GO Has Touched Down

Posted by: Glen  |  Date:  16 August, 2011  |  Tags:   |  No comment

For over Ten Years now Giuseoppe Ottaviani has been a part of Paul Van Dyk’s Vandit family and after recently cutting a swathe of GO’s live destructive power across Australia, the man returns with the release of GO ON AIR, a 20 track compilation themed on his successful radio show.

With so many compilation albums bouncing around the airwaves GO ON AIR is a cut above the competition and GLEN CANNING had the opportunity to share some q & a with GO himself, fresh from his successful Australian tour.

I had the pleasure of watching you play here in Perth only a few weeks ago and it was one of the best sets I’ve ever seen – absolutely breathtaking. Although the stage set up wasn’t ideal how is playing to a smaller but passionate crowd compare to thousands at a festival?

While playing for big festivals like Stereosonic in Australia let you feel more like a “rock star” than a DJ since you play on a big stage in front of so many people, playing in small clubs has definitely a different feeling. You cannot really compare and cannot say what’s the best because it’s a totally different thing. I love to play for small crowd in a small clubs since I can feel closer to them and I can actually stay even “too much” close to them as you noticed in Perth J But the great thing is that they can watch you and see what I do while I’m playing and how the sound changes when I touch all my controllers and keyboards. It’s cool and most of the time every one is a real fan and knows everything about the artist. That’s what I love the most to be honest.

It has been a simple but extremely effective marketing tool but how did GO come about?

“GO” stands for Giuseppe Ottaviani of course. It’s likely a cool word to play around and you can play a lot with it as you can see from my GO ON AIR radio show and compilation. The thing is, Giuseppe Ottaviani, which is my real, Italian, and “long” name, it’s not that easy to pronounce and above all to spell it correctly so I like to make it easier and spread around my initials “GO”. So……let’s GO!

You launched GO On Air 5 months ago, how has it been received across the globe?DSC 7651 234x300 GO Has Touched Down

The show gained a very good response since the beginning and this is why we decided to make the compilation just after few months of its start. It’s a monthly radio show where I play a selection of music that I really like. Sometime it doesn’t represent 100% my personal sound and style but I play just what I like the most from the music around and I love to share that music with my audience.

The new GO Compilation was released on July 22nd and I’m listening to it right now and I’ve got to say it is really impressive! How did you go about choosing what tracks were going to appear on the album?

It was hard to choose to be honest since I had a huge selection of good music but then I picked up just what I consider to be the best, at least for me. But I didn’t want to limit myself to just mixing the tracks together and I remixed and reworked most of the tracks I’ve used, including two brand new tracks from myself. Also I tried to make a kid of trip, from the beginning (take off) to the end (landing) mixing the track together in a very smooth way and you can understand what I mean only if you listen to the whole album. Some track is just 1:30 minutes long and it make sense only if you listen what’s before and after that part which is short but really intense and that I consider to be important as all the other tracks.

With eight of the twenty tracks either yours or remixes of yours, it truly is a representation of not only what music you like but also your own music which is quite different to many compilations out there that are just a collection of other people’s tunes. Was this a conscience decision that you made, ensuring the release was a true representation of your sound?

Correct! As I said above I didn’t want to just mix tracks, I wanted something that can represent my sound as well. I am a musician more than a DJ and I always tend to re-make tracks that I like in order to personalize them as much as I can. So the decision of making so many exclusive remixes and reworks has been the key of this compilation and I’ll keep doing this way for the future compilations too as I want to offer something more to the listeners and I want to bring my sound out there.

Do you think this will be a regular release?

I hope so, I’ll definitely do my best to keep Go On Air series coming.

There are so many great tracks on this compilation but if you had to choose, which would be your favourite?

I would choose one of my tracks or something I’m really proud of like the remix I made for Armin van Buuren….but this would be too obvious icon smile GO Has Touched Down So the next one which I really love is ‘Graeme Pollock – Omni’. Not only my remix but also the original is so good.

Why do you think people will really get into this album? What do you believe its strongest points are?

I’m trying to offer something different, something less obvious than what a compilation is used to be, and the personalization of many tracks on it should be the strongest point because any DJ can make the same selection I made but not many can sound like that.

When touring to promote this release, will you be wearing your pilot outfit?  If no, why not?

Hahaha no please!!!  And the funny thing is that you are not the first person who ask for this but I can tell you for sure it’s not gonna happen. We already have someone playing with a very cool mask but you don’t wanna see a “deadcaptain” on the stage, don’t you? lol

Are there any plans for a follow up artist album?

Yes, now that the compilation has finally been released I’m have time to start working on my next artist album. It will take a while since I’ll be busy touring anyway but I will have it done….one day icon smile GO Has Touched Down

What plans do you have lined up for GO on Air over the next 12 months?

I will keep pushing with the music I like the most and will share it through afterhours.fm every third Friday of the month and I will include my favourite tracks in my Live shows with special edits of course.
