Glad I didn't do this tour in the end, especially after a lil Byrdie said, let it be. In fact I actually feel quite vindicated and happy after this NZ/OZ tour ended up in other promoters hands. It was NZ and OZ that all this controversy really began, including his poor choice of jumpers!

i think the only real person it'd reflect poorly on was him as long as you stated you didn't know it'd be like this and you dont support it etc.

^ Notice how the CDJ he is touching has no lights on :P

I've pretty much only know Printer Jam, & like that and the video clip.

I think as a producer that's rised too fast in the scene, and freaked out under the pressure. No excuse though. Interested to find out if this breaks him, or makes him stronger.

I hope he wasn't faking then as well but from what I hear he's been doing it for over a year now. Even his fellow companions at Hospital have been having a go at him.

Ah well, maybe he'll learn a lesson this time.
i remember watchin from the balcony a number of times and it didnt look like he was doin much and what he did didnt really make sense

This thread seems to have missed the point for the most part. In my humble opinion, and I know there are people who agree with me, there is nothing more boring and idiotic than standing around watching what a DJ is doing all night, as though they are some kind of musician ('trainspotting' as someone already called it). If I see or hear a DJ doing something new or interesting I might take a quick peek at what's going on, but generally DJing is one of the most over-rated things a person can lay claim to doing. A DJ is there to play music for people to dance to and have a good time, not to be studied and evaluated as though they're creating a lasting work of art, as though they're doing something that actually matters in the grand scheme of things...

If Mistabishi could play pre-recorded mixes and get away with it, whether he was doing it for shits and giggles or whether he was actually trying to hide something, then all the best to him. To me, his only crime lies in that he was stupid enough to get caught out.

Edit: Oh, and his choice of jumpers.

I couldnt disagree any more, if you think that dj'ing is one of the most overrated things a person can claim to do, and that is doens't matter to shit in the grand scheme of things, then you are a complete half wit who musn't understand anything about music.
The difference between a good dj and a bad one, or one who fakes it for that matter, is huge. It is a skill and it takes a lot of dedication and hard work to get good at. Some producers who admit they cannot dj, at least use ableton or vitual dj style programs to have some input by them into the set (Randomer for example).
Mistabishi is a twat and a fraud if he plays one mixed cd and pretends to be changing records the whole time.

Poor guy has just lost the passion. I get excited mixing songs in my room by myself. And everyone gets a "buzz" when you nail a hard mix in front of your mates,

oh well, plently of willing dnb djs to step up and fill his shoes.

That's the thing though. Peter Hook & Mistabishi don't even do that, they just put a CD with a full mix on. Peter Hook is a legend, he didn't even make the mix....it was from a mix CD from the cover of Mix mag hahaha.

The point is that it really doesn't make any difference. If the sound coming out of the speakers is exactly the same, who cares what the DJ's doing. If they want to make their own job boring by playing a mix cd and they think they can get away with it so be it. If you weren't standing around studying the DJ's every move like hawks it wouldn't actually make any difference to your night, and you'd probably have a better time for it.

would you feel ripped off if you went to see a band and they just plugged into amps that werent turned on while the demo cd they recorded in the drummers parents garage played?

Of course. That's exactly what I said previously. A DJ is not a musician, not by a long stretch. Unless you're talking about a turntablist maybe, but that's a different ballpark.

What if the crowd gets bored of that CD, do we like......stop the music and change it?

Yes, it's the most over rated skill a human can ever learn. The point is, people are there to watch a performance...no matter how lame you may think it is... thousands of people go out to watch misc DJ's all around the world every weekend with the understanding that they will be seeing some kind of live manipulation of music, as lame as that may or may not be. When this is not what they receive they get annoyed. Nothing much more to it, this is just how things work.

PS: I agree with you here, they aren't musicians. But this particular skill set is used for music performance, and no matter how much you want to pigeon hole every DJ...some are fucking skilled at it. I think people feel cheated because he was trying to palm it off as if he was actually DJing properly.

Of course he was trying to palm it off as though he was DJing, it wouldn't go down very well if he didn't.

Yeah I hear you though, some DJ's are super skilled and deserve every bit of credit they get. It's an odd phenomenon indeed, that people get so worked up about something like this. I guess that's what Peter Hook is satirising with his DJ sets. I wasn't trying to pigeon-hole every DJ as being a useless twat, I was just saying the job in general gets a lot more attention than it deserves (which you seem to agree with), to the extent that people let something as trivial as the way in which the DJ chooses to play his music ruin their entire evening.

By the way, I work as a professional DJ too.

I used to be like that, now I just prefer to hear good tunes.

What's better:

a) DJ who is technically awesome on the tables, but lacks good song selection and can't key match
or
b) DJ who cheats a bit, but puts together an absolutely bangin mix

I'd choose b, especially if the DJ actually produces tunes.
