand bar got too big and consumed most of the Safety Bay water near the Yacht Club...that was a wickid little fishing spot..
I use to take a dingy out and set up camp on that sand bar when it was only a baby mountain of sand in the ocean.. I havn't been there for a few years but from my understanding the sand bar has screwed up that entire part of the beach....One night I caught about 10 huge Gardies, 3 large Tailor, 4 massive Skippy & threw back plenty of Herring (didn't want to be too greedy) lol

We need to collectively admit that we’re not fine. We’re not confident and balanced and good. We turn up to work every day pretending we’re not neurotic and obsessed and insatiable and full of doubt. And we waste so much energy keeping up this mutual pretence for each other because we think if people saw the truth, if people really knew what was going on in your head, all the crazy truth of your dark appetites and self-loathing, then you’d get rejected.

But, in fact, the opposite is true. It’s when we dare to reveal the truth that we unwittingly give everyone else permission to do the same. To stop holding their breath for a moment and actually come into the room. To be here, present, vulnerable and authentic.
